Great Expectations Store in NYC

Received Wednesday, July 18, 2007
http:isawyournanny.blogspot.com
I saw this nanny enter a store yesterday, (7/17) at around 3:30. The name of the store is Great Expectations on Chambers Street near Broadway. This store is a closeout location, sort of junky and definitely no place for kids, let alone a six month old who is not your own. She was in there for almost a full hour, during which time the baby was fussy and at one time I had to bring to her attention that he was chewing on a price tag of one of the many items she had piled on his stroller and had the whole tag, which had staples on it, in his mouth. She had walked away from him and I had the chance to pry the tag away from him before she came to his side. She handed him a pacifier and went back to what she had been doing. I did photograph her face for fear of a confrontation, and don't believe in photographing people's children without permission, but I do hope that this child's parents see this post. She speaks with a very flat and grammatically incorrect accent, possibly from St. Lucia, or one of the neighboring islands like Dominica, or Grenada.

  1. Girlfriend, you MUST upload the pic! You can do it!

  2. Thank you for posting!

If you cannot attach the photo, can you please post a description of the nanny and the child? What time the incident happened? Anything else that may help the parents identify their nanny? THANKS!

  3. Please can you provide a description of the child and the stroller, thanks.

  4. There is a posting like this on the childcare job board on craigslist.org. I wish someone would tell them about this site instead of taking up valuable space and time!

  5. 2:28:

Why don't you give them the link? What sort of pr rep for this site are you? You're fired.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Post the picture! Don't let those Craigslist e-mailers get you down.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Being unfamiliar with this place, why is not a place where children should be taken?

    ReplyDelete
  8. wheres the pic. I read it on craigslist and everyone complaining but I couldnt find the original post w/ the pic...

    ReplyDelete
  9. so if the child is your own its ok to take him/her there? lol ok that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I did photograph her face for fear of a confrontation,

OP Did you mean to say I did not?

  11. OP here. Stepping aside from the amusement of an error in my post 1:10, let's look at the bigger picture.

I deleted the post with the pic from CL becaused too individuals emailed me directly with threats of bodily harm. I did not do it because I felt intimidated, but because the CL forum is frequented mostly by nannies but I was sure that a few parents might have got to see it. At the time I did not know how to upload the pic on this site. Some of the negative responses were about my description of the nanny but I just wanted to acknowledge that every one is entitled to their opinions inclusive of myself. I did not set out to insult anyone, the truth is that I call things as I see it. I see no reason to be hypocritical and sugar-coat anything. It is what it is people, whether we want to accept it or not.

12:45 LMAO If a parent chooses to take their child into such a location, kudos to them. If a parent pays someone to care for their child under no circumstance should that person think it's okay to take the child into a place like that. I'm not against nannies taking children places or running errands during the day, after all they get no relief until the parents get home, but the choice of venue is quite important

  12. OP:

You shouldn't back down. What are the scum bag defenders of bad care going to do, pop through your e-mail and grab you? They can't. Craigslist is anonymous anyway.

This group needs to know that it can't get away with abusing children. Threats and intimidation should get them no where.

  13. I was the one on craigslist who asked her to define gramatically incorrect accent. I hope that you read my second reponse. I do not disagree that the nanny was in the wrong. However, in both your posts you did come off like you were better than other Lucians. Yes, I too call things the way I see it. And the way I see it is since you had the luxury to shop you were in no way better than the nanny because you were at the same location buying the same cloths.

Again, like I said she(the nanny) was in the wrong and she needs to be dealt with becasue she makes other nannies look bad. It's what you said afterward that got everyone heated.

    ReplyDelete
  14. OP -- I was on your side until I just read your last post. I find it a bit hypocritical. Would it have been ok if the nanny took the child to Bloomingdale's?

The point is that the child was being ignored. He was chewing on a tag and the nanny was not paying attention. There is where the neglect is.

    ReplyDelete
  15. How do you know this was a nanny?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Way to grow some balls, OP. I'm proud of you for posting the pic. Now hopefully the 'rents will spot their nanny and the rest will be history.

I also get what you were saying about this type of store. It's dirty and crowded as can be, just like National Wholesale Liquidators (which, by the way, I love for bargain shopping).

Parents like me take their babies everywhere because we don't catch a break. I never have childcare help when I'm not working. Still, I'd try to avoid a store like that when I'm with my kid.

Nannies, however, can shop on their time off without their charges. If they can't refrain from doing so, they should at least pay attention to the kids while they're there and keep it brief.

An hour is insanity! Of course the child was fussing! What a dumbass this was is for not figuring that out.

