Thursday

Faneuil Branch of the Boston Public Library

Received Thursday, February 1, 2007
I was at the library this morning 1/31 at 10:45 when I overheard a nanny and child interacting. The nanny was reading magazines. The child was next to her. He had his own book but what happened that troubled me was the child asked her three times for a piece of gum. Three times she either held her hand up or said in a minute. This didn't concern me. What did concern me was the next bit of talking I heard. When the nanny took her pocketbook up from between him, she said "you spilled all my pills out". She wasn't mean about it, just matter of factly. For all I know they were antibiotics, but if you have pills in your pocketbook, perhaps you should make sure the child you take care of does not go in your pocketbook. Since she was ignoring the child anyway, she is lucky he didn't pop & drop a handful. Common sense. Nanny and child were both white. Nanny had dark brown hair, acne scarring and dark rinse jeans with bleached knees. (circa 2001). Child's hair was too long for a boy, shaped like a mushroom. Wearing red & blue coat with 2 vertical stripes across the chest.

  1. before some ninny comments on this post about a parent with pills in her handbag, let me just say- Pete Doherty would not make a good nanny, but if he hires someone to do a specific job with regard to care of his kids- this would still be totally unacceptable.

  2. "hair too long for a boy" . . . glad the hair length police have finally arrived on this site!!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Wow...who are you to say what is too long for a boys haircut, or that the nanny was dressed circa 2001! I didn't know we had the fashion police on this website!

  4. Child's hair was too long for a boy

What does this mean? My young charge has shoulder length hair- let's kick him out of the boy club!

  5. um, i think it means he needs a haircut.
we all have opinions. you are kidding yourself if you are a mom with a boy with one of those long haircuts and you don't understand that everyone is thinking "cut his hair already".
can you imagine the truths you would hear if you opened your ears to the truth?

  6. This site has become a breeding ground for cattiness and pettiness. It's a shame too - the idea behind it was a good one.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hopefully the mom will see this, get the boy's hair cut to a length the poster approves, and fire the nanny for not wearing the latest trend in jeans.

I don't know about a breeding ground for cattiness. This is a sight that relies on other people's individual impressions and observations. I have never sent in a sighting, but if I did- I would describe what I saw to the readers the same way I would describe it to my best friend.

The things people come up to bitch about are insane. So the kid has a lot of hair. At least it isn't something heinous.

I saw a kid yesterday with a giant mole on his lip and a pug nose. The kid has to ride that out for about ten more years before he can get that surgically fixed. That's tragic.

  9. ^^Umm, no, not everyone is thinking, get the kid a haircut when they see a boy with long hair. that is just your opinion. I too can't believe the cattiness around here, really bringing the site down.

  10. this post is really stupid.

  11. To all the fools who chose to take offense at the OP's description of the parties involved rather than the very real issue here. Everyone who has, in their possession, medications or even non-prescribed "stuff", it is imperative to keep the pharmaceuticals out of reach of any and all children. So, the OP has a somewhat slanted way of describing people. I'll bet she would use that same description to relate the incident to her best friend. So what? Get with the program. Many children have died or suffered serious and permanent damage due to obtaining access to things they should not have.
Most of these unfortunate events could have been prevented.

  12. I dont think this post is stupid. I dont think you should allow children to reach in your handbag unless everything in that handbag is safe. My sister was driving to a shopping mall and had her purse in the backseat floor of the car. Her four year old went in to the bag and took out a bottle of prescription pills for migraine headaches. The child was demonstrating to his sister (age 2) how to swallow pills. He started to choke-alerting the mother who pulled over. She was able to get immediate help from an ambulance that was literally two cars behind her. My point is, all of this happened on a car ride that takes 8 minutes.

  13. I loathe long hair on boys.
Perhaps OP's description was colored by that same feeling?

Nevermind that fact, it is part of a helpful description.

  14. You are so used to the treachory of what is going on in the middle east being sanitized before displayed for your review that you can't stomache an anonymous blog concerning the welfare of a boy who happens to have long hair.

    That's scary.

  15. Circa 2001? You are too much.

  16. I thought and I thought and I thought, but no way could I connect the war in Iraq with this sweet little boy, who perhaps sports a longer hairstyle. Bottom Line: We must all be vigilant to protect the defenseless and...
    to protect ourselves.

  17. I keep Tylenol & Advil in my purse. They are in one childproof container (a Tylenol container, not an Advil container, after I once watched a toddler OPEN a "childproof" Advil container). I keep my purse on the kitchen counter when I'm at work, and I don't let anyone play *in* it, not even my charges. That's just common sense.

  19. shaped like a mushroom? WTF?

  20. 1238 is an a@@. A piece of s@#t. Mean people suck. YOU suck. I hope people judge you the way you judged the child with the mole. That they see your true colors. Surgery?!! Go lipo your mouth and stop vomiting such filth out of it!!! Vile jerk. I really cannot express my hatred of you enough here. Donate some of your time with Project Smile. Maybe your tune will change, and you may come off relativily human after the experience. Until then, it's not nice to point and stare. And I REALLY HOPE you are not teaching your children to judge like that!! That would be T R A G I C.

