Stub Snub

opinion 1
Should I be concerned that I don't receive a pay stub with my paycheck? I'm supposed to be paid on the books with a w2 according to my contract.

  2. YES. A check with no stub screams 1099.

  3. Wait a minute, this isn't necessarily something to be concerned about. Out of all of my nanny jobs, I have Never received a check stub. Many parents choose to pay the nanny's taxes twice a year or quarterly, instead of every month and that is still legal. OP, why don't you casually ask the parents on your next payday "I'm just wondering, how much do you withhold from my check for taxes?" Or you can request a quarterly stub of all your withholdings, so you can keep track.

  4. Nanny on the booksApr 1, 2012, 3:03:00 PM

I am paid on the books and I've never gotten pay stubs with my checks. My family just writes me my check every week and I get all my tax papers at the end of the year from them. I had no trouble doing my taxes this year without any pay stubs.

  5. It's probably ok, but my gut is telling me to look into it.
I don't want to accuse them of being dishonest with me, but. I don't want to end up screwed.

I really hope they are doing things right, because so far this is like a dream job for me.

I'm also a little bothered that whatever company they're using doesn't offer direct deposit. I've never heard of direct deposit not being available.

  6. Well, they might not be using a payroll company - my nanny family of 10 years doesn't. They find it an unnecessary expense.

As them for a breakdown of your withholdings, once. That shouldn't change week to week, assuming you are on a salary. They should be able to show that they withhold $XX.XX for your portion of SS, $XX.XX for state and so on. Then you know.

If your check is a round even number, say $720 and you've an agreed-upon hourly rate of
$18,, then you can easily see that they are NOT withholding anything. AND, FWIW, they are fools for giving you an actual check in stead of cash if they're not withholding! The family is the one who gets into trouble... not you!

  7. Op how much are u paid per hour? How many hours do you work? And how much do you take home every week?

Secondly, are they withholding all of your taxes or just some? You need to clarify bc you might have to end up paying quarterly taxes and I'd you don't you will be fined.

  8. No you don't have to have a pay stub. It would be easier for you to see what deductions they are taking out of your pay. Normally a pay stub will show you total amount less before tax deductions and after tax deductions. They are not required to give you one. if you make the same amount each week ask your employer for a calculation of your payment and just refer back to that. As long as your pay is fixed and not variable it shouldn't be a problem

  9. I never gave my nanny a paystub....I was paying her taxes for her so I had my accountant 'gross up' from her net pay and I paid her taxes quarterly....he would work it so she would owe a little bit at the end of the year and I would pay what she owed. I couldn't really give her a stub with each check because taxes are only paid 4x a year and those amounts would be calculated 4x a year, not weekly with her paycheck. Since I was paying her taxes, she certainly wasn't entitled to any refund for overpayment since that should go to me (since I would have been the one overpaying)

  10. I don't get a paystub. They gave me one with my very first paycheck but since it's going to be exactly the same amount every paycheck, why waste paper?
