Small Playground at Kowsky Plaza in NYC

Received Friday, February 15, 2008
Hi. I just wanted to let the parents of "Katie" who is blonde and was wearing navy tights and a corduroy pinover that her nanny was mistreating her today, (2/15) while within the grounds of Kowsky Plaza. The nanny was an older woman, possibly Polish (guessing at her accent), with brown and gray hair worn in a bun. She was dressed in slacks, a ski vest and a tan turtleneck. This nanny was very shrill with the child and at one time grabbed her arm very hard with her whole hand wrapped around it twice and scolded her. She had grabbed the child so hard that when she let go the whole child's body fell away. I heard the child called Katie and I was hoping to note someone who knew this child or her parents. Katie was wearing children's dress shoes, blue with a buckle. I don't know why "Katie" was disciplined. She spent most of her time playing alone, but at one point had approached a female child who was about 4 and attempted to befriend her. From my observation point, it appeared that is why the nanny got up and stormed over to her. (??) Honestly, it is hard to know what was going on there, but the grabbing of the child was very harsh.

  1. Am I understanding that you are saying the nanny's hand wrapped around the girl's arm twice? "This nanny was very shrill with the child and at one time grabbed her arm very hard with her whole hand wrapped around it twice and scolded her." Sounds like the truth is being stretched a bit ...like the nannies hand! What else are we stretching here?

  2. Or she did it twice. Der. Dumb nanny looking to cause trouble. Oh no, a nanny never grabbed a child. No sir. It couldn't be.

  3. 5:12........get real. She probably meant she grabbed Katie twice. Stick to the post......NO child should be grabbed in a manner such as described. I hope poor little Katie's parents see this.....and fire that nanny!

  4. I am sorry that is not very clear. I spell checked automatically. The little girl was wearing a pinafore, not a pinover. And what occured was this. The little girl was playing by herself. Another little girl about a year older began playing near her and she began to interact very nicely with that child. The nanny got up, stormed over to her and grabbed her arm and said something. She waited for an answer. The girl did not respond, so the nanny grabbed her arm again and repeated whatever she said. I would swear the child was only supposed to play with herself. It was an odd snippet. Maybe they were foreigners, now that I think about it. Katie could have been related to the old gal.

  5. LOL I too, took the post to read that the nannies hand wrapped around the girl's arm twice. I immediately thought of that super hero that stretches in Fantastic 4! And yes, I also thought it was exxagerated because of it. And I read it three times to make sure I was reading it right! Oh what a difference a comma makes sometimes eh?

Anyway, I can't stand shrill nannies. I wonder if this is yet another one of those 285.00 per week Au Pairs that are so popular. Whenever I am out and about with my charges, it's almost always those Au Pairs that are the lazy, park bench nannies. Not saying they are all bad, but just what my personal expereince is. From Spring to late Fall I could probably post on this site at least once a day with what I see!

BTW this is SuperNannyNNJ, I just can't put my Nickname up anymore it seems.

  6. I had my daughter at a park once and a little girl of Middle Eastern descent came over to play. After a few moments, a woman who may or may not have been the mother grabbed the little girl away and spoke harshly to her in, I presume, was their language. After a few more minutes my daughter went to play with the little girl who was now in another area and came back to me very sad. I asked my daughter what was wrong and she said the little girl was not allowed to play with "Americans"

  8. 5:51-wow! That is sad. Just when you think those times have passed....
SuperNannyNNJ-just click on the bubble to the left of Name/URL and then the line will pop up for you to fill out a name.

  9. Eveyone is having problems leaving their name now. It's different, and I think confusing to some. Maybe the name/url part could just say "moniker", then everyone would know to hit that button.
How about it, Jane? Could we try that?

  10. 3:44 AM,
I don't have that sort of control. It's all up to blogger. Sorry.

  11. I never noticed the:

*Please click Name/Url to use your MONIKER. You do not need to fill in the Url blank, only the "name".

I know it took me a minute to figure it out, lol. So if that's new, thanks JD!

