Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

OPINION
We have to let our nanny of nearly 7 months go. The position was to be longterm, but due to unforseen circumstances we can no longer afford her. We are very pleased with her work and she is great with the kids. She has been very accommodating and understanding. What would be a good parting gift for her? - Anonymous

  1. OP, that is so sad! I have been working with my current family for nearly 6 months and would be devastated if they had to let me go! But the economy is terrible and a lot of people cannot afford what they once could so of course, its totally understandable. If I were your nanny, I would appreciate your assistance in helping me find new employment as soon as possible. Also, I know you are letting her go due to financial issues, but if you can find it in your budget, please pay her some sort of severance because I'm sure she is relying on this income as well. Finally, of course a thoughtful gift from your children such as a photo or cards would be nice. Good luck, OP. I'm sorry to hear you are in such a lousy position. I hope things get better for you soon.

I think a great parting gift would be a nice cash gift of whatever you feel would be appropriate.

Also, it would be wonderful if you could help her get another position. Perhaps you could write a glowing letter of recommendation for her and volunteer to be a reference for her in the future.

Sorry this happened, but you sound great!

    Good luck!

  3. that is such a sad loss, I am sorry for you and your fsmily.

I am sure that the nanny would appreciate any help you can give her in finding a new job. Write her a really glowing reference, and a nice card from the family would be a lovely touch.

I applaud you for being appreciative of your nanny, and thoughtful of her, at a time which must be very stressful for you. Kudos :)

  4. I'm so sorry you have to let her go! In this economy it happens though and no one should blame you!

As for a gift, a glowing letter of reference and a nice card should do it. However since she is being let go without much notice (I assume) and at no fault of her own, I highly encourage yyou to pay her whatever severence you feel you are able. The nanny market is unfortunately suffering in this economy as well and it may takke her a few months to find work to supplement this income.

That being said, I hope things get back on track for you soon op! Tightening purse strings is never an easy thing to do!

  6. Hopefully, you will give her some time to find another job. Are you planning just to let her go without notice? I hope you can keep her for at least a few weeks if possible. I agree with other posters, reference letter, and maybe see if anyone you know is looking for a nanny

  7. I just found my self in a similar situation. The number one thing I wanted was a good letter of reference.

Please give her as much time as you can to find a new job, and offer any help you can in finding work. Check with friends and family to see if they'll need a nanny.

If you can give her severance pay. It would be appreciated.

You can never go wrong with money. A card would be nice too.

OP, I hope things turn out well fo you. Times are tough for everyone now.

  9. Cash and a good rec! Those will be the two things she needs. Give her at LEAST a month's pay and tell her you will be happy to give her a fabulous recommendation to everyone she interviews with.
