A nanny by the name of Amanda H****, recently working for us in the West Village, abruptly stopped showing up for work abandoning our newborn after requesting an advance in salary. Her cell phone has been since disconnected and she has not been found. If you hire Amanda H**** you are making a mistake and putting your child at risk!
(Full name of Nanny is available if needed)
You mean she left your newborn baby alone in the house and fled? How horrid.
ReplyDeleteYes, please clarify if the nanny abandoned her position by not showing up one day or abandoned the BABY by leaving him/her unattended. If she truly did abandon the baby, I certainly hope the police are involved.
ReplyDeleteI too would like clarification on this. Do you mean she abandoned her job and just didn't show up one day or did she leave your infant alone? Big difference IMO!
ReplyDeleteYes, I would like to know if she left your baby home alone too
ReplyDeleteI hope the Police are involved if she actually left your baby alone in the house! 2 things are possible: A)She is a horrible person, and should never care for children again. Or B) She (The Nanny) was actually abducted/killed.
ReplyDeleteBoth options are NOT GOOD!
Daae2009,
ReplyDeleteYikes, I didn't even think of that. The whole cell phone thing makes me feel a tiny bit worried for the girl. That being said, she could just as easily have done it herself, on the knowledge that the family would be trying to contact her through that avenue. Like the rest of you, I hope that she meant "abandoned" as "left her without a nanny", not that she literally left the baby by herself.
If your Nanny just abandoned her job, I wouldn't necessarily classify that as a Bad Nanny Sighting OP. But if the baby was abandoned in the home, then that is pure child neglect/abuse and she should be behind bars. I am hoping that is not the case though, because if someone totally abandoned a newborn infant, the infant would probably die within hours. :(
ReplyDelete@Denise, I'd call that a bad nanny if she stole from this family. She asked for an advance and then fled. That's the direct meaning of "take the money and run." I'm guessing she's ok, just a scammer. The turning off a cell is a great way to make sure she's not found.
ReplyDeleteTo the OP- did you do a background check before hiring her? Or do you have her address? I'd send the police around to check in, and at least get your money back.
Oh please. As a nanny, I have been tricked in to a position where the employer extends the hours and abbreviates the pay. You're damn straight she didn't show up the next day. She isn't your slave, you don't OWN her!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Mika...I have been in positions where I have been deceived big time. My duties grow by the day, yet my salary does not. So the family has no one to blame but their sorry selves when I do not show up the next day for work.
ReplyDeleteNannies deserve respect too!
Mika, what makes you jump right to the conclusion that the nanny was treated badly. I would first ask the OP if any recent changes to the nanny's duties were made, or if there was possibly a reason why the nanny was asking for a raise and didn't get one. I would not place all the blame on the MB without knowing the whole story.
ReplyDeleteOk, the issue here is this story is so unclear.
ReplyDelete1.) You claim she asked for an advance but whether she got it or not. If she took off with the advanced pay having not worked to cover the hours, yes, that's bad but if she just left after asking and being rejected that's her just not wanting to stay on.
2.) People seem to be reading into this that she left your newborn boy alone in a house and just took off but really she just didn't show up for work ("abruptly stopped showing up for work abandoning our newborn"). You REALLY need to be careful with your wording. Your son was NOT abandoned, you were just left in the lurch.
So, from the info you've provided this individual appears to have just quit and cancelled their phone because they were tired of your calls. If no word was said about her quitting that's a pain but not worth reporting here as though she's another child abuser some such. You're just annoyed you have to find another nanny, posting here like a petulant child is not helping matters.
I think this OP was right to post. She is not a "bad nanny" in the sense that she was abusive but she is a bad nanny in the sense that she left the parents with no one to watch their child. That to me is a bad nanny that I would not want to hire.
ReplyDeleteOP states that the nanny "stopped showing up for work". which means she abandoned the parents, not the baby. She also states that the nanny "asked for an advance," not that she gave her an advance.
ReplyDeleteThe nanny should have given notice, rather than just not showing up, and OP is understandably angry, but is she justified in putting the nannies name up in a bad nanny posting? I think there is more to this story.
I think there is more to this story. I would love to hear from Amanda. :)
ReplyDeleteI am a parent and I know any time I hire a Nanny to watch my sons, I take the chance that she may not show up for work the next day. It's life. I had one Nanny have her car break down for three weeks, another Nanny got pneumonia, etc. It is ALWAYS the parent's responsibility to have a back-up plan "just in case." Duh. Life is full of curve balls and no one should neglect to plan ahead. Always have a Plan B in like. Always.
ReplyDeleteAnd to those that think Nannies are bound by contracts...let me tell you guys something. They are BS. They do not hold up in even small claims court. Besides, who takes the time to pay the filing fee, take time off from work, etc...just because their Nanny bailed on them. No one. We all just go on either CL, Care.com and sittercity and start a new Nanny search.
Notice how the op has not answered or made this post more clear. Would be great to get more details about this nanny and exactly what happened.
ReplyDeleteCadence's Mother,
ReplyDeleteYour last sentence said it all. "We all just go on CL, Care.com, or Sittercity to find a new nanny." This is the problem! No wonder the nannies you are hiring are not showing up! You are hiring them from the worst places! Anyone can apply to any of those sites. And the background check that is run for care.com and sittercity is limited. I suggest going through a nanny placement agency. They extensively screen their nannies, verify work history and experience, and generally offer a back-up should your nanny not show up. Sure, agencies can come with hefty fees, but aren't your children worth it? We spend $$$ on cars, clothes, vacations, etc. But what price tag do we put on our children's care? $35 membership fee, or worse yet, FREE from craigslist. It makes me sad.
Rebecca, could you be any more elitist? You are implying that any nanny who would deign to put an ad on care.com or craigslist must be bad. And any parent who would search these sites must be cheap or lazy. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou know, not every city has a reputable nanny agency. Some of us have to make do with what resources we have available.
Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteI have been a full- time (11 hours/day, 5 days/week) for 11 years for a total of 3 different families. My first job was found through the paper, and the other 2 through craigslist. I am a VERY good Nanny, and all of my families have been beyond wonderful! I have tried doing the agency thing, but all the families seemed to "low ball" me (probably because they have to pay a hefty fee to the agency). My experience has been that the craigslist families are willing to pay up to $500 more/month then the agency families. I live in Portland Oregon....maybe it's different here??
As someone that has years of experience and has worked for A-list celebrity clients, I have used Care.com for a couple of jobs. I had great luck using that resource. I do prefer the nanny agency route, but in times like these and also depending on which geographic location one is in, it is sometimes the most effective way to find a position.
ReplyDeleteThis must be a bogus post. The OP never responded to the questions.
