.... WHAT?!
1) After School Care Needed for Boy (Seattle)
Our situation: I'm a single mom who works third shift (11pm-6am) for Boeing. My son is an independent kid of 12, who if left to his own devices, would play video games, eat me out of house and home, and run all over to various friends' houses. Unfortunately, I have to sleep during the day and can't always be up to supervise! ;) What I'm looking for is someone to watch my son in the afternoons after school while I'm sleeping. You would need to make sure he does his chores, takes out the dog, does his homework, and does his laundry. No need to cook him dinner, as he's perfectly capable of doing it--I taught him how to cook and do laundry at an early age. Just make sure his "dinner" isn't 4 bowls of cereal. Feel free to play video games with him after chores, watch a movie, or just hang out with him. He's an interesting little soul--he's just 12 and he needs to be supervised to make sure he gets his responsibilities taken care of and he stays on task. He's extremely bright, engaging, and talking to him is generally like talking to an adult. This isn't "babysitting" in the classic sense--more like "protecting a 12 year old from himself." ;)
Your gender is unimportant--he may even relate better to a male. I would prefer, however, that mature people apply. No teenagers, please.
No housecleaning necessary unless you feel like earning extra (I certainly am willing to pay more if you feel like cleaning!) I don't mind if you have a child of your own and need to bring him or her with you. Alex is extremely good with younger children. You'll need to be familiar with pre-teen boys, if possible, and be okay with dogs (We have a small Pomeranian/Yorkie mix who loves to cuddle).
Pay is negotiable--I have no idea what to offer, so you tell me what you'd charge for 2-3 hours of care per day, and we'll go from there!

