Civil Liberties & The Nanny

Are these the new normal?

1) My nanny contract.....Nanny will submit to random urinalysis. Upon request for urinalysis, nanny will immediately provide specimen. Urine will be tested for all drugs and narcotics...... This goes on to say, "If urinalysis reveals presence of prescription pharmaceuticals, nanny must produce physician's prescription.

2) As a live-in nanny, the nanny is expected to comply with the rules of the house. To ensure house rules are being adhered to, routine inspections and surprise inspections will be conducted of the nanny's unit.  .....bed is to be made on a daily basis, sheets changed on a weekly basis.....no alcohol, tobacco, firearms or drugs are permitted on employer property at any time....no pets are permitted in the nanny unit or on the employer's property......the nanny may have beverages in the supplied min refrigerator provided they are appropriately disposed of after consumption....all food is to be consumed in the employer's kitchen during the hours of 6AM-8PM.....

What about you? Does your nanny contract contain questionable requirements of any sort? Please share with isynblog@gmail.com  Posts may be edited for space and content.

  1. Grr. The searches and bed-making are over the top requests imho. Would not work there even if I was looking.

  2. Hell no. The worst thing can be a first time employer. What the hell?
If your nanny doesn't have enough common sense to not carry a gun or make her bed, why is she trusted with your child?

  3. Okay, I didn't have a contract for either of my au pair jobs, aside from what I needed for the visa for my first one. I was a live-in for both of them. My room was my space. The kids were under strict orders not to enter my room. They could knock to talk to me only if it was really really important. I could eat anywhere in the house, whenever I wanted, as long as I cleaned up after myself. If I had wanted, I could have brought home one night stands at my first job (seriously). My boyfriend was allowed to visit and stay with me at my second job. I would definitely NOT take this job, no matter how desperate I was.

    1. I agree. If you have so little trust, don't hire that person. Everyone needs a spot of their own at the end of the day. I presume employers still get references and perhaps an initial drug test and criminal history check.

  4. This doesn't look like one job. It looks like multiple jbs

  5. They are excerpts from different contracts.

  6. No midnight snacking? That's crossing the line!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hopefully no nanny would have to be there at midnight!

  8. I would never agree to any of these. Also why I would never agree to be a live-in nanny.

Maintaining boundaries are hard enough, I honestly don't know how live-ins do it.

  9. I've always been a live in and have worked for 4 families. I have never had strict rules listed in my contracts. The families have always asked if they can do anything to make it more comfortable. I think the most important thing is that both the family and nanny have mutual respect for each other.

I agree that if the family feels the need to do random drug testing, room & property searches, and mentions the nanny even owning a gun......they SHOULD NOT be hiring that person.

  10. WTF? Those people are Cray Cray!

  11. How are either of these questionable? Don't do illegal/unprescribed drugs and keep your room neat and tidy? I'll admit the snacking thing is weird, but you could use a little less snacking, Mannah, so no worries. And honestly, what they are saying is don't take food to your room and let it rot.

You "nannies" kill me. You want to be treated and paid as professionals and yet act like immature unprofessionals. Recognize the fact that you are in someone else's homes, taking their money, and helping to raise their kids, and either learn to deal with the idiosyncratic nature of your profession or get a new line of work.

  12. If someone told me I couldn't go in their kitchen at a certain hour, I would not take the job. The other poster is right, it is hard to be a live in and it is hard to employ the live in. This means that a good live in knows that she shouldn't make a three course meal at two am but could quietly and discreetly go to the kitchen and get a snack. for real.

  13. I THINK IT WOULD BE TOTALLY ILLEGAL to make someone provide a prescription to an employer thereby revealing a potentially private and protected medical condition.

Im anti union but I would love to see nannies unionize just to stick it to people like these!

  14. Who are these nutsos?
I'm a professional nanny in SF, make about 90,000 per year, on the books, with health insurance and I live in. I would never live in where I didn't have my own space. Specifically, I cant imagine having to go to my employer's kitchen to get food in the middle of the night or on a Saturday morning. I applaud you nannies who take live in jobs and live in basements or worse yet, on the same floor as the family. I cannot imagine how hard that is to deal with.

I would never put up with the conditions these people are stipulating.

Oh, and I'd never repeatedly visit a blog I hated just to torture the administrators.

But, hey, that's me... professional nanny.

  15. Wow,
just wow. I would be more likely to consent to being a live in if they met my demands. If they weren't getting something out of you living there, why would they have you>

  149. Writing style. As a writer, writing style is a dead give away. Trolls and stalkers are usually not paying close attention to words they commonly misspelled or their grammar habits. Why? Cause they do not know they cant spell or that their grammar is bad. So they do not see the common mistakes that stick out to you like a soar thumb. Again, just one more piece of evidence.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Web Server Logs. If you are hosting your own site, you can see the IPs that log on daily, where they go to on your site and where they came from. This by far is one of the easiest ways to track a known troll. Usually you are able to tell right off the bat by the pages they view on your Web site. If you find they are tracking all over threads they’ve posted in, or by what profiles they view are associated with the troll, you can assume it’s one more piece of evidence that supports the troll has returned.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Subject matter. Depending on the troll, they usually stick to the same subject matter. But I have found this behavior most related to a cyber-stalker. Trolls typically just want to start trouble and looking for attention. Where as a cyber-stalker is there for a particular person(s). So they will usually post in sections of a board they know their victim will be most active. They also post about subjects that interest their victim the most and often create a fake persona to reflect the desired interest of the victim. This is to promote an exchange of dialog.

    ReplyDelete
  152. vBulletin, which is the forum board I use most often logs every users IP. The IP they register with, and any other IP they might logon with and post. This is your first bit of information that you can use to see if members have multiple accounts or if a banned member re-registers at your site. Most forum boards have an IP search feature in the admin panel that will pull all the users associated with an IP address.
