I did not get health insurance and I got $1,000 less as a bonus this year. HE handles the bonus and money, she the gifts. I really don’t think she knows he screwed me. I don’t think I deserved this. Any supplementary gifts aside from the Bonus:
Length of time you have worked for the Family: 4 months
City, State and Country where you live:  Fairfield, CT
Additional comments:  The family told me not to worry about separating my gas from theirs since I use my own vehicle. They said they will pay for all gas and gave me a carwash a month gift certificate, a tune up gift certificate, an oil change. This wasn’t part of Christmas, but about a week before. The Mrs. told me that she “gets a headache looking at receipts, so just use this for all the gas”. (Special credit card for gas purchases). I didn’t let myself think of a bonus this year since I only started in September with school. I was pleasantly surprised, not by the amount, because I think that is relative to many things, but I work for generous people.

After a week or so, they asked if I was getting adjusted to life outside the city and a said I was and listed some things I missed from the city. story from true nanny files of Elsa said...

I make $800 a week and have been with the family since February. I received a check for $8,000 as my bonus. I was over the moon. I knew I was good. I knew they had money and I knew they appreciated me, but $8,000? I left work and stopped at the bank and automatically deposited at the ATM on Dec. 21. That was my last day of work until January 7. I deposited my 8K bonus check and three $800 checks for that week and the next two over break. I checked my account balance often that weekend. I had never seen it in five digits. I did some extra Christmas shopping. I bought my Mom a piano (on ebay). On Monday, the 24th at about 4PM, my boss calls me. She tells me that her husband had misunderstood her directions and made out the check for $8,000 instead of $800. There was silence on both ends of the phone as I wrestled with this and did the computations in my head. With what I had spent that weekend, I still had enough to return the $8K but I was crushed. She says to me, "Look, this wasn't an easy phone call to make, it's Christmas. The only reason I am calling is so you don't expect it next year. We aren't asking for it back" My instinct to accomodate ran wild and I insisted that I would return the difference. She told me that she would not hear of that and to enjoy my time off.

Who likes owls? Cracked me up.

Some of you have very generous and thoughtful employers.

freespiritedm said...

Wow, story from true nanny files of Elsa, that story is crazy. I wish I had so much money that accidentally writing a check for $8,000 instead of $800 wasn't a big deal. Your nanny family is loaded lol, but DB is clearly not "with it".

freespiritedm said...

Also, for whatever reason, mine wasn't included either. So, here it is;

Bonus this year (2012): $150.00
Your weekly salary: $420.00
Any supplementary gifts aside from the Bonus: Christmas card from family with sweet note
Length of time you have worked for the Family: ~6 months
City, State and Country where you live: Richmond, KY
Additional comments: $150.00 may not sound like much compared to some others (it was delivered more as an Christmas gift than a bonus), but I was happy. I also was paid for two weeks time off, which was wonderful. :-)

Wow...you were very considerate in offering the money back and your MomBoss was awesome for refusing to accept it. Talk about winning the Nanny lottery! I am so jealous...I am turning more and more green as I type this. LOL. Woo-hoo!!

The owl comment was funny. I personally don't know if I like owls or not since I never see them. I do hear them however. That in itself freaks me out. To hear something, but not see something, etc.

Anyway, to the Nanny who got a $1,800 bonus and then was disappointed her three kids didn't receive a X-mas gift this year is just plain selfish. With what you got as a bonus, you most definitely have way more than enough to buy your children Christmas presents. Sheesh.

A box of handkerchiefs and an iron? Seriously?

And to the nanny who was pee'd off about the fact that her employer did not give her presents for her children - sorry, but that's just greedy.

Beth said...

I think that some of the nannies seem greedy. But I am shocked that anyone in America makes in the range of $400 a week. I made that the summer I graduated highschool in 1995.

I work for two families on the UWS. The people I work for are related.

Job #1
Salary $22/hr
Hours: 20-3o per week
Bonus: $1,000.
Gift: Chocolate bouquet from children, hand painted sweatshirt from child, snowboard, snow helmet
lenth of time: 2 years +

Job# 2
Salary: $250
Hours: Thursday 8-6
Bonus: $350
Gift: Framed artwork from child, lift & lodging at Vermont ski lodge for 4 days
length of time: 1 year, 1 month

I hope that those of you making in the $400 range live somewhere in the midwest, because how do you survive on that?

