Southwest airline flight from San Fran, CA to Washington Dulles

Received Tuesday, February 13, 2007
I would have posted this sooner had I known about this website.
Date: 10/26/06
Place: Southwest airline flight from San Fran, CA to Washington Dulles

You sat in front of me for a little while with your sweet little girl, asian decent, about 2 or 3,. We spoke briefly about my being a nanny, then switched seats with your nanny and took care of your infant son a few rows ahead. The entire trip your daughter kept asking nanny to play or sing, nanny responded by saying, "shh, go to sleep". Constantly eating and didnt interact with girl at all. As a nanny I was disgusted by this behavior. Understandbly, it was a long flight, but play with the kid, dont just tell her to go to sleep.

  1. wait, where was the mom?

  2. Mom started the flight sitting in front of me, then switched seats with nanny, so she was about 6 or 7 rows ahead and nanny was in front of me the rest of the flight.

  3. maybe little girl was supposed to be napping during the flight?

  4. And the reason you didn't say something to the mom as you witnessed this???

  5. should have given her some benedryl!

  6. Benedryl? She should have tried to entertain the child. That actually is both parent and nany flight. I've flown to England from Los Angeles and entertained the kids every waking moment. The child should have had toys, a dvd player to watch, and activity books. Don't be a bad nanny apologist. And thanks to the original poster. If we don't police our own, we'll have obnoxious people telling us our business.

  7. Was the Nanny Fat? Because trusting a person with an eating problem to make a child a priority when she has access to copious foods- that could go either way. I am not saying the nanny is a bad person but if she is a food addict, maybe she just wanted the child to get to sleep so she could get her nosh on. To envision this scenario, replace the salty nuts with a crackpipe.

  8. 547, that's mean. but lmao.
Because I do wonder what was she eating? It's not like they even serve food on most airplanes!

  9. OP, now I am curious. What was she eating?

  10. 5:47 are you serious...maybe you should get off your ass and the computer and get a life! That is the most low-life comment I have ever heard!

  11. i really need to know what she was eating. i mean what are the choices? A bag lunch with an apple and white bread sandwich, peanuts, pretzels..... what???

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow, 547, you sure do get around with your issues about food. I'm sure you're the one who posted about the hot cocoa packets in the post about the Joyce Leslie store sighting. Are you sick? With an eating disorder? Either you're totally anorexic and hate people who enjoy their food, or you're totally fat yourself and point your finger at others. The nanny did a bad job, but don't assume she is fat. Some people are nervous flyers, and she may have been eating because of nerves. Whatever your problem is, sister, just step away from your computer and go for a jog.

  13. Maybe the nanny was hungry and the child really needed to go to sleep.
    Duh...

  14. I wonder if this person has ever been on a Southwest flight. I had to fly east for an emergency visit and Southwest was my only option that was without connectors. A four hour flight got me two drink services, and assorted ritz crackers, some nasty cookie thing, and something else equally unedible. Luckily I had the forethought to grab a salad from the CPK in the airport.

  15. perhaps what 547 said was a bit harsh. if you think about it, the actual flight may have been the only time the nanny had to herself. to eat. or to relax. i am echoing the sentiment of op.me- i dont understand how what she ate is relevant to the post, unless she out of control. We schedule our meetings during lunch and are eating while we are working everyday. No one is less productive with a sadwich in their hand.

  16. Maybe it was the little girls naptime?? I'm a nanny for a 2 yr old girl, and naptime is naptime whether she likes it or not. It's called sticking to a schedule and not letting the child be the one in control... seriously, whoever posted this is not that bright.

  17. The mother should be taking care of her child- not dumping it off on someone else because she can't care for a toddler and an infant alone. Have one kid or better yet- none if you can't provide care for your own children.

I guess she wanted to take care of her "infant son" who would eat, sleep, and stay still the whole way and dumped the toddler off on the nanny.

  18. And? So freaking what.
That mom not wanting to have to handle both children created a job for someone who might have otherwise been shucking corn or deepfrying burgers.

Absolutely insane when I see people attacking the employer for mereley having a nanny.

    People have nannies create jobs.

  19. Oh so people hire po' people to be nannies that could only flip burgers? That is so noble of 'dem rich folk!

Hire a nanny for when you are AT WORK. If you are there, take care of your own kids. What an idea???

