Beware of Merle from the Orange-Montclair, NJ area

Received Thursday, December 18, 2008
danger 2 I hired a 46 year old Indian woman, mother of 3 grown children, 2 boys, one girl – to nanny my two boys ages 6 & 9. I did a background check and checked her reference from a family she supposedly worked with for 7 years. Her name is Merle. After two and a half weeks on the job, she dropped my boys off at the Montclair, NJ YMCA for their basketball and swimming class, which went from 3:45-4:30, and NEVER returned to pick them up (Tuesday, Dec 9, 2008). When the Y called me to tell me my nanny wasn’t there, at 4:55 I tried to call her cell and her home, no luck – I was on a train home from NYC and was able to get my children at 5:45. I was obviously concerned that something terrible had happened to my nanny, after all, who would abandon two little boys at the local Y??!! I called the Orange police (the town in which she lives) to let them know I was concerned for her well being. Long story short, she did just ditch my kids, I know this because my ex husband drove to her house at 10:00 pm and found her car in the driveway. We contacted the police again, they came to her home and knocked on the door, her husband came down and told my ex husband he didn’t know what had happened. My ex asked for the keys to my house, my sons backpack with all of his school books and the car seat back. I have not heard from her at all. I post this because I want to make sure no one has to experience what I have, or what my kids have either. Also, I count myself lucky that the staff at the Montclair YMCA went above and beyond and didn’t let my kids just walk out the door. But please, don’t hire this woman!!!

  1. wow...what makes someone think its okay to ditch children?! was there any misunderstanding??

  2. That is horrible!! I cannot imagine what that woman was thinking!

  3. Isn't that illegal? Can't you file charges on her for child abandonment or something?? There has to be something............

  4. I in no way condone this nanny's behavior... I just wonder if OP knowingly drove her off or if this actually came as a "surprise". Or maybe Merle was just crazy. Hmmm...

  5. no matter what, the nanny had no right to ditch the kids. Why not just not show up for work? Why would she leave them at the YMCA?

  6. even if the OP knowingly drove her off...that is still a terrible thing to do to innocent kids.

  7. I would alert any applicable authorities about this. The most that will possibly happen is that seh will get a visit from the police or some agency to take a report...but at least it might put her on notice about doing something like this again.

I think I would also call her and let her know that you have reported her because what she did was endanger children. She needs to know how serious what she did is.
You dodged a bullet because of an on the ball YMCA employee. Now its time to save the next family from this happening at all.

  8. If you had called the police at the time of the incident (meaning at 4:55 when it was apparent she wasn't coming) then the police would have done something (after finding several hours later that indeed she did abandon them). It is doubtful that they will do anything now.

  16. It's illegale when they put a picture of Merle's face and her last name on this so we know who the hell she is. Then, they should stamp BLACKLISTED across her face and then, maybe then you would have a case in court, dumb ass. Until then, wise up and stop abandoning children!

  17. Oh see, i saw those deleted posts too, and wondered what the deal was.... and there's NO picture and NO last name of the nanny on this post! So what the hell is somebody freaking out over???!

  23. Jeezus man, the reason you get a nanny is so you don't have to worry about pick ups and drop offs. what a rotten person to do this. she sounds like a coward. if she wanted to ditch you, even if you were a bitch, she could have just never returned the next day!

  24. Marypoppinpills...
Do you understand that actively trying to prevent employment of someone who was not arrested or charged with a crime is illegal?
You can tell people about the bad nanny but when you tell them not to hire that crosses a line. You can be sued. One poster is going on the words of her children. Re-think the whole do not hire and just stick to sightings.

How is it that this blog would be held responsible for something another poster said? Wouldn't it be the person that wrote this that would have the problem? Of course, not that anyone would ever be able to prove whoever wrote it.

  26. Just curious:
ISYN is now actively telling people not to hire someone. I think we can all say that if we ran into Merle from the Orange Montclair area we could glean from this website not to hire her. We can also deduct that it was her former employer that made the post. If Merle chose to, she could lawyer up and press charges. She has a case.

...and you hold how many law degrees?
And ISYN didn't tell anyone not to hire Merle, the poster did. ISYN holds no fault for printing someone else's opinion. Newspapers do it all the time. Why do you think Journalists are allowed to withhold their sources?
Please. Get a grip and stop obsessing over this.

  28. Hey Just Curious:

The Headline was "Do not Hire".
They were telling people not to hire this person. I see it's been changed. Well done MPP and Jane. ty.
By the way.. I don't condone the actions of terrible nannys. But let's take the high road.

You know what I've noticed? Jane and MPP are really good about listening to their readers and taking their suggestions. Looks to me like they heard you.

They do a lot of good here, and in the end, it's all because they care for the well-being of children. I don't think they'd ever intentionally do anything to hurt someone.

It looks to me like you were mighty angry. Maybe next time you shouldn't be so harsh?

  30. Hi Just Curious...
I am very angry. This site should be used as a legitimate resource for parents. When they start breaking the law it becomes compromised. I wish it was as easy as outing bad nannies and having them NEVER work again. Unfortunately it's not that simple.
Let's keep I saw your Nanny as I saw your Nanny.. and NOT "Please fire your Nanny"

  31. Oh shut the fuck up, you asshole busy body. Who the fuck cares what you think? Is this your blog? Are you a frequent supporter? Have you donated to the blog? Do you support the blog by clicking ads?

No, you come here to bitch and moan, bitch and moan.

Seems to me this site was started to warn parents. A parent who has just had a screwed up experience with a bad nanny needs a venue to warn OTHER Parents about the experiences.

    Why so angry anyway?

You ARE very angry? Good God.. why? I can understand your being upset if this is something that really bothered you, but the problem you complained incessantly about has been fixed, so why not say you WERE angry (or upset?)
I think your issues go much deeper than just being pissed at this blog.

  33. "Let's keep I saw your Nanny as I saw your Nanny.. and NOT "Please fire your Nanny"

WTF? Who died and made you boss?

  34. Dr. Lamar: You don't sound very stable. A. What they were doing was illegal. B. A parent should warn others but let's not have the bad nannies come back and sue. C Shut the fuck up you asshole busy-body? Really? Can't come up with anything more intelligent than that? Please.

Pissed off Nanny: When your boss comes here to tell everyone not to hire you, get back to us.

Unlike someone with unstable behavior like you, my Boss would have no need to fire me because I am rational and respectful and they really appreciate me.

    But thanks for trying.

Im not the one who calls myself "Pissed Off"
Why are you so pissed? Try to relax. take a bath or something. You will feel better.