Dear Employer,
"Additional comments: I saw her reflection in the glass cupboard when she opened the envelope. I had given her five one hundred dollar bills. She looked disappointed. I thought the bonus was fair given that she had only worked for us for 1/3 of the year"

Something about your tone sounds very dismissive. I am guessing for the salary you pay, you are not dealing with an American nanny.

freespiritedm said...

Beth, I live in a very small town (Berea, KY), and actually already have a 25 minute commute to my nanny job because there are literally little to no families in my area who employ nannies. Even in Richmond, the city where my employers live, nanny positions are hard to come by. Although I sometimes wish I made more money, especially when I see what these NY nannies make, I am honestly okay with my salary.

From what I have seen, parents in my area generally try their darnedest to pay the nanny a rate comparable to day care. As someone who has been the Assistant Director of a local child care facility, I can tell you that while my nanny family pays me $420/week for three children (fourteen months, five, and twelve), they would only pay about $350/week for the three children in a day care setting. I am paid my weekly rate no matter if they need me or not. However, most child care centers only offer a week or two "flexible vacation time", which means other than those two weeks, parents are made to pay the day care weekly rate as well even if their child doesn't attend. I know I provide a lot more than a day center could/would for the children, but seeing as this is the "going rate" in my area, I feel unable to ask for a raise. :-/ Unfortunately, although I LOVE my family, they also don't reimburse me for gas mileage and never leave spending money for the children and I (I think it's important for both my sanity and the children's that we get out of the house, so I usually end up spending my personal money on trips with the children).

It really sucks because I feel like my nanny family is actually ABOVE average when it comes to pay and fairness. This is just my experience though. I constantly stalk care.com, sittercity, and even Craigslist on occasion for a better position, but have had no luck. I have also yet to find a nanny agency that represents my area, and I imagine most parents here would go the care.com route anyway.

Really? said...

In my area for a nanny to make four hundred a week is a typical rate even very good rate. That's kind of an ignorant comment saying you can't believe anyone in America would work for that. Alot of people work for minimum wage and make a lot less than that but that is the only job they can get. Maybe in New York that is not a livable wage but people make do with it in many parts of America. Your comment made you seem a little spoiled that looks down on hard working America. We are not all so lucky to be paid thousands of dollars a week to be a NY nanny.

freespiritedm said...

@Really?, do you mind me asking where you live? It seems like everyone on this site is a NY nanny or lives in another big area, so it's always hard for me to seek advice. No parent in my area is going to pay their nanny thousands of dollars per week, nor do they give out lavish bonuses and perks. However, I feel like my $420 salary is fairly decent for my area. I live with my boyfriend at this time, and we split pretty much every expense 50/50. I still have a nice amount of spending money left over each week after all my bills are paid, so I could definitely be a lot worse off.

freespiritedm said...

I would definitely be nice if they started recognizing how often I spend time driving their children in my personal vehicle though. Although some of this time is my choice (parents don't force us to go out during the day, but are also completely fine with it) as far as library trips, swimming, and such, there are MANY hours a week that I am driving kids to and from school, cheer leading, and other activities. Never not once have they even mentioned the fact that I spend a lot of my personal money on gas to transport their children. :-/

They're not consistent with it, but they do recognize that I spend my personal money buying the kids lunch and such when we go out. They have made an effort to leave me a small amount of money every now and then, so I feel like this one is a little more acceptable than the gas.

NannyLaLa said...

My submission wasn't included either. Location: ONtario, Canada Weekly salary: 750 gross, Holiday Bonus: 1week's pay (650ish net) Additional gifts: GC to my favourite restaurant, a beautiful framed photo of all 3 kids. I love working for this family, they make me feel very appreciated :)

Really? said...

@Freespiritedm I live in Virginia , not in a big city.....I make 450 working four days a week as a nanny for one child and that is considered pretty high pay for my area. If I ever went on a nanny job interview asking for 20 an hour I would get laughed at and not have a chance, ofcourse the cost of living is much less here. I rent a nice two bedroom loft that includes all utilities and I only pay 700 a month in rent. Where are you located?it is hard sometimes on this blog because I feel like NY nannies are like in another different world than nannies in my area and other parts of the country.

SouthernBelle said...

This survey REALLY brings out the greedy and entitled nannies of the world. 1,500 bonus and bummed because it's 1,000 less than last year? Cry me a freaking river.

freespiritedm said...

