Wednesday
Holiday Paydays
We apologize to the OP for not getting this post up last week, but since we have another holiday coming up we thought it was still relevant.
Thanksgiving is next Thursday and I assume I'll have at least Thursday and Friday off (employers haven't told me yet). I am paid bi-weekly and that Friday will be my pay day. The last time a holiday fell on pay day I didn't ask for my check ahead of time and had to wait until I returned to work Monday. How does everyone handle this? My employers pay me for holiday time off so I feel greedy asking for my check on Wednesday, even though I realize that's perfectly acceptable.
I wish I could just count on them paying me Wednesday without me prompting. They are extremely forgetful when it comes to paying me and I always have to ask for my check.
Thats so tacky. Oh really you forgot? LOL.
ReplyDeleteMy family never underpays, forgets, or puts me in a position where I have to remind them about any money (except petty cash and that annoys the hell out of me.)
I might just start sending them weekly invoices that include the hours you have worked, between which dates the pay includes, and total they owe. Its a nice gentle reminder and invoicing work is hardly unprofessional.
Like I totally bet they forget the day they get paid.
ReplyDeleteRight? I think I'm starting to realize they, unfortunately, don't value me enough to remember.
DeleteIn your average work place, employees must pick up their check, even if its on their day off. If the workplace is closed for a holiday period, that falls on pay day, the employer must get the pay checks out early. Because nanny's fall into a gray area, a reasonable family would pay you the last day of your work week before the vacation period.
ReplyDeleteI avoid this by always being paid the Monday morning for that week of care. If they will be gone on vacation the following week they will pay me the last day of the week before they leave. They always want me to cash my check that day , not wait til the end of the week. That is such a nice bonus.
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice idea, actually!
DeleteThanks! They forgot, of course. I ended up just saying "So, Friday is pay day and I wasn't sure how you wanted to handle that since I'll be off?". I waited with the kids while DB wrote my check. They had meant to leave it for me that morning but "forgot". They always forget.
ReplyDeleteI work for a family like this. They don't forget. They're trying to hold off so they have fluidity in cash for their own holiday/trip and then claim they forgot when they come back.
ReplyDeleteThis feels spot on to me. The last big vacation was two weeks. The Friday they left was pay day, which they paid me for. But the second week of their vacation was also pay day. Unfortunately, I didn't speak up and had to ask for my money when we all returned on the following Monday.
DeleteI truly believe they did it on purpose, as they were fitting in three different mini vacations and probably wanted extra spending money.
direct deposit, perhaps?
ReplyDeleteI've considered direct deposit but have been burned by it before. My money never cleared until Monday or Tuesday, even though employer deposited it on pay day (Friday).
DeleteNow that I get a check Friday afternoon, I run off to the bank (thankfully mine is open until 7) and deposit the check myself. It still doesn't clear until Tuesday but at least I can get cash back this way to get me through the weekend.
just ask them for cash. they can just stop at the bank get cash and pay you that way. they probably dont realize you cant cash it unless you have enough in your account to hold against it incase it bounced. but if you live pay check to paycheck like many people do its impossible to have that much in your account at all times.you shouldnt have to wait so long for the money you earn. if its an inconvienence to your boss thats too bad. its an inconvienence for you to wait 5 days to get your money as apposed to 20 min for them to stop at an atm. make it so they have no choice or you can find someone else who will. if your worried about wanting proof of income just put it in writing. speak up and stand up for yourelf. its ok to make things easier for yourself. you take care of their children and they should want to make you happy.

ReplyDeleteOMG, I feel really bad reading this post because I did actually forget to pay my Nanny last week. We pay her by cash transfer from our bank account to her bank account, sadly I can't set it up to do it automatically but she gets the cash same day. I could sent up auto checks but there would be a delay in her receipt and she would have to deposit it, etc. So what happened was, I've been crazy busy at work with deadlines and she forgot to remind me (yes, I do ask her to remind me each week). We normally pay her on Thursday and she figured it out on Friday so my husband got her cash on his way home.
ReplyDeleteI only post this to say it is possible to forget. I've tried to come up with a better payment solution, one I could automate but she is not in favor of checks and I can't automate the cash transfer.
