Chick-Fil-A in Reston, VA

Received Thursday, Janury 28, 2009
nanny sighting logo I was in the Chick Fil A in Reston, Va. There was a young lady there with 2 blonde haired girls. They were in the play room and she was on a phone outside the room with her back to them. I kept staring at her She was Hispanic looking with a brown jacket and a gold bag over sized There was no interaction with the children until a group of other kids came then she went in sat on the floor still on the phone.

We left I am a nanny who never talks on the phone when in public you are paid to watch the children not ignore them. I would have fired her on the spot!

  1. Is it possible that she was on the phone with someone important? Perhaps, the mom? Did she stay on the phone the entire time? Or was it for 30 minutes and then she played with the kids?

  2. First of all it's Chick-fil-a and there are times I allow my charge to play in the play room while I am outside on my phone.....most parents do the same thing. Children don't need an adult playmate 24/7 they are allowed to play on their own on occasion.

  5. Haha OP only yaps on the phone in private when no one is around to report her.

You know how many times my charges' mother calls or texts me while I'm out with them? More than my friends, family and even boyfriend do...This sighting doesn't sound worthy of possibly causing someone to lose their job.

I feel like this nanny thinks she deserves a medal or something...talking on the phone and then playing with the kids is not bad nanny behavior...stop wasting our time and maybe get a hobby...possibly working out at the gym.

  8. If you weren't there don't question my sighting

So we are just supposed to take your word for it simply because we weren't there? We aren't allowed to question your sighting when you weren't clear enough and some of us don't see the problem with allowing a child to *gasp* play on their own?

  9. Some OPs are just trying to create drama. Sometimes my charges prefer my watching them, when they play by themselves. And, yea, I talk on the phone with their mom all the time. I just tell the kids "I need to take this call" and they are OK with that, even excited (it looks like the cell phone is a fascinating gadget to them.)

  12. I don't give a rat's ass what my five and seven year old want, I pay my nanny to watch my children, not sit around gabbing on her cell phone. And this is something we specifically discussed when hiring you.

I am not impressed with all of you nanny types rallying to support yet another negligent nanny.

You weren't there. The OP was there. Where are your charges now?

All of these nannies on this board of late. Makes my skin crawl.

  13. Jojo is always so cranky. Take a deep breath or something. This is an online blog. There's no reason for such a venomous reaction.
This is ONE sighting among dozens that we "nanny types" are "rallying" together on. Why? Because it was a ridiculous sighting...not because we're planning a coup. Most of the time, 90% of the posters commenting on bad sightings agree with the OP...nannies and parents alike.

P.S. My charge is in school :-)

  14. I have taken calls while working. I have taken calls while out with my children. The difference between the nanny above and I is that I would never ignore my charges. I keep my phone calls brief. I am in tune with my charges. And everyone in an establishment would know I am not just with my charges but watching them like a hawk, which is unfortunate for the charges of the nanny feautured in this post and all of you lackluster nannies.

  17. I worked for a family once who specifically told me in the beginning not to hover over their children. Yes, watch them and keep them safe, but let them be kids and learn to entertain themselves as well.

We always had different activities or games that we played during the day but if I took them to the park or out to play, I wouldn't be all up behind them like they were unable to have fun on their own.

Just like when kids are at school or preschool and go outside for recess. You see one or two adults monitoring them, but otherwise they are all playing together, like kids should be doing.

Now, having your back turned to the kids or your eyes not on them at all times is totally unacceptable, but come on, let kids be kids! I am not paid to be a child entertainer, I am paid to take care of them.

  18. I wander if you who stood up for her rationalize you being on the phone when i have conversations with the parent i make it short and always tell them i need to go back to work we have a good chuckle for the day
She was using the playground as a babysitter.

  19. As my child is older, I do talk on the phone occasionally if she is playing with other kids, or just wants to play alone, without me. However, I never take my eyes off her, and I do not turn my back on her. The nanny in this situation should have been watching the children while she was on the phone. However, I do agree with other posters. If the children are older, there is no reason you must be at their side constantly.