  12. 5:51, that is SAD and SICK. If they don't want to interact with "Americans", DON"T FU*KING COME TO AMERICA!!!! Who wants to bet they were collecting welfare, Medicaid, AFDC and WIC? Don't get me started on this one.

  13. I hope someone sees this an notifies and parents.

  14. Cali Mom, I usually like your view points, but to say: "Who wants to bet they were collecting welfare, Medicaid, AFDC and WIC? Don't get me started on this one..." is honestly stooping to the same level as saying: "don't play or speak with someone else because they are a different race/nationality from yourself." In other words, both are hate filled statements and full of stereotypes, as obviously they were stereotyping Americans to not want their child to play with one; and what, pick up bad habits? Rather than filling hatred back towards the person, and assuming such an ignorant blind ethnocentric ideal, why don't you just feel sorry for the poor child who is being raised to hate another human being just because they are different from herself? Also, please don't fall into the myth that the majority of immigrants are zapping our system and/or taking our jobs, because it just isn't the cases (do some UNBIASED research on this) the grand majority of immigrants are hard working and simply trying to do what we are ALL trying to do, make a better lives for ourselves and our children.

We were all once immigrants to America (unless of course you are Native American), and we all once adapted, and became what it now is to BE American. We are all human, we all live, breathe, and need the same basic necessities to thrive. Instead of feeling hatred back towards people like this, teach your child differently, there is enough prejudice and hatred in the world already-on all sides. Let's not forget that America is a cultural melting pot, and that we DO welcome all of our "children" no matter where they originally came from.

  15. Sorry for the typos... "fill" = "feel", "lives" = "Life" etc...should have spell checked but the oven buzzer just went off, so please forgive me (this time haha) and take it as it is...the point still remains the same! :)

  16. Why do you think this little girl isn't allowed to play with Americans? Could it be that she might be exposed to something that might conflict with some very un-American practices that go on in her home that shouldn't be going on in this country? No matter what their religion, people who come here need to know that we have civil rights and freedom in this country. That is the basis upon which this Republic was founded, and those who do not believe in human rights as we believe in them in this country, should LEAVE immediately-- or better yet, just don't come here.

  17. Re: sprak

Please, let's be honest here, there are TONS of different religions and belief systems in the United States, and Government is to be kept separate from Religion, so it is not okay to push our own personal belief system and values onto others as the group norm., regardless of whether you feel yours is the right choice. How would you feel if you moved to another Country (for whatever reason) and were forced to change religions, your values or your morals, and that which you had been taught was right since the time of birth? Also, you stated that people should have Civil LIberties here, meaning that we ALL have freedom, and it's not civil liberties if only one school of thought is allowed to prevail and exist. You can not police other peoples children (as much as sometimes you may like) they have the choice to not let their child play with yours, just as much as you have the choice to not let your child play with a kid "from the wrong side of the tracks". I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying its true, that is what freedom is.

**On a side note, it is never okay to abuse a child, and I am not standing up for pulling that sweet little girls arm. I am solely regarding the issue of civil liberties, core beliefs, morals and values in America.

  18. Apple, if the customary norms and accepted beliefs, and prevailing religion of a country is abhorrent to you, the solution is simple. Don't move there.

By your logic, it's fine and dandy for some white South Africans to move to NYC and let their child socialize ONLY with other white kids, because, well, that's what they find acceptable, that's what they are comfortable with, and they are repulsed by the local custom of people of different races socializing freely together. (No offesne intended to any non-racist white south Africans, it just seems like a logical example.)

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and if you hate Rome and all Romans, do them the favor of keeping yourself out of their country.

Yeah yeah, we are all "immigrants", our parents came here from other countries, yadda yadda. Problem with that argument is, there were NO controls or limitations on immigration before a certain year so no matter who came here and from where, they were not breaking the law. Not only that, they did not expect to enter a foreign country and have all the citizens of that country bend over backwards to accomodate their cultural preferences. You know, the customs of the country they CHOSE to LEAVE behind.

