Hi, I currently nanny 1 kid who will start preschool soon. I will have to drop him off and pick him up when he starts preschool. The parents would also like me to run errands while the child is at school. I guess they don't want to pay me for not doing anything while he is at preschool.

My question is what should I do? I have been with them for almost 2 years and that time was dedicated toward being a nanny. I feel as if I am going beyond my job description and am becoming a personal assistant. I get paid $16.00 an hour and feel I should be better compensated if I am going to be a personal assistant AND nanny.

  1. When a child starts school, nanny position still remain nanny positions with a bit of house manager duties mixed in, such as running errands, especially if there are younger children at home. Let's say you are with a family who has an infant and six years plus two siblings later (born two years apart) you will have two children in school plus one at home being 6, 4 and 2. Three more years go by, so the youngest is now in kindergarten. That's when the nanny position will be more of a house manager, mainly because the children are in school all day.

Families are busy and parents are exhausted at the end of their day. Running errands may be part of a nanny job, and in fact, many families are grateful for their nanny finding the time to do simple tasks they may be too tired or not have time to do at the end of the day. After all, they are employees and working parents.

Now if you work for a SAHM who can't find time to run her own errands, I can see why you would be concerned....lol

  2. I guess my question is this: are you comfortable simply not being compensated during the time the child is in school? If not, then you should continue doing the errands. I also very much so agree with the above poster.

  3. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I came to an agreement with the parents so we are all happy.
