When: 5/25/15 @ 2:20 PM
Where: Dobbs Park (Croton on Hudson, NY)
Description of Nanny: AA Nanny had a very round, cherubic, sweet face, brown curly hair, hazel eyes, spoke with a little bit of a lilt, dark blue jeans, white tank top, white sweat shirt. Very pleasant looking female.
Description of Child: Girl, brown wirey hair, some freckles. Wearing blue sundress that reminded me of Carmen Miranda.
Incident: They were sitting on the grass by the bleachers. I only noticed them because I heard the nanny ask to taste her ice cream. The little girl said no. The nanny asked about three more times and then she backhanded the entire ice cream cone so it went flying like 10 feet. This little girl started screaming. We all looked at her. The nanny said, "Why did you do that" and the little girl said, "you did it, you're mean" and the nanny said, "You shouldn't have done that, now we are going home". And with that she grabbed the girl by the wrist led her up and led her home. No, it isn't huge but still, she works with children? I would expect a whole lot more!

The child had a tantrum. Nanny had every right to leave. Nanny could had pick child up instead of grabbing wrist. But I think nanny did the right thing.
ReplyDeleteI think you did not read this clearly. The nanny smacked the ice cream out of the child's hand because the child would not let her have a taste. No where do I see it implied that the child threw a tantrum. We must not be reading the same thing. It is absolutely not right for the nanny to act like that. Seems to me that the nanny was the one throwing a little temper tantrum.
DeleteI see where the child was screaming but that was not because she was being a brat throwing a temper tantrum for no reason and needed to be disciplined. No decent nanny would think this type of behavior from a caregiver is acceptable. Get your own ice cream if you want some!
DeleteGood for that little girl! No adult should ever put their mouth on a child's food. More than one in four adults carries herpes simplex 1, and many more than that have cavities. Sharing food/kisses is the No. 1 reason for children's cavities. My children know that they should not share food, period. When they're adults, they can make the decision for themselves. That nanny is gross. Get your own ice cream.
ReplyDeleteWait! Who threw the ice cream, the child or the nanny?
ReplyDeleteIt is huge, actually, because if the woman would act like that in public, God only knows what she does when there are no witnesses.
ReplyDeleteWtf, don't share food?
ReplyDeleteOk yes, some adults have herpes. Plenty do not. And herpes is very rarely caught if not active on your face, wtf? It's not GENITAL HERPES, people. It's a different virus, it behaves differently. It's only related because it's herpes. Jesus.
I share food with pretty much every kid I work with. I've never had parents say anything to me about it, and I find it REALLY STRANGE that someone would be like MY KIDS NEVER SHARE FOOD.
.. They're kids. Kids always want what someone else has. That means they share with other kids, adults, whoever they can get to feed them!
Sometimes I see such strange things posted on this site. It really brings out the weirdos.
to "I believe in good health practices," are you KIDDING??? no one can CATCH cavities. sharing food and kisses is not communicable via sharing food OR kisses. Alice is absolutely right about the herpes. Its a different virus than the genital variety.
ReplyDeleteThis is HORRIBLE. The nanny not only knocked the ice cream off, but then tried to blame it on the child to cover up what she had just done, then roughly dragged her out of the place before she could be verbally 'outed' for what she had done. This is abusive! I really do hope the parents of this child spot this blog post and fire the woman.
ReplyDeleteAlso, on the medical point, it is a known fact that bacteria in saliva causes cavities, so indeed, cavity causing bacteria can be transferred by sharing food such as ice-cream as it is a 'saliva swap. Herpes which causes cold sores etc can also be transferred this way as can be a whole heap of other germs. Whilst my child shares food such a sliced fruit and crackers etc with other people, i will certainly teach her not to share her ice cream with others. I wouldn't share my own ice cream with anyone other than my child or hubby either.
And mono, colds, flues, etc. And vise versa! Kid has an illness, you don't want to catch it too
DeleteAngi
I have herpes. I think I gave it to one of my charges in 2009. I saw a picture of her and she had the outbreak in the same place as I did. I feel terrible. She would always drink my Arizona Ice Teas. I told her no.
ReplyDeleteJulie. You are uneducated on this matter. Cavities ARE contagious: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/29/health/29really.html?_r=0. Most infants and children pick up cavity bacteria from their caregivers, whether parents or nannies. Your ignorance is showing.
ReplyDeleteAlice, never sharing food means not sharing things that have gone from one mouth to someone else's. How am I a weirdo for keeping my children healthy? Also, genital herpes is very similar to oral herpes, just in a different location. One can actually pass genital herpes to the oral region, and vice versa. I advise you take a health class.
ReplyDeleteMy now ex best friend fed both of her nephews until they were 4-5 years old. When they started table food, both her and her sister would eat of the fork, chew the food, put it back on the same fork, and feed them. I thought it was ridiculous, as they were old enough to feed themselves; who cares if there was a mess? It's how they learn. Truth be told, I believe they did this out of laziness-we feed kids, no mess. Kids feed themselves, I have to clean up a mess.
ReplyDeleteI NEVER share food with kids or others. If they would like to try some, they are more than welcome and it goes in a separate container. There's a reason why restaurants issue two forks.
I wonder what this nanny is like behind closed doors?
I'm utterly baffled by this post. Of course it's a huge deal. Who whacks somebody's ice cream out of their hand for not sharing? Who backhands somebody's ice cream? Who treats a child like this? Fire that nanny asap.