  20. do you honestly think that a nanny who needs a job is going to want to work less hours? A lot of nannies regard themselves as- oh my- professionals. They come in and they do a job. Sometimes for stay at home Mothers. Sometimes for work out of the home mothers. SOmetimes they are asked to come in while the working mother is on vacation. If you are getting paid, why would you bitch about it? you wouldn't. You would be grateful that you had a job.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Grateful for a job- not be taken advantage of. So "mommie" sat a few rows ahead and took care of her infant while the nanny couldn't even eat her meal in peace. I bet she quit as soon as she got off that plane!

  22. please. to some of these nannies. a ride on a southwest airlines flight is a luxury they have never before had and will never again have. the nanny was should have been able to do both. and the mother had the tougher job if you ask me! A toddler you can play with. A baby who starts crying because of his ears or just because. What can you do on the plane?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just love the comments about how much the po' nannies should appreciate everything thrown their way because they are poor. Wow a flight on an airplane- by all means take all of the rich "mommie" crap because you are too poor to have feelings or an opinion.

Depending on the age of the infant- it may have slept most of the flight. If you have a 6 or 8 week old- eat, crap, & lots of sleep. A toddler needs constant interaction and they do not want to sit still for a long flight.

  24. listen psycho,
    you are missing the point.
tne mom and nanny both board a plane. they divide the kids. that makes sense to me. i know some parents that fly up front in first class with the nanny in coach with three kids.
I think the point is a child begging for a nanny to play with her is almost as annoying and sad as an infant crying on the plane and being ignored.
    Don't blame the parent.
    Blame the nanny.
And just so you know who I am, I am the mother of twin boys age 17 months. I can play with a puzzle with one and draw with the other all the while eating barbecue potato chips and guzzling diet coke.

  25. Who will know what the actual situation on this flight was except the mom & nanny who don't seem to be reading this post.

I'm a nanny and when I read this post the main thing I thought about is, "God! You'd never get me on a flight taking care of a toddler." Or, possibly you could, but you'd be paying through the nose.

Then again, say the parents I worked for asked me to fly on a trip with them (something they don't do b/c they like to be with their 3 kids w/o a caregiver on their vacations, something I respect a great deal) and agreed to pay whatever I named as my per diem then I would perform my job well because I was being paid what I felt I was worth for it.

Then again, none of that has anything to do with the OP. So, I say again, who knows what was going on in that situation?

  26. I think they are more like TEAMSTERS!

  27. Why does this child have to have constant attention? What is wrong with the nanny taking a moment to eat her food? Children need some quiet time too. There are too many people letting kids make all the decisions and that is why most kids are out of control these days. I am a mother and a nanny and I say there is nothing wrong with telling a child it is nap time or quiet time! Unless the child is being abused, mind your business. We all have different opinions on how to raise our kids and that doesn't make others wrong, just different. You go on and over indulge your kids if you want, I will keep my comments to myself.

  28. as a non parent who thinks that children under 10 should not be allowed on air travel, I think it is very obnoxious of the person in charge of the child (whether a nanny or parent) to ignore the child on an airplane. Teach your child a lesson on your own time. Not mine.

  29. While I don't blame the mother for having help on the flight with 2 small children, she should have been taking care of the toddler. If it was a long flight and the toddler wanted to talk or play with someone it should have been the mother. The nanny could have been taking care of the infant so the mother could spend some time with the older child.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The mom may have had to go with the infant due to breastfeeding, therefore, making it impossible to sit with the toddler. Either way, I agree that there's nothing wrong with making a child have some down time. Especially on a crowded plane with no other means of escape.

  31. As a former nanny (now a SAHM)... I have realized there are 3 types of people who have nannies:

    1. People who had kids for status and can care less. They let thier nanny do everything from homework to housework. Heck, they hired a "wifey."

    2. People whose kids have been kicked out of regular daycare/school because of severe behavioral or mental issues. (Not always bad, but please allow your nanny to know your child is midly autistic and can be agressive -biting, kicking, hitting, spitting - before she starts, duh!)

    3. Those who work and need a nanny for the 9-5. But when they are present, they are parents!

Personally, I have worked for all 3 types... and whom have I stayed with the longest... family type #3 that's who. They value a nanny and don't take advantage of me.

For every bad nanny there is an equally bad employee. :)

As for the nap thing... kids need a structured schedule no matter where they are... maybe it was just naptime!

As for the eating... maybe the nanny has low blood sugar. :)
