Playground at Carroll Park in Brooklyn, NY

Received Wednesday, December 12, 2007
I saw a scary sight this afternoon as an adult, who I presumed to be the nanny was leaving a park with two children. The children were white, one was in a brown and steel stroller with a brown and tan plaid design and was a boy under 2. The other child was also a boy under 3. The nanny was very large and walked very stiffly. The little boy exited the park at Carroll St. and leered towards Smith Street. The caretaker yelled after him but could not move quick enough to grab the kid. She did try. She left the stroller and tried to run for the child but she couldn't run. I think this is a hazard. My nanny is a large woman herself, but she could run after any of our children if she had to, even our 13 year old! The boy wearing the camouflage jacket and brown pants was saved by a a man who looked to be wearing a fire fighter's coat. The child was brought back from being in the street. Another woman ran and stood by the baby carriage as this unfolded. The nanny was appreciative but is not fit enough to be caring for two young children. Sorry. The nanny was an older black woman of about 45 yrs old, sweet face, reddish curled hair, pink and white jacket and on the short side with a very heavy build.

  1. Ahem, OP.

"an older... woman of about 45 yrs old"

Let me be the first to tell you to get fucked.

    Older at 45... sheesh.

  2. Sue,

You'll probably be the first and the last to tell her anything with language like that.

  4. Wow, I agree. The OP was posting about a genuine concern. It was completely out of line to respond with ignorance like that. I teach my kids that swearing is a sign of stunted verbal development.

  5. With a one year old and a two year old, that nanny needs a double stroller. No matter how athletic you are, if you have one in the stroller and the other takes off, you have a problem.

  6. Can't we get sue do whatever's comment taken off.......I'm 48 and I wasn't offended. The nanny wasn't fit for her job.......she needs to be fired!

  7. Kate in Co,
I bet Sue feels embarassed for her crude antics. Still, I don't think we have to agree with everything we read. Let us not press for censorship but implore those we congregate with to use their senses.

  8. LOL
I'm 45 and just walked in from 2 hours of karate class (and I worked my booty off at the gym while the kids were at school today too.)

However, when I was younger, I would have thought 45 old too...so I wasn't offended...but I did get a laugh out of it. Oh, how our perspecitve changes!

  10. I'm assuming the poster doesn't mean "older" in the sense of one's lifetime, but "older" for the general assumption of the average nanny's age (20s-30s)...

  11. I think this is a great blog but the racial nature of the posts do bother me. My mother is dark and her children are very fair. People always asked her if she was the nanny. Very insulting. I'm just saying people should not assume that a woman who looks or sounds different from her children is a nanny.

  12. It isn't the racial nature of some posts that bother you, it is the racial nature of some people. Not just on this blog, but "out there".

Sad. I get it. I'm in the same boat.

I married an Arab. And my good friends think it's funny to constantly make jokes about flying with me or tweezing my son's eyebrows to get him off the "watch list". And those are the people I know.

    :(

  13. Aw, Mr ...
That is just too messed up for words. I sure hope you put your 'friends' in their place when they make such thoughtless comments.
I don't even know what to say ...
