What do I do?

Today I was told that the oldest of three children has lice. They just found out today when at school. My problem is being their nanny do I risk and go into work and risk being exposed to possibly getting lice myself, which I hear is very hard to get rid of, or not. My option via my boss was I could use paid time off. Of course who wants to use their paid time off for something that was unplanned and nobody's fault? Of course I can't afford to just not be paid and take the time off. I don't know what to do at this point. Am I being petty? How do I go about this?

  1. Honestly you may have it already. Check yourself for the eggs. Lice can't fly. I wouldn't sit on their couch or hang my coat in the house. You can also use preventatives as Fairy Tale shampoo they sell at Whole Foods. When you get home put dirty clothes in a plastic bag and seal it up tight. Then take a shower. You can also buy this spray for cars and furniture and beds. If I was you. I would use in the car especially the head rest

  2. I wouldn't stop working over lice. It's not that big a deal. There are shampoos you can use that get rid of it. Seriously. And yeah, I've worked with kids that had lice.

  4. As someone who has worked in the Emergency Department of a county hospital in a large city I find this hysterical. If we called in sick for live or bedbugs there would be nobody staffing the ED. Sure, we don't cuddle our patients like you do your charges....but we are still exposed. If you're that concerned take a few days off (yes, as part of your paid leave allocation) while they treat house and kids. Occupational hazard...

  9. It's very possible you already have it, it can take up to two weeks between when you get lice to actually feeling itchy. Just wear your hair up and don't sit on anything soft. Stick with the floor, dining room chairs, places the kids don't usually sit. Get the lice shampoo and preventive stuff and use it. I used to care for a family of five kids and 4/5 had it. If you don't already have it and are aware of where you sit/ how you hug the kids you'll be fine.

  10. Well I nannied and went through three rounds of lice with waist length hair and had no problems. The youngest got it like nothing and it was going around and around at her school. Tea tree oil in your shampoo supposedly the smell repels them according to my friend because I didn't get them though dad wanted me to cut my hair off. I told him not on his life lol. Tea tree oil is also good for the scalp. Couple of drops in your shampoo, shake it up and use normally.

  12. Whether they make $60k a year or $800k a year doesn't impact the value of your work as an individual... the going rates of your own profession and experience do. Whether the school is free or $25,000 has no impact on your salary... your responsibilities and duties do. If anything, they could point out they need to spend a large chunk of their childcare budget on the older one and have much less to pay. Seems unfair to put that kind of personal factor on your job too, right?

    Looking at the facts, you had a 6% raise after one year and a 25% raise for the second year.
    Now your responsibilities are back to those before your big new-child increase because you have only one to care for. If it had been one child all along with generous 6% raises at the one, two, and NOW at the three year mark from $450, that would make your salary with a brand new raise at year three $536/wk. With two added hours at this new rate, your weekly would be $567.

    $600 is still above this rate and added responsibilities make sense.

    Errands you can run and make a learning experience for the little one seem a perfectly reasonable request. "Whatever they ask of me" does not. I would ask for clarity there.

    If you do not want the added responsibility, I would suggest a pay cut commensurate with caring for one child, approximately $567.
