Nanny needs advice...
I am a self employed nanny & babysitter. I have over 15 years of experience. I have never had my information shared on any site, all of the families I work with have all been through word of mouth and from my families passing me on to others. I have never left a family before, so every family I have worked with would be more than happy to give references for me. My problem right now is I am currently working part time with a family, 2, 11-12 hour days. There are three children, one 2 year old and 11 month old twins. I make 10 an hour, and am expected to do all household chores including changing sheets in children's rooms, children's laundry, both parents laundry, feeding the dog, doing all the dishes from the parents, and keeping the house picked up. The oldest child is also very behind, because the nanny before me did not do anything with helping him learn words and communicating. So he gets very frustrated when you can't understand his own language. I know I should be making more than 10 an hour, but I don't know how far up would be too much. Any help would be much appreciated from other nannies and moms!
It depends on where you live, but honestly, for 3 kids incl. a pair of multiples, chores and only part time? At the very least $17. I take care of 2 year old triplets, under 30 hrs per wk, only kids related chores (kids laundry, toys deep clean once a month, etc) and get paid $20.50/hr, with guaranteed wage (if they don't need me for whatever reason they still have to pay), paid sick, vacation and national holidays - and I still think it's kind of low. I've been with the family from the time kids were born, and started at $15, not knowing how hard things are with multiples. Once mother went back to work I asked for a rise (to $18.50). You may work only 2 days but that's 20 hrs! I wouldn't give that much time for just $200 for sure
ReplyDeleteOh boy..they're definitely taking advantage of you...If you've been in the biz for 15 yrs -why do accept anything below $25/hr for multiples? That's the hardest job out there for us nannies and most people don't want to do it . I've had offers I just turn down because I know it will be really hard and just too physical for me!
ReplyDeleteI don't know your area and rate of pay so it's hard to say.Where I live that sounds like $25/hour. At minimum considering the chores...
Hopefully you can sit down with the family and ask for a raise starting asap.Good luck let us know how it goes!
you are not only doing nannying but housekeeping as well - if at all possible, please try to get more money - you will burn out, have a meeting, be very progessional, try to show them what other people are making in a same situation - and keep us posted
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have had a phone interview for a nanny, house manager and cook. I enjoyed speaking with the mother. She understands that she is asking for a lot of work. There are 8 year old twins and a 16 year old daughter. I am to do complete child care, heavy housekeeping, laundry for the entire family, cook for the entire family, drive mother to train station and pick up plus shopping, and all errands. This position is in Long Island NY I'm not sure what the going rate for this type of job is. if anyone has any input on the salary I would greatly appreciate it.
The father and mother are going to skype with me tomorrow for the personal interview. I have many years experience, but am not sure what to expect for this position. It is also 12 hours minimum Mon-Fri and 5 hours Saturday mornings.
Thank you for all of your advice!! I now know that I do need to sit down & ask for a raise. It is such a physically & emotionally tolling job! And it's sad to think I am so experienced, but am making the same as someone who has zero experience. I guess I need to get some paperwork together, and lay it all out showing all that I do, and respectfully tell them that I am
ReplyDeleteWorth more. If they want "the best of the best" then they will have to pay for it. I love my job, and put my whole heart into the children AND the parents. Making sure that things run smoothly, making sure that they come home to a clean house... Even though when I arrow in the morning, the house is a disaster from the parents leaving messes all over the place... Even if I had just worked the day before and left at 6pm, and came back at 7am the next
Morning... It's like a tornado went through the
House. Any tips from you guys on what to show them when I lay it all out? Any certain things I should say to start the conversation? Any tips would be GREATLY appreciated!
