Barnes & Noble on Broadway and 84th in NYC

Received Wednesday, August 22, 2007
I saw a nanny today at Barnes & Noble on Broadway and 84th Street. She was African American, and had mid length hair. She was sitting on the floor in the corner of the kid's section upstairs and she was completely asleep. She had a gray Mclaren stroller next to her with a girl that was maybe 4 years old. The girl had on a pink jacket, pink and white pants, white sneakers and she had long brown hair. I was there for about 30 minutes. and the nanny did not move an inch.

  2. And the reason you didn't "accidently" chuck a book at her head was??? I imagine that would have woken her up.

  3. Don`t know why some of these nannies are hired. Some of them have the position for only the money.I feel so sad for their charges.

  4. Hanging out at the Barnes & Noble is the oldest trick in the nanny book. I never let our nanny take my kids there when we lived in the city. Has anyone ever taken a look at what goes on there? It looks like a daycare center gone wild. The nannies bring the kids there and let them go loose while they sit and hang out and do nothing.
    Parents...wake up!!!

  9. I can't believe how disrespectful people are in Barnes and Noble. Those books are for people to buy, not browse through. Go to the damn library if you don't intend on making a purchase!

  10. Lazy nanny. Eveyone does need a break, but that does not mean that they have to neglect a child. The whole thing about non stop bench nannies and sleeping nannies doing so because they need a break is nonsense. A professional nanny can take a break without neglecting his/her charge, it's all about time and place.

  11. I worked for a SAHM three weeks that was in the house most of the time. It was so terrible. You know how you feel the tension without a word being said. Like you can't even sit down and take a break, or close your eyes for 15 minutes. If your sitting forget it. The type that will say "are you done with lunch yet?" Or your driving home from dropping off their child at school, and they will call you on your cellphone asking where are you, are you almost home.

Maybe, this nanny works for a terrible SAHM thats the same way.

  13. leave nannies alone...you don't know what hell most of them go through

  14. 10:30pm, True, some SAHMs can ba a pain when they are inexperienced, and want to make you run a marathon for every penny you earn. However, not all SAHMs are like that, I worked for some of the nicest SAHMs. I was unfortunate enough to work for one abusive SAHM (maybe we both had the same person:), and guess what, I QUIT! Try it, it feels good to quit when your boss is being a jerk.

1:45pm, & 1:46pm, Sleeping on the job, or non-stop benching is not the answer. Help abusive employers upgrade their standards by quitting. The one that I quit from several years ago is still having trouble replacing me. Her nannies are quitting left and right. Now that feels great!

  15. Umm, this site is called ISAWYOURNANNY, so if you have issues with people discussing disgusting nanny behavior, go get some prozac.

  16. Seems everytime I hear a nanny comments on she writes of all the wonderful (or not so wonderful) famileis she has worked for. My question is why have you all worked for so many families? Maybe this is typical but if were going to hire a nanny, I would be apprehensive about hiring someone who had not worked terribly long term for anyone and had worked for lots of families.

  17. Its takes time to find a nice family to work for. Like a diamond in the rough

  18. Hi 8:12pm,

I worked for many families over a period of more than a dozen years for several reasons including:

-Short term positions such as summer jobs

-Numerous saturday night gigs so parents could go out and reconnect.

-many years on in the field = more families because kids do get older.

-Short tem out of town gigs

-Group babysitting. As the kids get older, and less demanding, some struggling families prefer to have their children picked up from school and cared for in groups of two or three. So two years of picking up three pre-teens from school (three families) + two weekend gigs (two families) over the same two year period = five families in two years.
-Bad families. Some families took my patience for a ride, so was always happy to make my exit.

If you are concerned about hiring a nanny who has had many families, find out under what circumstances she/he left those families. If the answers are too foggy, or everything seems too sketchy, go with your gut instinct.

  19. I agree with 12:18AM. Some families are fresh out of hell. Unfortunately, most of the time the parents are to blame, but the children are easy to get along with.

  20. To 8:12pm:

I am a college student and I babysit on a summer by summer basis with an agency. I started to babysit when I was in high school, so by the time I graduate from college, I will have had six or so families in a few years. I hope this answers your question.

    Wendy.

  21. Thanks Wendy. That certainly makes sense and helps. Thank you also for being nice about it. I am not used to that on here.

  23. OMG...are people still seriously using African Amercan on here? Don't you OP's read this blog? Are you trying to start a riot????

  24. Oh no!, not the African American, AA, Black, African, etc debate again. I am black (neither American, nor African) and I can't take this debate anymore. It is exhausting.

Where is Yaya by the way. She once posted some good info on what is appropriate for certain situations.

  27. some debates have no resolution and will pop up again and again. Like the Death Penalty Debate. Lots of never ending debate and yet, nothing changes one way or the other.

  28. Sprak, you are right. Once in a while, some idiot asks 'why does anyone need a nanny, my mother raised 10 children without help, and I am raising my daughter all by myself". Then another idiot will pop up and acccuse SAHMs of being trapped and jealous, and wishing they could go back to work. I think every debate has an idiot whose role is to polarize things without any regard or respect for the varying types of households.

  29. With all due respect, somewhat annymous, your comments have nothing to do with the debate at hand. Please read back before you comment.