  17. JOB most awesomely done OP!
Having never seen the inside of a Great Expectation Store, I get it. I got a rash just looking at the pic!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Is that a red Silver Cross mini stroller?

    ReplyDelete
  19. OP,
You deserve to get your ass kicked. I hope that nanny and her friends beat you to a pulp.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 11:23:

You're just afraid you'll be next.

OP has reinforcements. You're on the wrong turf.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So, here is what we have:

boy around 6 months of age who uses a pacifier

red stroller, black handles, silver frame

black diaper bag with red tag

yellow link with with bright green & orange toy hanging off of it

nanny with a new pair of jeans

    ReplyDelete
  22. OP here, thanks 11:32. The stroller was actually dark blue, the red seen in the pic is actually an inner fold on the diaper bag.

10:34 "He eat awready. ...da cad...is almows five monfs", not exactly the first language of my country.

I applaud you however for hitting the nail on the head. I DO think that I am better off than her, not other Lucians, just her, as I will only speak for this moment, but for reasons other than what you perceived because I would never exercise such poor judgement as what I witnessed on Tuesday.

Regarding your reference to my CL posts, I gave as best a description as I could in the first post. The second one was purposely intended for individuals who were emailing me saying things that were totally unrelated and not fit to be repeated in a public forum. I tried to be as courteous as possible in my response.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have your back OP.
No one should ever feel bad for standing up for a child!
How dare anyone attempt to intimidate someone doing the right thing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 11:23 OP I forgot to mention that I hope neither you, any of your friends, the nanny a.k.a "victim", nor any of her friends were the ones making threats.

If this is the case here I've ignored the first offense, but second time's a charm.

  25. I'm still wondering what kind of store this is that a child should not be taken there. I asked earlier, but no answer. I have a hard deciding what I think about this post as I am unfamiliar with this store and why it would not be approriate for the child.

    ReplyDelete
  26. surely you are not physically threatening someone, are you 1249?
I hope you're surfing from a proxy then.

    This isn't craig's list.
But your response does remind me of about 19 mothers I know who said they would never hire a nanny off of a craigs list...

    such a thuggist type.

  27. ble-
the numerous vats of cargo, container bins of discounted clothing, clutter, creepy patrons, rodents, air quality and heavy exposure to chinese made hangars, clothings, prints and plastics.

  28. 12:52 I am the OP who posted the comment at 12:49

If you read 11:23's comment you will understand. Also read my comment at 12:39. I'm referring to threats made against me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 12:54 OP here. Thanks for the description. It's actually not quite that graphic but ble you get the pic. It is a closeout store most of their items are rejects the dept. store with five letters in it's name, the first one being M

    ReplyDelete
  30. My mistake. I heard they were making threats on Craig's list. Why post there? Seriously thuggish people.

OP you have showed you have the biggest balls on this blog so far!

    Kudos!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Biggest balls, indeed.

I'll tell you what this place needs. We need a HALL OF FAME for those who go above and beyond the call of duty. I'd say the OP is right up there with those who follow people into buildings and get their addresses and shit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. op: Could you see what brand of stroller it was? And can you give a physical description of the child?

    ReplyDelete
  33. OP here I wish it was affordable for families who hire care givers to install monitors and GPS locators in their strollers and diaper bags. I probably would not have received so many negative comments. Reflecting the general reactions to my posts the next time I see something like that I just might follow the sitter/nanny so that I could hopefully inform the parents directly. Lets see how her supporters feel about that? Maybe I should hang out in that area again until I spot her and see how careless she is the next time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. OP, only those just like her would support her. Don't pay them any mind.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sorry the stroller was too laiden with clothing to see much but the baby was Causacian, very light skin color and short blondish/brownish hair. I think the paci that she gave him was blue with a red string, or vice versa, and he was in a onezee, (I think light blue with horizontal pinstripe but not too sure). Hope this helps

    ReplyDelete
  36. that cash register is straight out of 1985!

    ReplyDelete
  37. How come the nanny is wearing a sweater and jeans in the middle of July?

    ReplyDelete
  38. So the baby was UNDER all the crap piled on the stroller??!??
    Holy crap!

And look at the physical property of the place: dirty, yellowed peg board, old tape and whatnot stuck to the counter. EWWWWWW

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thank you 12:54.

I was thinking this posting didn't sound too terrible...other than not realising the kid was munching on a price tag right away, but seeing the pic and new description as well as your description of the store, I have to say this was not a good situation.

Hopefully the parents see this...but then again, they hired this woman. They must have some idea what she is like...especially if her speech is like described (unless that was simply due to an accent...a little hard to tell from the OP).

