This occurred yesterday, (8/29) at the upper level food court at the Westchester Mall. A nanny who would be described as thin, tall, short brown hair, AA, about 25-29 was with two children in a back and front blue and steel stroller. She had a stroller and way to corral the two children safely. I don't think they were twins, close in age with brown hair, pale skin. The girl was about 2 with a pink jumper with a white shirt under it and the little boy had same hair color pushed up in a very slight, faux Mohawk and was wearing cargo shorts to his knees, teva sandals and a "you guessed it" t-shirt. The nanny got them out of the stroller and set them up at the table and then went to order from the counter. The little boy was back and fourth. The little girl was sitting at the table playing with a baby shrek(?). After they had eaten for awhile, the nanny still she left them sitting to visit the ATM located in the corner. This is especially odd since it was next to the elevator where she would pass by with the children safely in the stroller just 5 minutes later. The little boy (3ish) was all over the place. I know people think the Westchester is safe, but it is no reason not to use caution. The children could have been hurt, choked or even taken away by a stranger. Good kids, by the way.
how far away was the nanny from the children? was the food court overly crowded? were the children still eating? if she was very far away, or if there were a lot of people and chaos around, or if the kids were still eating then obviously don't step away from them...but if the nanny stepped 5 feet away from them to accomplish these tasks while the children were within her line of vision...i don't see what the big deal is. it seems like the kids were ok just playing for a few moments.
ReplyDeletei need more info before i can say this is a bad sighting or not.
oh, and she was in the westchester mall. not sarajevo.
ReplyDeleteSarajevo Mom,
ReplyDeleteThis non thinking nanny also chose a table fairly near the escalators.
When the child approached the escalator with his arm raised to feel the black plastic strip as it moved, a Food court worker with a broom and dust ban approached him and told him not to do that. We are talking about basic common sense.
I just read childcaregonewrong.blogspot.com for the first time. Having done that I can now imagine how this story could have ended if it had not been for the mall worker and myself keeping an eye on these children.
It's erroneous to assume that in anenvironemnt such as the Westchester your children are unlikely to cross paths with people who want to cause harm to them. Child predators and pedophiles come from all socio-economic backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteSorry Maggie, but at this point I have to say PLEASE change that picif you insist on having one on here. I am sure you are lovely, but that pic is frightening. Your eyes look like lasers will shoot out of them!
ReplyDelete9:02, the subject at hand is not "Maggie", and I hate to tell you this, but when women pick other women a part they just make themselves sound like jealous ugly bitches...no offense to you my dear...
ReplyDeleteNow, back to the actual topic of discussion. I don't think it's safe in this day and age to leave toddlers unattended in any public setting at any time...and I never would!
When I was a small child (living in a VERY small suburb) in an exceptionally upscale neighborhood tragedy touched my life. My best friend's mother took us to a very nice (ehem, expensive) resteraunt for her Birthday. About half way through the dinner her mother got distracted for just a moment, and we literally wondered just across the small room (there was a lobster tank and we were absolutely enthralled with it.) While we stood there staring at the lobsters we were approached by a man, he grabbed both of us...I bit him, she didn't...her body was found 5 months later in a ditch 40 miles a way. I will never forget this.
Small children need supervision at all times...
