Please beware of a Nanny who after being at my house 8 times, passed out completely when I left for 45 minutes. When I came back home my child was naked, the window was open and she was out cold, and I could not awaken her for some time. She staggered out of my house and down the hill and I never heard from her again.
I just found out she has done it before — she drank their alcohol, and also passed out at their house. Both of the children she watched were under 2 years old.
She is an American Caucasian student, younger than 30, with curly brown hair and a little bit overweight. She looks sweet and innocent and has a college degree, was an au pair in Europe, and she is someone you would think would be great with your children because she has a lengthy nanny resume. She has impeccable references, is fluent in several languages and has worked at several of The City’s private schools. She is training to be a teacher and is volunteering at public schools in The City. Her initials are B.D.
It is only a matter of time before she hurts someone or herself.
I seriously would have knocked her out even colder, not woken her up.
ReplyDeleteDid your child pull her diapers off herself, or are you insinuating something worse happened, God forbid?
What, you hired a fat nanny? I wouldn't do that.
ReplyDeleteJUST KIDDING!!!! REALLY!!!! (Just thought today was a bit dull on here with not enough issues to bicker about...NOT!)
Wow. Thankfully nothing bad happened to your child.
ReplyDeleteOMG! I get so upset when I hear something like this! I saw a woman once, nanny or Mom, I'm not sure, but she brought her daughter into a package store, no coat (it had to be around 20 degrees) pacifier and the child was around 5, then she got into a car with a smoker in the front seat and held the child in her arms!
ReplyDeleteI was so pissed!
YIKES!!! who would drink on the job? gosh, some people are so incredibly irresponsible it scares me!
ReplyDeletei hope she never gets hired again.
Holy crap! I won't even take pain meds when I'm at work, save for OTC Tylenol that I know how it will affect me. Once before a dental appt. I told the family I had to leave early b/c I was given some relaxants to take an hour before the appt. and I refused to take them during work hours since I'd never taken them before and didn't know how I'd react. They understood came home early that day.
ReplyDeleteHow the heck did you find this "nanny"? Had you checked her references?
Its Blog Walking :)
ReplyDeleteWhy can't you post the name? What references did you check? It is critical that you let the references know what happened so they do not refer her in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi all,
ReplyDeleteI am the poster.
I checked her references and they were stellar ,I stayed with her 2 days before I left her alone with the children,. I have since spoken again to her references and its a good thing because of course, she called them yesterday asking if they could be called as references again! They are horrified, and will not vouch for her (thank God).
She really seemed a lovely person, and I am sure she is, but she is an alcoholic, and needs to be stopped before she hurts someone badly. I have spoken to the other mother, and we don't want to be sued (she did admit her drinking to her when confronted), but we also want people to know that she will put your child in danger.
San Francisco is so small, it was only a matter of time before we met each other. If she does this again, I think we would find out about it (but please, without references, hopefully we won't have a repeat of this).
Why was my kid without clothes? I can only think that she had just come from the park, and was about to give him a bath (which, would have been fatal in her condition). I try not to think about what could have happened, but I still feel awful that i put my child in such danger.
I don't know what more I could have done, but i feel awful anyway.

Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteShe probably was, before the alcoholism, a great nanny (hence the references). Don't beat yourself up for hiring her. I have dealt with addiction in my family and know that an alcoholics are great at coming up with ways to hide or disguise their disease.
You're doing a good job by getting the word out to warn other families.
And to those suggesting that the OP post the nanny's name:
I don't really think there is any need to post it. The initials and description are enough to identify her to anyone who make think of hiring her. Posting her name could bring legal trouble (an expensive and lengthy ordeal, regardless of which side you're on).
What a horrible situation. The only thing I'm confused about is, you said she had stellar references, yet found another mother who had employed her with the same results as you had. Was she one of the references? If not, how did you find her? San Francisco is not exactly a small country town. Just curious!
ReplyDeleteHope nobody gets this bad nanny again.
Wow. And I felt guilty when I took a few of the family's extra-strength Tylenol while working. I had a splitting headache.
ReplyDeleteMany alcoholics are extremely good at hiding their addiction. Also, you said she's under 30. Sadly, I've known a few people who start showing the signs of alcoholism around their mid-20s. She probably was a stellar nanny before her drinking got out of hand.
OP, don't beat yourself up about this. You did everything correctly.
OP..
ReplyDeleteDon't beat yourself up. You could not have known since she had good references. You did everything right by calling her references and trying to get word out to others not to hire this person. Like others said, she was probably a good nanny until her drinking got out of control. If you choose to hire another nannny set up a nanny camera until you get comfortable and are able to trust again. The sad thing is that we try to protect our children the best we can, but can't protect them from everything. Just the way the world works and its very hard. And I'm not even a parent yet, but a nanny who loves her family she takes care of more than anything.
I can't comprehend drinking. I have about as much interest in consuming alcohol as I do in consuming Windex.
ReplyDeleteThis is inexcusable and the danger of what she did, and what she is, cannot be over emphasized. You should report her to California's CPS: http://www.cdss.ca.gov/cdssweb/PG93.htm or: 1-800-856-5553
It is in her best interest and in the best interest of any child who would meet her.