All in all, not a situation I would tolerate, as a parent.

It was raining in the big apple yesterday, and it wasn't particularly hot either.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Please don't post using all caps or your comment will be deleted.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 2:45,
Don't make me laugh. I hope you get your ass kicked too. Half the dim-witted posters on this site need a good ass-kicking.
And if you did know who I am, which there is no way you could know, I said nothing wrong or threatening. I don't fight. I merely said someone else should kick the OPs ass. I did not say I would do it. That is not threatening. It is a statement.
    11:27,
Afraid I'll be next? I have done nothing to get my ass kicked. I have not and would never post pictures of strangers on the internet.
    OP,
I don't know you from adam. I just think you should get your ass kicked.

    ReplyDelete
  43. 4:01:

I'll tell you what. Let your own (future?) child get abused and then see how you feel about the person who abuses him or her. See if you'd be happy that their ass was caught.

Then again, judging from your post YOU are likely to be the abuser.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think this post is bs.
I don't see a child covered in clothes. I don't see a child. All I see is a woman's back with a stroller. Come on, OP, you could have done better than that.
I would believe it if I saw the poor little thing's arm sticking out even. A leg, a lock of hair, anything. But I see nothing.
This OP is a troll, in my opinion. And this post is fake.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah, 10:06, you'd like the OP to be fake, wouldn't you? Actually no one here cares whether some deluded nincompoop can't see the forest for the trees. You probably think OJ is innocent, don't ya?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ha, ha, ha!

    OJ innocent... Yeah right.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 10:06,
So the stroller is a prop stroller and the woman is somehow involved with or a friend of OP and they simply posed about for sake of a pictoral? You crack me up.

    ReplyDelete
  48. or for that matter, Robert Blake. I'm so sick of the rich, the connected, the famous having a special form of justice for themselves while we peons get the shaft. But back to the matter at hand, this bad nanny sighting. Someone has a really good camera phone.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The nanny is not wearing a thong. I am so sick of the Polish hussy nannies hanging it at my park showing their fishtails. Trying to pick up would be suitors while on the clock. At least this nanny is dressed in a decent and respectful way.-Chicago

    ReplyDelete
  50. It did NOT take place in Chicago 12:27. Can't you read? NYC is the location of this bad nanny sighting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 12:38,
I think 12:27 signed her post "chigaco", I don't think she was saying it took place in chicago, she was only talking about her own experience.
As far as how nannies dress, I couldn't care less. If they take good care of your child, who cares? (within reason, that is.) I think most people who complain about what nannies wear must be fat.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Obviously I was talking about my experience with Chicago nannies. I can read but you have no common sense.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Are you jealous of the hot Polish nannies? Not in thong shape yourself, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  54. ble, her speech is due to an accent, in addition to every other country that was colonized or british owned and on top of that they speak another language and were once slaves who had their own language. Their english wouldn't be particularly cream of the crop. And let us not forget the nanny came from the caribbean, a region of many accents.

As you can see I'm still bothered by the grammatically incorrect accent(OP). I just want you to take in cosideration the history of the language. That's why the nanny speaks like that. She probably speaks patios and english interchangeably. Other Caribbean islands that speak strictly english don't have better grammatically correct accent either. And OP you know I don't have to name them. I know you know already.lol

    ReplyDelete
  55. Are you referring to the Polish nannies in Chicago?

    ReplyDelete
  56. WOW!!! still bothered by the OP's choice of words I thought this blog was about what the nanny did and hoping the parents would find out

    ReplyDelete
  57. 10:55...I wondered what she meant by "Gramtically Incorrect Accent" as well and even after she put an example, I was not sure if it was just an accent. Thanks for clearing it up.

Most people who are somewhat new to this country make some gramtically errors in their speech (as we all likely would learning their language, regardless of our education or status). That sure doesn't make them a lower species.

While, based on other comments and the siting, this maybe was not the ideal place for the baby to be (still not sure entirely as I am in the mid-west) and perhaps she sould have been more attentive, I don't think the nanny's ethnicity should be attacked.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't think OP was attacking the nanny's background or speech, she was simply trying to describe as much as she could so the parents would be able to identify the nanny/child.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hey OP - do you remember if the top part of her hair was braided? I can't really tell from the picture.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  60. OP here. It was brushed up and either in a clip or small scrunchie.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The young polish nannies are notorious for their dress in some area of towns. It is not about being jealous. I think they are au pairs looking for rich husbands. They don discount garb, teeny fabrics that show body and hug skin. Poor choices though. No fashion sense. Nylons with wedge peep toe sandals.
