Monday

question....

I volunteered to come babysit C while mom was at hospital having a baby. I am usually Monday-Friday 7:45am to 6:00pm. I was called to duty about 1:00am Friday morning and stayed with C until 5:30pm when we went to hospital to meet baby. Do I ask for that in pay? I got my normal paycheck via PayPal..

  1. If you volunteered, I don't think you get to be paid...
It would be a different story had you been asked to come. I was "on call" when my last MB was pregnant. I was paid hourly for the overnight hours I was at the house while they were at the hospital.
If THAT'S the case, then yes, you should be paid. Otherwise you just did something out of the kindness of your heart.

  2. I hate to say it, but Anonymous is right. If you made it sound like you were volunteering, that's a fuzzy gray area and chances are your MB and DB took that to mean you wanted to be part of their special time. Asking to be paid retrospectively might cause hard feelings right now when emotions are so high.

That said - parents, even if your nanny volunteers to do something nice for you like coming out in the middle of the night and working 12+ hours, giving them SOMETHING as a thank-you is kind of the decent thing to do. Even if not paying them at least part of their rate, a hefty gift card or something similar is a classy act and shows that you know their time is valuable and that you appreciate them.

  4. No one tells their boss "Oh if you need me just call, I'll work for free". We are talking about someone's job here, a job is employment; we seek employment for pay... Because we have bills. Yes she should be paid 1 am to 5:30pm is a long-ass time to USE someone... I mean even if she did volunteer this family knows she works for them for money-- and should have relived her, sent someone, something.

This girl deserves her rightful pay.
