Nannies as Guardians? Do Tell!

Have any nannies here been asked to be appointed as the guardian of their charge in the parents' will? My MB and DB jokingly (I think) mentioned this morning that if they die they are leaving their baby and all of their stuff to me. That made me wonder how many nannies actually get asked that question. I can see parents wanting their child to remain with someone who is the closest to them, but I know that I wouldn't have any idea what to say if I was approached seriously about it.

  1. Hmmm. This is an interesting question. Personally, I have never been asked this of a family, but I could definitely see it as a possibility for some...especially for families that don't have any close relatives to take the children in if something were to happen.

  2. My employers had this discussion just a few months ago with me. They were doing some paperwork involving their wills in case something were to happen to them and they asked if I would take my charge. I said yes in a heartbeat.

I have heard of nannies being asked this and accepting.

Barring extreme circumstances( the children would become wards of the state)

    I would decline the offer.

  4. I am a former nanny. A few years into the relationship, the parents asked me if I'd be my charge's guardian. She's now 15 and I haven't worked for them for 10 years, but am still close to them and am still the person who would be guardian.

What an honor for you OP! I think. LOL.

I would be flattered if I was asked this. For me, my kids are already grown and I would be in a great position to care for someone else's child if they were to {God forbid} pass away. However, if I was still raising children or didn't have any yet, I would have to think about it more. Also, I am single, but if I had a spouse, I would have to consider his opinion as well.

  6. I was asked this and said "yes" in a heartbeat - I cannot imagine anyone else raising my charge if the worst should happen. I am single and have no children, and the parents assured me that in such an extreme case, they have provided for us financially.

  7. I've never been asked but my current family and I are like family. I've been with them for almost 3 years, since their twins were 8 weeks old. I talk to MB and DB about everything and we're super flexible with each other. I'm part time and I'll ask off from my other job at a restaurant if I know they really need me that day. MB had cancer and I was with them through that.

I would say yes in a heartbeat if they asked.