    A concered mom

    ReplyDelete
  21. To the concerned mom gripped by HATRED. Please, are YOU any better than the 1238?
Maybe she wasn't being so mean as much as trying to be funny? Did she hurt that child? Do you know who this child is?
Yet, you attacked the poster directly with enough hate to launch another war. We have enough wars now, doncha think?

    ReplyDelete
  22. 807, yes, she may be hurting that child. She may be a mother. She may be teaching that crap to her offspring. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. When I hear people talk like that about a child, I do want to deck them. I don't, but I think it. Trying to be funny or not, the last thing this blog needs is people bashing CHILDREN!! And yes, I did post hate. I hate bad behavior from adults. Mean people suck.

And if you are 1238, shame on you for defending yourself!! It is never nice to make fun of children!! That's as bad as the nanny who laughed at the child falling down the slide from a previous post!! Disgusting!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Perhaps you misread or misunderstood my post. The poster who fun of the child was both ignorant and callous to have done so. Maybe she wanted to add an element of "levity" to this board. I don't think she succeeded. Hopefully, that is not her usual manor but then, I don't know that either. I wouldn't call what she said as "child bashing" but it wasn't nice for sure. Mean people do suck. You are correct. But, so do hate mongers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with you. Thank you for being the voice of reason. In public, I would just turn the other way and think the bad thoughts in my head, to myself. But here, where anyone can read her mean comment, makes me livid. I was rude. On purpose. People like that make me ill. And the whole surgery thing!! It's sad that children today worry about getting themselves fixed. Imagine if that poster has children? If she says stuff like that in front of them, ugh!! I almost started crying the other day when my twelve year old niece told me she was on a diet. She's not a skinny minny, but healthy. She's athletic, and needs to fuel her body. But and offhand comment from her great-grandma about how much she eats set her off. Why joke about fixing a child?!! It only hurts their self image, and does not teach good values. (and neither do hate mongers. as I said, it usually stays in my head) I don't post here often, and my comments are nice. But that poster, and the one from the park, have brought out my bad side. So if she was joking, it was in very bad taste. I can only hope your thought of it being a random thing is true.

  25. My girlfriend was dating a fellow and she nicknamed him "Mr. Mushroom". Now, she was NOT talking about his hairdo!! She wasn't exactly bashing him...
but she wasn't exactly not. She really wasn't being mean, though, and I doubt she shared that with anyone but me, her best friend, so he never knew. Still,
maybe we've all been watching too much "American Idol"! You have some valid points.

  26. My 8 year old daughter has dredlocks. Some people don't agree with it. But she likes them. Those are the things that make us different.

The little boy is probably adorable with his long hair. That post would have been great without adding the posters fashion advise.

Why would you want to help the mother and hurt her at the same time?

In my culture most boys have long hair. What's so bad about it? Should I be opening my ears to these so-called truths?
    Never mind don't answer that!
I'm setting myself up to be ripped apart and I don't want to feel that badly.

Otherwise, it was pretty good info.

  27. factually speaking, jeans with bleached out knee region are circa another time period. and factually speaking a boy with long hair may appear to someone else to be in need of a haircut. it's a description. i doubt everyone is as thin skinned as some of the responders here.

    ReplyDelete
  28. factually speaking a boy with long hair IS a description.

In need of a hair cut is an opinion, factually speaking.

But in the posters defense, they are entitled to opinions. I'm mean who's it really hurting, right?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Some people get annoyed.
    Some get pissed.

Which is better the responders defending the child or the poster?

"Can't we all just get along?"

    ReplyDelete
  30. Maybe we can all "just get along" but we'll never all look alike. Therefore, descriptions are necessary in relating an incident and different people use different descriptive narrative.

    ReplyDelete
  31. agreed!
    and well put.

    So,
If a nanny with big "boobs" can work at Hooters.
Why can't a nanny with one leg work at IHOP?

I'm sorry, that was awful. Just trying to break up the tension.lol

  32. Reminds me of something I heard today on the news. Q: "How long does it take to drive from Florida to Houston" ????

    A: "Depends".

    ReplyDelete
  33. WOW LADIES AND GENTS! I can't believe all of this rubbish is even being talked about. I had to stop reading it all just kept going and going. EVERYONE is intitled to their own opionion. If you don't like it or you can't handle it than this website is not for you. I am a nanny and I think it's just great to have people watching out for other people's kids. Any news good or bad is better than not hearing it at all. It also keeps you in the real world that not everyone is nice. I love my job and make the same mistakes as any parent would but if it were my child being watched by someone else than myself than I would love to know if my nanny had lose pills lying around or if my nanny was being rough. Just be happy that there are eys out there trying to protect your child. That puts us all on the same page right? Let's not act like we're back in High School and bitch about senseless stuff.
