Market Rate

I would love to hear from nannies (and parents,) about what the rates, qualifications, and general nanny market is like in the area they are in.

I am a professional nanny & house manager of seventeen years. I have multiple degrees and certifications that are applicable to the industry as well as experience with special needs, multiples, and extremely large families (7+.) I am currently in the Phoenix area and have a base rate of $15/hour in this area (one child with only basic nanny duties.) I am from the NorthBay Area of San Francisco and when I left there a year and a half ago my base rate was $20/hour for one child and basic nanny duties only. In the Phoenix area my pay rate is considered “high end” and the average positions posted with placement agencies and on sites like Craigslist are for positions that are from $20 PER DAY to $15/hr for several children as well as some housekeeping duties.

  1. I am an hour south of SF. My 1 child full time rate is $16 and part time is $18. I have 8 years experience as a nanny and many more working in day care settings. I do not have a formal education in child development, but do have a formal education in nutrition.

  2. I'm an Atlanta based nanny I work for a family of four (4,2 and twin 4 month olds) I make 20 an hour but usually one of the parents is home to help except for the random day during the week. I started at 18 and two years later when the twins were born was raised to 20! I have an associates in early childhood and I am currently seeking my bachelors. I've worked as a nanny for about ten years with a two year break somewhere in the middle! Love every minute of it and I love the family I work for as well!!

If a family is a good "friend" they wouldn't take advantage of you. They would know you are struggling even working full time. We all know in Bergen County or anywhere else in NNJ pay is usually $15 and up

  11. I care for two children who nap for a considerable portion of the day, in San Francisco. I earn $27ph, half of which is paid in cash, with 44 hours guaranteed. Only basic duties required, and family laundry.

  12. I work as a nanny in Phoenix (Scottsdale). The market here is quite challenging, you have many families that can not afford the service but desperate and are paying ridiculous fees like $10-$12hr, for two to three children. I charge no less than $15/hr per one child, plus mileage and if the kid wants me to buy him stuff at the museums cafeteria i save my receipt and tally everything at the end of each week. At the moment i work part time 25-30hrs /week and I charge $18/hr plus mileage for two children an almost 3 years old and a 3 month old baby. Below that you will find families with no money or cheapskates unwilling to pay for your services.
    Best of luck!

  13. The NYC market is at Park Slope Nanny Survey (google it). Most of the figures above seem high.

    1. You'll get more in Manhattan than in Brooklyn. Even the nicer areas of Brooklyn like Park Slope.

Especially because it seems to me like the Park Slope moms have gotten together for something like collective bargaining.

  14. I'm in the Atlanta area, which has a great market for nannies. I care for 3 children which includes everything related to their car, picking the oldest up from school sometimes, their laundry, etc. I also, if there's time, do the parents' laundry and sometimes meal prep. The parents are extremely understanding of what taking care of 3 children involves and they have reasonable expectations, never making me feel as though I didn't do enough on any given day. I started at $20/hr and after a year received a raise to $21.50/hr. I also have a few weekend families who pay me $20/hr for date nights but I do have one weekend family that pays anywhere from $30 to $50/hr for 2 children. I'd say the average rate for this area is $15-$20/hr but it all depends on the family and your experience, what the job involves, etc. I have no complaints and I love what I do!!
