Woman Indicted For Allegedly Exploiting Nanny
A Walnut Creek real-estate agent will appear in federal court today on charges that she lured a Peruvian nanny to the East Bay with promises of a better life but instead kept her as an indentured servant for nearly two years. Mabelle de la Rosa Dann, 45, also known as Mabelle Crabbe, was indicted by a federal grand jury in June. She has pleaded not guilty to a charge of harboring an illegal alien for the purpose of private financial gain.
Dann and others brought Zoraida Pena-Canal, 30, of Peru into the United States on a three-month visitor's visa in July 2006, authorities said. Pena-Canal had worked for Dann's sister and Dann as a housekeeper and nanny in Peru several years earlier, investigators said. (cont'd)

  2. Many people come into this country legally via a 3 month work visa. Not all choose to stay ilegally. Weather her employer took her papers & passport away daily,or not, when her 3 months was up she should have gone to the Immigration office and reported what happened. She also could have gone to the police as soon as she realized she was duped.. There are no victims in this story. There are two criminals. Both wanting something from the other..both adults..both capable of following the law and both willing to break the law in order to get what they wanted.
I am not saying treating an immigrant poorly(or anyone else for that matter) or any other way than decently is acceptable. I am simply stating that both women broke the law. They should both be penalized.
Anyone staying in this country illegally should be deported asap and never allowed to re-enter..unless they have been kidnapped.(this nanny could have walked out of the apartment and to the nearest police station at any time while mom was away at work. She did not. She chose to break the law and stay in this counrty illegally.)Did she get what she deserved?Hell NO.no one deserves to be treated as a slave. But had she abided by the law she may have kept herself from being in such a position for said number of years!

    Two criminal my friends..TWO!

  3. I do have to agree somewhat. Whenever I read one of these type of criminal stories, I can't understand why the exploited person chooses to not contact police, or how they can not realize that what's happening is absolutely illegal on the part of their "employer". In some cases they don't have the opportunity at all, or they are being physically abused to a shocking extent, but it doesn't sound like that was the case here.