For the family who wants someone who is fluent in English, I think they have a real need. That letter was so full of mistakes, I don't think even spell check could have helped much.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, a bunch of cheapskates, with the notable exception of the $20-$27 an hour offer.
I think the award this week goes to the family offering $700 a month for a full time job, and then doesn't mind if the nanny gets a part time job on weekends to make ends meet. I have no words for that. It's okay with them if the nanny works 7 days a week, forever! PIGS!! Oh, I guess I found my voice after all.
loved the creepy dad from dc...
ReplyDeleteWhy is #1 on there?
ReplyDeletedjembé,
ReplyDeleteIt is in no particular order. When I have a really good entry for #1... I will say so.
This one was just cute... no other reason. I honestly did not have anything that stood out and blew me away this week.
I would love for more people to send in CL-WTF ads because then we would have a better chance of finding something spectacular.
OK thanks for the explanation, MPP... I was thinking I must be missing something egregious. :)
ReplyDeleteNot at all! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI really like #1...good for the mom to teach her boy to be independent at an early age. And the people in Union City, CA...I live close by and let me tell you - they will have a really hard time finding somebody for that kind of money in our area, even with the bad economy.
ReplyDeleteI think with #1 the mom could time her sleep better and not have to have someone coming in to look after her 12 year old. But I do wonder what she does with him at nights when she is working from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.? Does he stay home alone?
ReplyDeleteOk, Unsure about the Dad one, was there more written that got changed? Because I read it and it did not look like a personals ad to me. But what you might list as criteria on Care.com and other Nanny/Sitter sites.
ReplyDeleteOh and the #1 mom in answer to Just another mommy. She probably feels he is old enough to stay in bed and get some sleep.
P.S. Do Dads always seem to get raked over the coals on advertising for nannies in Craig’s list? Like someone assumes they are perverts or something automatically? Because I do not find any Nannies listing by dads on Craig’s list that do not seem to get a rant or other problem added on. I am sure there are a few but it seems more often then not someone rants about him listing for a nanny being a pervert. But many of them look like what mothers post with less words. Yeah, yeah there are ALWAYS exceptions that do read like a Personal ad, and those generally end up on WTF.
I am trying to figure out why #9 is on the list. I am 100% positive that I know this person and she is a wonderful, caring, charismatic person that would make an awesome nanny! I would hate for her to lose out on something good because someone felt that her ad fell into the WTF category.
ReplyDeleteAre people missing the point of WTF? Sometimes it's obvious as hell, and sometimes it's the money, or it's the lack of education, and sometimes it's a great offer. Sometimes the parents are in the porn business. Not all of them are going to out of the park. If you want better WTF, then check your local CL weekly, and send in the good ones. Help, don't complain. I check weekly, or try to, but here it is just day cares looking for kids. Nothing worth sending in. I have sent in one where a dirty dad was looking for a live in. It's the only good one I have ever found, but at least I'm trying to help. Are you?
ReplyDeletej.d.c.f.b.
ReplyDeleteVillage said it best (thank you)... it is not always a bad thing to make it on CL-WTF. Sometimes it is funny, sometimes sad or in the case of #9... not your average run-of-the-mill Nanny Ad.
As I said above - it was slim pickins this week. Nothing really blew me away. However, I am extremely grateful to those that do take the time out of their day to submit Ads... many of whom contribute weekly. Without them... there would be no CL-WTF.
wow - the is the second time today that I have made an innocent (or so I thought) statement and got slammed for it. Guess I just don't see the point of this sometimes. And I did submit a entry this past week, but it was not posted.
ReplyDeleteMMP-I thought this week's WTF was pretty good, but how can you beat the witch to be stepmother? You overshadowed yourself this week.
ReplyDeletej.d.c.f.b.
ReplyDeletePlease don't feel that way.
I don't know what your e-mail is so that I could tell you if yours was one of them... but I only turned away 2 Submissions this week. Curious Dad was one of them (sorry!).
Do you remember what it was?
And before I get CD mad ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe Ad was already posted in CL-WTF last week and it would have been redundant. However... I would love to see more Submissions from him.
MPP, I'm just curious. What are your criteria for posting ads sent in? I think I sent in two or three in one email but you only posted one of them. Are some just not WTF-ish enough to make it here? Like Village said, it is mostly just people with home daycares advertising here. I always get giddy when I see a weird ad because I like submitting them.
ReplyDeletesorry, I considered a few submissions, but only sent in one and I don't remember which one. I also don't think that I know what I am doing when it comes to submitting anything.
ReplyDeleteMissMannah
ReplyDeleteI do not follow a specific criteria but if I have to choose between 2 Ads that resemble each other... I will pick the one that gives you a better feel for the Author's personality.
Ah gotcha. I'll have to pilfer through again later this week to see if we have anything interesting. You're right--nothing was all that great this week. Though I am really wondering what that creepy dad's original ad said.
ReplyDelete#2 The 10 yr old can watch the 15 month old, nice!
ReplyDelete#9 Let me not sugar coat this. You do not deserve to be caring for animals, let alone a child!
What a freakin mess!
What Ad? I did not turn in an Ad this week. Unless my late Ad from last week, was seen this week. In which case. Not a big deal.
ReplyDeleteCurious Dad
ReplyDeleteYou are right! I dug through my trash to check the date. I have heard of delays... but wow!
I do not know why it took so long to get to me. Weird.
just another mommy:
ReplyDeletetime her sleep better? you have got to be kidding me.
Not all moms can sit on their asses and eat bon-bons. Some actually have to work to support their children. This mom obviously works the night shift to do just that, not cus it's a freaking party.
Time her sleep better? You're an idiot.
What I mean by "time her sleep better" is to sleep while he is in school rather than in the afternoon when he is out of school. I did some quick figuring and she should still be able to get enough sleep by doing that. Sorry you think I'm an idiot, my husband worked night shifts so I understand how they work. But I also know that since she gets off at 6 a.m., it's a little different than if she didn't get off until 2:00 p.m.
ReplyDeletejust another freaking idiot mommy:
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you really caught me at a bad time but you are really a freaking idiot.
You don't even know this mom. Not everyone can fall asleep immediately after work: sometimes they need to wind down first.
Oh my god you are a freaking idiot. Just shut up. Please.
Just another mommy:
ReplyDeleteIf she is a single mom doing night shift work. Gets off at 6am, depending on how close she lives to work and the traffic for the area, that could be anywhere from a 10 minute to over an hour commute. Son needs to get up and go to school. Don't you think she might have to deal with that?
The public middle schools in Everette WA, have a start time of 7:30 to 8:15 and an end time of 2pm to 2:45pm. http://cms.everett.k12.wa.us/everett/School%20Hours
If she gets home in a timely manner, she probably helps him get going to school.
Then she can wind down, take a shower or whatever she needs before bed. The earliest she probably can get to bed is 8am, more like 9am. If she tries to get 8 hours sleep that is 4pm to 5pm for when she gets up. So at best she will need someone between 2pm and 5pm. Looks like the 2-3 hours she quoted on Craig’s list is correct.
Your husband has the same advantage I do, a wife to take care of things, like kids needing to get to school or coming home from school and feeding them. She has neither husband nor wife. He can get to bed within an hour of getting home and getting up by 2pm/3pm. Because you are there to take care of things. She does not.
Of course the only person who truly knows what they need is the one who put the Craig’s list Ad together in the first place.
I also do shift work. Though mine rotate.
curious dad,
ReplyDeleteI could not have said it better myself. I totally agree.
SAHMs are really bad at math generally. I think Just Another Mommy needs to double check hers.
Jeez, did everybody get their coffee today? A point can be made without cutting someone off at the knees, you know.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100% curious dad and you made your point respectfully.
What's wrong with #3? I just saw a similar ad in LA ($300/week live in) but it was for 55 hours, not 40.
ReplyDelete#27 is most definitely a scam. I have seen the same ad (just change the kids ages) in other cities.
shut up gym rat. you suck and so does your mom.
ReplyDeleteHey dadiswrongonthisone,
ReplyDeleteKiss my ass you fat bitch.
I wasn't even directing my comment towards you but if you want to act like a loser and take the blame, be my guest. You are deserving of it now. No reason for you to have been so nasty to me. And by the way you stupid bitch, my mom is dead.
ReplyDeletegym rat,
ReplyDeleteyou said:

You should have stopped there. I would have more respect for you if you did.
and my mom's dead too. it's just an expression. lighten up.

Weren't you "cutting someone off at the knees" when you sunk to an all time low of calling someone a "fat bitch"? Seriously. Dadiswrong was wrong to tell you to shut up but that is how you retaliate? I agree with your first statement that points can be made respectfully. But then you blew it with your other comments to dadiswrong. There are much classier ways to get your point across. Using the word "bitch" when speaking to someone you don't even know certainly speaks to your level of intelligence and class. Come up with something a little more original. Please.
When you talk about someone's Mom, though, that is going just a bit to far, imo. That would set me off in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteBoth of them were wrong.
ReplyDeleteagreed.
ReplyDeleteya'll betta pray, chilluns cus you all goin' to H-E-Double Hockey Sticks. I aint been ta this here blog in a dog's age, but the second I mosey in I see you gals aint learned a durned thing: pheewww-eee! cursin' like truck drivers! it's damn shameful, it is.
ReplyDeletepray. pray fer yer souls.
My time at this blog has become less and less.
ReplyDeleteSo tired of ppl getting way off topic.
wbn:
ReplyDeleteMy pet peeve is when people come to the blog to post how they have been coming less. I mean, how much more off topic can you get than that?
My son doesn't start school til 9am, and on Wednesday at 1025am. He gets out at 3:30. Im sorry but I need more then 6.5 hours to sleep if I work full time and have a child to raise. JMO. Shoot I don't work and I need more then 6.5 hours :P
