I have a question concerning how much I should be paid for going on vacation with a family. A little background first: I don´t know this family and we made contact through greataupair. The family lives in the Netherlands and I in Spain. They´re going on vacation in the North of France for 2 weeks and would like to brin an aupair with them. They´ve put the question to me about how much I think I should be paid. The kids will be 3 months and 23 months (girls) at the time of the vacation. The parents haven´t asked for anything extraordinary in terms of help, cleaning up after meals, preparing meals for the older girl, and just basic help. They´ll be paying for my airfair (most likely first from spain to netherlands and then netherlands to france) as well as all expenses for the trip. The parents seem very normal and very nice but I know that there´s a disparity between what nannies want for going on vacations and what parents think is reasonable so I´d like advice from everyone!
From the information we´ve exchanged it sounds like they´ll want about 100 hours over the 2 weeks split between being with the whole family, them having time alone, and me just caring for the little one while they focus a bit on the older girl. We´ll be by the beach and from what I´ve read in a really beautiful area! I know I´ll have a great time, I´ve been on vacations with families before, however I had been their nanny for years so it was really comfortable and payment didn´t need discussing.
I´d appreciate any advice you guys have, especially from parents... what do you think is fair? Also if anyone has done anything like this, any problems that arose or any disparities between what was originally expected and what they wanted while you were there.
Thanks!
I don't know about payment, but make sure you have a contract! Stating that your airfare is covered, etc. and what happens if it doesn't work out mid-vacation. I've heart nightmares of families firing nannies and leaving them in the vacation country without any way home. Be specific in your contract!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'd be careful of the fifty hours. That's either one day of care or one evening of care, but not both, and not for seven days.
ReplyDeleteIf I were you, I'd ask for an hourly rate, and keep good records. Have them initial in and out. Otherwise, you will end up with the kid/s from dawn to midnight, but it doesn't count in your hours because they were asleep, you only had one, add excuse here.
I'd be careful. Why can't they find a nanny to go with them from their own home town?
Asking for an hourly rate may work well. The parents will likely self-regulate the hours to stay within their budget, and you will find it fair. That way you aren't overworked (or if you are, you will be rewarded) and the parents will be well aware of what they are paying for.
ReplyDeleteFind out sleeping arrangements. Do you get your own room, or are you sharing with the kiddos?
ReplyDeleteYou should check this out. A bad babysitter pole dancing. With kids in a corner.
ReplyDeleteBad Nanny pic, that could just as easily be the kids' mom. It wouldn't be the first time, and the kids do have the same skin and hair color as the lady on the pole.
ReplyDeleteThe first thought that came to my mind was maybe she is working out? You have to dress like that when you exercise on a pole so that your clothes don't get caught up.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I don't know from experience! ;-) But I did have a friend that put a pole in her bedroom for this purpose... mainly. lol
Bad Nanny pic...
ReplyDeleteWhat does this have to do with the original posting?
This (the comments section of an unrelated post) seems like the wrong place to post it...and with the possibility that the photo is taken out of context (if it could be the MOTHER or the situation could be different--exercising, etc.), perhaps this website is the wrong place, too.
While I hate to distract more from the original post, I have to say this pole picture is a big so what? It looks to me more like the lady is excercising (it takes MAJOR strength to do what she's doing there!) or practicing a circus act. Maybe she's auditioning for Cirque Du Soleil or Circus Oz, who knows, but you don't learn that stuff by just watching other people do it, it takes practice.