@Really? Well, it is VERY nice to finally see someone else here from a small area. I care for three children (twelve, five, and fourteen months), and work Monday - Thursday 6:15 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The oldest is in school everyday, and gets off the bus around 3:30 p.m., but two days a week she has cheerleading, and I don't see her expect for in the morning and when I pick her up at 5:00 p.m. The five year old is in half day kindergarten, and gets home around 11:15 a.m. I am paid $420/week solid, no matter if they don't need me or if I call off for some reason.

NY nannies do live in a totally different world than we do. And although I don't want to be rude, I can't help but agree with SouthernBelle that post like this really bring out the entitled "expectations" of a big city nanny...

MissMannah said...

I live in Oklahoma and most nannies are very lucky if they can get $10 an hour. I made $12 in my last job and I was making far more than in any other job. Our cost of living is very low, hence lower salaries. It is very judgmental for anyone to say "I made that when I was in high school." For one thing, it isn't a salary competition.

justaneastcoastnanny said...

If you are not satisfied with what you are currently making ask for more.

During your next job refuse to take less.

In general I find we women are afraid to speak up and ask for what we deserve. It's conditioning. From the time we our born we are taught to be "nice girls" and go along with whatever comes our way and not make a fuss.

Yes there is a period of time in a nanny's life where she will make less. Early on when she has little experience and is paying her dues.

But if you have years of experience under your belt and you aren't satisfied with your wages perhaps it's time to speak up.

Value yourself. Value the service you provide and put a dollar amount on it.

You don't have to be a nice girl.

I love being a nanny. There was no way I was going to drop the career because I wasn't making enough, so I increased my rates.
Some families don't like it and go elsewhere. I am fine with that. I do not wish to work for everyone.

Sometimes all it takes is 1 or 2 of the well respected highly sought after nannies in the area to say no more for parents to understand that if they want high quality service they need to pay for it.

Nanny in LA said...

My submission was also left out, but I have something to add anyway, so that works out. :)

In Los Angeles...

Job #1: My full time nanny position
Holiday Bonus: $400
Pay: $45,000 per year, salary for one now 18 month old little girl that I love to pieces (app. $645 per week after taxes)
Hours Per Week: 45-50 with 2 weeks of paid vacation minimum and 10 sick days.
Length of Time with Family (A year in mid-April)
I was originally slightly disappointed, only because I know they totally love me and they are brand new to the nanny thing so I kind of get the impression that they were unsure as to the "going" amount for the whole Christmas bonus thing. I think if they had known it may have been higher. BUT I also feel that the way they treat me along with my supplemental gifts throughout the year have made up for my small disappointment.
Supplemental Gifts:
-A pair of really nice yoga pants from the baby since mine are always getting messy on the job for
Christmas
-They paid for slightly over half of my hotel stay (app. $340) when I flew out to meet them and find an apartment last year
-$100 movie gift card for my birthday (they know my bf and I go all the time) as well as an adorable mug with a picture of me and the baby girl.
-$125 gift card to a spa where I was able to get a spa mani/pedi for Valentines Day (totally unexpected!)
-A very good amount of additional paid time off throughout the year when MB and baby have been visiting family or when visiting family has been in-town.

Family #2: Weekly Saturday Night Babysitting Position
Holiday Bonus: $250
Supplemental Gifts: A gorgeous JCrew Cashmere scarf that I love.
Weekly Pay: $20 per hour (one pre-school aged little girl, I love her we have a great time together and they almost always pay me closer to $25)
Hours Per Week: Usually 4-6 hours.
I love this family too and feel extremely lucky.

*I also received a pair of really nice headphones from a third family I babysit for sporadically, which I thought was really nice.*

***I am a very fortunate girl to have moved into a brand new place last year and to have managed to find multiple families that love me, value me and treat me with respect. No amount of money could take value from that. (Of course, money is always nice and a huge help.) I am so grateful for all of my gifts.

Lyn said...

Oops! Looks like mine got lost too!

Bonus paid: $1500.00
Weekly salary: $1200 net for up to 37 hours of care.
Additional gifts: A burberry scarf that MB had monogrammed with my initials in my fave color, a Guess black dress coat with a super ruffly (looks like a pretty dress) lower half, some earrings, and I feel like there was something else but I honestly can't remember what. I hate when that happens!
Length of time with family: 1 year this month.
City and state: Winston Salem, NC :)