I have absolutely nothing against people coming here LEGALLY, paying into the system to suport themselves and everyone else, as all taxpayers do, and finding jobs and working hard. So far so good. But don't come here and reap the benefits wherever you can find them, yet act like it's all beneath you and it repulses you to be on American soil. You're the foreigner. Assimilate. End of story.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, and I don't care where people come from. This appiles to all who come here.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, I don't think you get it at all, much less the apple, Apple. Freedom and civil liberties are the rights of all who live here (legally). Many of the people coming here now have very different beliefs regarding their children, especially female offspring, and as such, these girls are denied civil liberties, to say the least, and their parents insist upon forcing rigid, outlandish and often, inhumane restraints upon them. This is where our government does step in and should step in to protect innocents from these zealots. If they don't wish to abide by our laws and don't approve of our way of life, including the freedoms that it provides, then I don't want them in our country, regardless of whether they pay taxes or not, have jobs or live off welfare. We don't need them here.

    ReplyDelete
  21. sounds like a rotten granny to me. blech!

  22. If they don't wish to abide by our laws and don't approve of our way of life, including the freedoms that it provides, then I don't want them in our country, regardless of whether they pay taxes or not

This bears repeating. Very well said Sprak.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You know, our government was formed with the idea of Freedom OF Religion...not freedom FROM Religion. The prevailing belief system at the time our country was formed (and which is irrefutably reflected in the documentation from the time, as well as abubdantly present in the architecture of our government buildings)was that the God of Abraham (as in Christian/Jewish type religions)was to be revered, obeyed and prayed to in matters regarding our country.

Somewhere we have gotten way off track. Freedom of religion was mean to allow people to worship as they wish without fear of persecution...not to prevent people from being able to mention the name of God in any way, shape or for at school or in any matters dealing wiht our government.

Yes, if I went to Iraq, I would fully expect to be persecuted for my non muslim religious beliefs. If I went to Afghanistan, I would expect that my blonde hair being exposed would cause me trouble. If you come ot America and are not jewish or Christian (or a few other "mainstream" things), you have every right to practice your religion wihtout being bothered. (You're welcome.) But don't try to change what we are, or complain that you have to hear our prayer or beliefs spoken in public.

If you come here and are legal, and earn your own living without "taking advantage of the system"...go ahead and enjoy all of the freedoms and rights that are yours for the taking (you're welcome.)

But they're right above. Don't come here (illegally or not) with both hands open, taking all you can grab, contributing nothing in return, and then have the gall to criticize America or the Americans who are paying the way for you to sit on your butt and bitch.

  25. Religious zealots from Poland? I don't think so. Many employees of international corps. or governments are posted here for a couple of years. Maybe they don't want their children exposed to our shallow materialistic values and vulgar pop culture!

    yes, please?

  33. 10:03 is 2XA. Time to stop responding and starrt ignoring.

  34. Sigh. Quick remedial reading course:

The comment that started the current discussion on immigrants integrating vs. staying aloof for reasons only they see fit was about a woman and child of middle eastern ethnicity, and how the middle eastern child was not allowed to play with Americans.

I'm sure Sprak has in mind genital mutilation, forced marriage and honor killings when she talks about the civil liberties of some female offspring of some immigrants being violated. If you don't think this happens, look it up. And regarding Mom's post about religion in this country, I wanted to add, these are NOT protected "freedoms of religion" that people can claim when they come here from another country. I think that was Sprak's point.

And obviously, Sprak was referring to the 4 year old middle eastern girl as not being able to teach anyone "shallow materialistic values and vulgar pop culture".

As for those people who may be forced to live here due to working for an int'l corporation, the same applies. If they are CHOOSING to live here for ANY reason, they should either accept the opportunity graciously, or decline and save the space for others.

Are people really so confused by reading a thread?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Apologies. It seems only 10:03 was confused. I knew most of you were smarter than that!

  36. Again, 10:03 is 2XA. Don't bother.

  43. Why is it that the lurkers are more critical about regulars here who post with their monikers than anonymous posters? Is it because they are among the anonymous posters and too afraid to own up to their comments?

  44. By george I think you got it, Sprak. But for this, I will remain "Anonymous", lol. I am not getting into this one.
    Love you guys!
