Nanny Description: Nanny, 50-60 years old, wearing white shoes, white pants and a light blue t-shirt. Short curly hair, Caribbean or AA, medium sized.
Child Description: Boy 8-12 mos., wearing blue sandals, khaki shorts and a striped polo. Sitting in a McClaren stroller with a funky bright blue and yellow print, Caucasian, very cute.
What Happens: Beautiful day. Child in stroller. I am out walking, chasing after my own. That boy is still in his stroller. He is eating cheerios or something similar out of a small plastic container. Okay, so maybe the child is sick. Maybe they are just out for a breath of fresh air. Fine. Wait, is nanny asleep? Yes, nanny has dozed off. I check my watch. I look around. Are other people seeing this? Yes, that father is. We shake our head. I check my watch. A little girl screeches with excitement and the nanny is jolted awake. I ask you the parents of this little boy, is this situation okay with YOU??
Where: The Promenade in Brooklyn Heights.
Wow. A sleeping Nanny? And no post on this thread for 3 1/2 hrs.?
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked ... everyone loves a napping Nanny report!
I bet if OP had taken a photo of our sleeping beauty there'd have been 30 posts by now! Hee-hee.
this kind of thing really gets me steamed! sleeping?!?
ReplyDeleteso dangerous.
as a nanny i'm at parks all the time. i have never seen a nanny actually sleeping, but i have seen many not paying any attention to their charges that have been left "stollerized". reading a magazine, hour long text sessions( who the fuck does that anyway?), getting a tan, eating. you name it they do it. my favorite by far was a stout lady munching away with a 12-15 month old in a stroller looking dazed and a barefoot 3 year old running a muck covered in water and dirt (there is no water feature at this park.) it was like 80 degrees outside and the pavement was hot to the touch. 3 year old was whining about her burning feet. the nanny didn't look up once at the children. but she did address me and explained that this was a great park for nannies to come to. there is a group of them that meet up a few times week. i should join them. cross over to the dark side? no thank you darth-nanny.
i am sometimes tempted to wheel the little ones off just a few feet to see if they even notice. i have a sneaking suspicion they wouldn't.
"Darth Nanny"? .... LMAO!
ReplyDeleteThat is flippin' hilarious!
Thanks for my laugh of the day, Nashville Nanny!
Who sleeps at a park, anyway? Nanny or not. Weird!
ReplyDeletei am a nanny and i say that if we want to prevent this dangerous situation, we have to question why would a person fall asleep in public? this is not normal. could this nanny be working more than one job, too long of hours as a nanny, is she sick or depressed?
ReplyDelete(i am a very, very sleepy person who has fallen asleep at a concert but never, ever with the kids in public.)
it could be that the parents have video cameras at home and the nanny doesn't want to get caught taking a nap at home.
as a nanny, i am glad i can feel comfortable to nap with the kids on occaision. (at the house, of course!)i usually don't need to at my current job, but a few times i have.
as a parent, please talk to your nanny about how she is feeling. ask her if she's tired. it shouldn't be every day, but let her know that if she needs a break that it's okay to nap at home with the kids.
if you think your nanny would advantage of the situation by laying around for long hours and not interacting with the kids, then you should address this issue separately. but do make sure the nanny is rested, or able to rest.
this comes from my experience of working 9 hour days at my current job.
I can admit I get sleepy during the day being a nanny, but thats just laziness. how do we know that she wasn't the mom of this child?
