Small park in downtown Boston off of Atlantic Ave near the Wharf

nanny sighting logo Yesterday, Thursday, October 2. I was visiting the park with my daughter and noticed a young boy (1 year old or younger) walking around by himself without an adult. I think he had on tan cords. He was eating the sand and it was making him gag. I then noticed a woman (nanny I guess) looking over at him and me from time to time as she was busy talking with another nanny. She didn't even know the child was eating sand. She didn't care that he was walking around by himself. She finally picked him up because it was time to leave and then she picked up the little girl and put them in a double stroller. She then picked up her cell phone and talked for about 5 minutes while both kids where just sitting in their strollers with the sun in their eyes. She had total disregard for the children. She had long brown hair pulled back with a head band. Nice looking, olive skin. She had an accent (not American born) and thin frame. I think she had on brown pants/cords. I hope the mother finds this posting and reads it. If I were you I would fire her right away. No telling what else she does or doesn't do to your children. No respect or regard for your child's needs. Hope your not paying out the nose for her. I hate posting this, but seeing this with my own eyes just got my goat.

  1. Things could be worse. She wasn't being abusive. Maybe she was tired and needed a break. And a little sand will not kill anyone.

  2. I thought neglect was a form of abuse? Regaurdless, nannies can be tired and take a break when the kiddies are napping. If they won't nap then she can even plop them in front of the tv in their room for "quiet time" so she can recharge. Not at the park. And yeah, sand might not kill him if he doesn't strangle on it, but it's terrible for his teethe and tummy. REALLY bad. I can't imagine someone excusing this.

  3. Can't die from eating sand? I imagine it's just as bad as what happened to this boy.

    And he died....

  4. There's many instances where nobody thought that SAND would kill them!

  5. I believe this was written by MaryPoppinPIlls, which means its a valid post. Trust her judgment, because I have never noticed her overreacting to anything on here. if she says it was bad, it was bad.
And yes, I think neglect is probably the most prevalent form of abuse. The number of nanies we are going to read about on here beating their charges at the park is going to be slim to none. Part of what this site is intended to do is alert parents when their seemingly perfect nanny morphs into Slugetta the moment they walk ut the door and treats their children with little emotional regard, or substandard care and protection.

That kind of abuse has very long lasting effects. I would definitley want to know if my child's little psyche was being filled with indifference and impatience instead of love and attention. It all plays a part in how they grow up feeling about themselves. I want my kids to feel like the world is a happy place and that they are loved and safe and valuable...not that they are nuisances, barely worth the time and trouble it takes for somebody to get up off a bench and keep them from choking.

One thing I always really loved was going in to pick up one of my kids from the crib after they had just woken up from the night or a nap and seeing the huge smile come across that little face when they saw me, and their whole body start to shake with excitement because they knew somebody who loved them had just shown up and it was going to be a really good time now. How heartbreaking to think that some babies wake up to a gruff face and an indifferent yank out of bed, to a cold and irritated diaper change, a nonengaging feeding and then into a stroller or playpen to be ignored. Yeah, I would definitely want to know.

  6. “Stacy’s boyfriend told Jesse to close his eyes and mouth, to close everything,” according to the child’s baby sitter, Dehrion Orlando of Santa Maria. “Juan swept sand over Jesse’s face, and Jesse took two big gulps of sand.”

Orlando told investigators that Nunez never told Jesse that he was going to sweep sand over the child’s face.

“Jesse sat up and was trying to get the sand out of his mouth. Jesse could not talk,” according to Orlando.

The child’s mother, uncle and Nunez then held the boy’s head back and poured Pepsi down his throat in an attempt to get the sand out of his mouth. When that didn’t work they rushed him to the shoreline to rinse the sand from his mouth. The boy then became unconscious, Orlando said to investigators.

.... and this 5 yo boy died after ingesting 2 gulps of sand.
So, excuse me, but it upsets me that nobody finds this little boy eating sand DANGEROUS! Google it. You'll see just how many children died playing in sand!

    Thank you, OP!

  7. I didn't Author the Post, Mom. I just put it up for someone else that Submitted it. But I absolutely believe this child was in danger by putting the sand in his mouth!

  9. That fact that a 1 year old is walking around by himself is scary. I would be really upset if I was the mother of this boy. I hope she reads this blog!

  10. Sand is nature's litter box! Ingesting animal feces can lead to intestinal parasites which can be very dangerous for young children.

Additionally, it could be a sign of Pica, and the parents should be informed of this so they can take him to see a doctor.

  11. I agree, an unsupervised 1 year old at the park is a big no-no.
Mom or nanny, she should know better.

I also agree no child should be left to think that it is okay to eat sand. Mom or nanny should have been close at hand to help teach the child that eating sand is a no-no.Sand holds many germs and parasites,as mentioned by another poster above.

As far as Pica goes,I am sorry but that is a huge over-reaction at this point.
An infants mouth is an important organ, not just for eating but for exploration and pleasure.
It is typical and normal behavior for a 1 yr old to place many and most items he or she comes across in their mouth. This is how they learn and explore.
PICA is generally considered only if the child is at an age where eating objects, such as sand, wood, cardboard or chalk is considered developmentally inappropriate.Age one is not considered such.
    Thanks OP for the post!

And to all the people who mentioned the possibility of animal feces being present in a sand box...SO TRUE!!!

  15. So sad to think that these kinds of nannies are still out and about and employed. Hopefully, she'll be recognized and out of a job.

  16. If a child eats sand, gags on it, and eats it again, what does that say about the child?

  17. I got a worm from eating sand. Of course I was in Ecuador, but it could happen anywhere. Don't forget, some of these dumb ass nannies are letting their children piss and shit in the sand with reckless abandon.

  18. darwinism,
It says that the child is a one year old. And that the nanny is a freak of nature, because, by your logic, she should have long since persihed, given her common senes level.

  19. Allowing a child to eat sand is obviously a complete common sense NO-NO. But "unattended" seems vague here. I don't believe a caregiver has to always be within 18 inches of an early walker, as long as they are keeping an eye on the child, keeping them SAFE (which this particular nanny was not), and engaging them to some extent. Babies can walk around and explore in a safe area, which in theory, a plaground should be. Is this playground fenced in? Virtually all playgrounds here are.

Darwinism, how did you manage to survive this long without drowning in the rain? Have you never actually laid eyes on a living one year old human?
