Professional Nanny?

I've been a nanny for about 5 years on and off. I'm with my first long term family now. I've been with them for about 6 months now. I LOVE IT!!!!!! I thought my ultimate goal was to be a second grade teacher but now I'm considering not going back to school and being a career nanny? Any advice ? Do any of you guys have degrees? Parents would you be more comfortable with a nanny that has a degree? I know this post is all over but thanks for the tips, comments and suggestions :) I'm 23 by the way and married. If that helps your input any.....

Get your degree. You'll never regret it, especially if you want to ever stop nannying. Without a degree, there's not much else you can do.

get your degree. i started nannying at 18 and never went to college. its now been 13 years. its been difficult to find jobs on the books. so its been hard to build any credit. i cant get a mortgage, etc etc. so if you dont get your degree make Sure you only work on the books. you will need health insurance and maybe your husband provides that i dont know,im just saying.... that but make sure you can provide it for yourself if need be. you never know what the future holds. im not saying nannying isnt a great career bc it can be, you just need to do it the right way or u may end up with no retirement, insurance, credit etc etc.

Definitely get your degree and start work on your masters. I have a college degree in liberal arts but went back and got my masters in Early Childhood Education and am now working as a nanny at close to $30 an hour with guaranteed overtime. I also thought I would teach but found I love being a nanny.

If you're certain you want to be a teacher, then definitely get your degree. You could also consider switching to Early Childhood if you want to be a career nanny, or choosing another field entirely.

If you're just not sure right now, then my advice would be to wait. I'm sure many will disagree. I left college more than halfway through my Elementary Education degree. I had decided that teaching wasn't for me after all. I felt a lot of pressure to finish college and tried exploring other degrees, until I finally admitted it just didn't make sense to me. My passion is birth work, and while nannying is my job for the moment, my goal is to be a midwife. I very much regret enrolling in that college at all. For me, it was wasted time and a LOT of wasted money. Instead of more actively pursuing midwifery, I'm stuck at a nanny job for a while longer because I have to pay my student loans. (I'm choosing the apprentice route to becoming a midwife, which requires me to be "on call" for births, as well as have free time during the weekdays to attend prenatal and postnatal appointments.)

I also whole heartily disagree that you'll be stuck if you decide to leave nannying and don't have a degree. I'm considering leaving my nanny family soon and have many options available to me, while some friends who earned their degree and are jobless or working retail at minimum wage.

Thanks twin nanny. Ive done the same thing and I feel it's a waste of money so I'll wait. That make perfect sense. I have gone to school and stopped as well. Thanks for the advice.

This is one of the most valuable discussions on the blog. For almost 10 years I had it cushy - lived in as a nanny AND they let me keep my part time restaurant job. Spent money, had fun, loved the kid etc. Then - restaurant closed down - started a business - and I will get SS when the time comes - but people I know are getting 2k a month while I will be getting half that because I worked off the books for years, hubby in the same place.

So - we will have to work much longer than we would have if we had THOUGHT and PLANNED when we were young.

Retired nanny said it : start planning for retirement even though you are young

OP.
I guess I should jave mentioned that I am paid on the books. I work through a company. The only thing the company doesn't offer is insurance. Which we get through hubbys job

Get your degree to fall back on but it won't always help as a Nanny. I have aa degree in child development and of course parents want to swap you fast but they just don't want to pay you for it..its a dead end job where a teacher is a more sure thing. Being a Nanny is hard as every few years you are always having to look for new employment
