Uncle Cody Not Happy With Star Wars

I took my 5 year old nephew to the new Star Wars movie and 5 minutes into it there is a scene with blood/gore in the fighting which upset him. Also - there were plot points which made no sense such as a young girl learning to be a Jedi in one day. It { edited P-word} me off that these - who are they? - Market a movie like this to kids - the pajamas, toys, and all - but the movie itself is "rated" against the kids, I did not even think about what it was rated when I took him. I grew up with Star Wars and I understand Lucas sold it etc but I am unhappy I could not give my nephew the same experience I had at his age. I own a company which provides numerous different equipment options in re: child care.

  1. It sounds like you've seen Star Wars before. It's quite violent, and can be especially scary for a young child with could turn him off from these great movies forever. I'd suggest to take him again when he's 12-13 years old, in the mean time let him enjoy the merchandise so he can build up the anticipation and excitement to see them when it's more age appropriate. :)

  2. They also market Captain America, X-Men, The Wolverine, Superman, Spider-Man, Batman etc. to children...my two year old female charge has cute Batman socks...doesn't means she's ready to watch the movie. You need to learn your child/charges maturity level and what they can emotionally handle and cognitively understand and then research, research, research about, "said" topic and then make your decisions based on an educated decision. If you get it wrong, remove them promptly but without making a traumatic exit (i.e. something that will definitely stick in their mind forever) and change your plans into something more positively exciting and move on from there. Lesson learned and child not tramitized for life. All is well. :)

  3. " I did not even think about what it was rated when I took him."
    That about sums it up.

  4. I do not understand why people continually ignore the ratings or do not pay attention to them then complain that it was inappropriate for a child. The movie is rated PG-13 which is one step below R. That means that children under 13 would not be allowed in without an adult. Thus, that should indicate that the movie would not be appropriate for a 5 year old. You can show him the old movies that are not as violent as long as you screen them first. I do understand your disappointment that something marketed toward children is becoming more adult. That is a bummer. It would be nice if more effort could be made into making quality films without the gore and sex that young children could enjoy.

    1. I absolutely agree. A 5 year old in a PG-13 rated movie is beyond inappropriate. Maybe use some common sense?

  5. I'm in total agreement with you Anonymous. Don't get why poster would not think to check the rating. I have not seen the previews for this movie and have no interest in it, but poster if you didn't ,if it pissed you off and your nephew was scared why didn't you get up and walk out?! They may have let you see a different movie that is appropriate for a 5 year old child., or maybe refunded part or all of your money! Next time you go to a movie with a child check not only the ratings but Google movie reviews it will list the swear words and the number of times they are said also it will tell you the humor & sex /nudity it contains. As Anonoymous said you need to be careful of pg13 movies because they are only one step down from R but a lot of pg13 movies seems like a mile away from pg! Too sad it has to be this way!
