  1. Okay seriously... I can't get past #1 to read any of the rest of them! Your friends can "cum" over!?! and this individual (who I'm just going to assume from the ad is male(?) wants to have a "personal" "Explosive" relationship with the nanny...

I don't think what (s)he's looking for is a nanny... I think what (s)he's looking for a is a prostitute!

  2. I'm not sure why there seems to be so much confusion between the "childcare" section of Craigslist and the "adult services" section.

  3. Also, where do all the people who want to exchange childcare for rent think that their childcare provider is going to get money for food and other bills? I've seen *some* that are workable, with minimal evening hours and a weekend every now and then, but a good number of these want people to work full-time in exchange for a room ("sometimes shared with a five-year-old" also), without even providing food! How is this person supposed to provide food, when s/he works for you daily between 1 PM and 11 PM, more or less preventing them from most other jobs?!

  4. I can't get over the last ad. Who wants to live in a trailer, share a bed with a 5 year old and clean the trailer for $100/week?

  5. Oh yea, I also really hope Tammy in #3 is 14 and NOT 41!!

  6. I can't stand when people act like it's a FAVOR for you to come live in their house and share a room with their child and do their housework and grocery shopping and care for their child 24 hours a day FOR FREE. Or even for a couple hundred dollars a month - which for me wouldn't cover my health and car insurance, gasoline expenses, car payment and grocery expenses.

I feel like saying to these people "My agreeing to work as your nanny and live in your home where I would be at your beckon call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week even on my days off would not be a favor from you to me... it would be a favor from me to YOU!"

The people I used to nanny for actually offered that I come live with them (at the time I was living with my parents) for a small rent (all food and accessories would be provided). Heck no. I politely declined because I #1 didn't pay rent at the time living with my parents, #2 value my privacy way too much, and #3 knew exactly what it would mean - I would be in charge of the children all.the.time.

    No thank you.

Whoever sent that nasty response to Brittany the teenage babysitter needs to get over herself. I think she's presents herself as exactly what she is- 17 years old with minimal experience. So what if she has a stupid email address. If a parent is hiring her thinking they will get the same maturity as a 25-year-old prof. nanny, that's their own stupidity. The only issue I have is with minors giving out their info on Craigslist. Otherwise, leave her alone. We all start somewhere.

If your name is Katherine, how can you be the real Mary Poppins? Isn't the real Mary Poppins' name...Mary?

And agreed that the response to Brittany the baby sitter was uncalled for. Here is a kid trying to make an honest dollar, and she gets harassed. Uncool.

  13. As sad as it makes me to think of all these desperate families trying to make ends meet when they cannot afford responsible child care, I just have to say that if you really think working 12 hour days for 2, 3, or 4 dollars an hour (or in the case of #15, $1.50) is such a fabulous idea, why not quit your existing job and offer to watch other people's children for those hours and that pay?

You would not only be basking in all the "perks" of spending hours and hours with someone else's child, your search for someone who will care for your children will be over, because they will be with YOU.

  14. JustAMommy- I totally agree. I know people are struggling, and I know it's hard even for middle class people to afford high quality child care, but expecting someone to come to your home and provide care for $2 an hour is unreasonable.
Starting one's own child care business is an option, as is relying on friends and family who might be willing to watch your child for this kind of "stipend." You might also be able to find someone who works a different shift to swap child care with. When your finances are limited, more creativity is a requirement.

  15. Maybe I read the one about the 17 year old girl wrong. But does it seriously say $10 per hour PER CHILD???? So if you have 3 kids her rate is $30 an hour? That's crazy! And for some random teen with no experience? I don't know any childcare providers that make that much.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It does say that, but I think she just wrote it wrong and meant $10 an hour for the first child. I assume she wouldn't charge an additional $10 for each subsequent child.

  17. Here's a pay standard parents need to remember, "Can the nanny I want live on this?"

If you want someone part-time, living with the 'rents and having minimal experience, go ahead and offer less. If you want someone full-time, independent and having a wealth of experience, you're going to have to pay more.

Factor in: rent, utilities, phone, internet, car payment and/or maintenance, car insurance, gas, food, health insurance, toiletries, copays, gifts and yes, entertainment.

If you want a nanny that is easy to contact, phone and internet play a part. If you want a nanny who isn't reliant on a bus schedule or can meet impromptu hours, a car and all associated expenses play a part.

If you want a nanny whose entire financial situation isn't a house of cards built on having a reliable roommate, the full cost of rent will play a part. If you want someone near by, it may cost more.

When evaluating what your friends say about their nannies consider: their location and living costs associated, live-in versus live-out, part-time versus full-time, hold old their information is, the collective experience of the nanny or as a lot of people tend to fudge a little on what they pay for some things in life, the parents' own self image as financially wise or frugal individuals.

Also always ask, did your friend pay taxes? Because it is a lot more expensive, and you should. And when comparing nannies to other professions, which I would urge you not to do, remember the source. Are you pulling the pretax numbers from human resources or ascribing more value than should be had to the take home sob story of a truly disgruntled worker?

Also remember what benefits that profession has and what things someone doing that job may not need that your nanny will. A nanny is a member of your family, whether you agree with the sentiment or not. You carry more responsibility than most employers in insuring that your nanny can live on what you pay. It doesn't have to be outrageous, just well thought out.

And when it comes right down to it, it is really simple, "Can the nanny I want live on this?"

That said, if more people did go with this standard, would CL-WTF be as entertaining/sad?

  18. I really hate it when people spell it that way....

    Come over to my house....
    Cum on my....

The two spelled differently mean way different things. and if one spells it that way... I don't know. maybe i am the one with the dirty mind.

    just a pet peeve

  19. Nanny in Seattle- AMEN!!!! Don't think it could ever be better spelled out or correct.
