I saw your nanny walking in Bay Ridge today, dressed in jeans and a grey zipped up sweatshirt today. She had the hood pulled up over her head, but looked to have dark hair and be Hispanic. She was pushing twin boys in a blue side by side stroller. They were wearing shorts or short pants because their legs were showing. She had a blanket tucked around them but a lot of skin was still showing. The stroller did not have an arch canopy. The sun shield was but a bit of a rectangle. The temperature was about 62 in NYC today, real feel 55 degrees. The baby's also had short sleeves on because every now and again I could see their pale arms. I could not tell how old they were but I would venture a guess they were between 10 -16 months. The nanny was well dressed with a sweatshirt and her hood gave her good protection from the rain but the babies heads were all wet and they had to be cold. Why wouldn't a nanny dress a child at least as warm as she was dressed? This incident occurred around 1-2 PM.
Sounds like she only cared about her well being so sad. Well if the parents read this and their kids come down with a cold in the next couple of days they will know why. Geeze I live in NJ and it was a dreary day. I made sure I had my son in a jacket.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you should ask permission from the person who submitted this report to post this sighting on the Manhattan Mothers of Twins Website.

Some people, nannies included I suppose, just do not have any common sense. Poor little babies.
ReplyDeleteI have had this problem. not all the time is it the nannys fault. last summer 1 day it was a rainy day and cool and the mom had me take her son out in shorts and no coat. I did call and ask and her reply was dont worry hes hot blooded like me.
ReplyDeleteHow does one know who dressed the children? Some parents prefer to dress their children and sometimes give nannies specific directtions as to what the kids should wear for the day. Some of you might say the nanny should use commonsense on a day like this and I agree. In situations like this, communicating with parents and telling them what the weather is like outside may help children wear appropriate clothing for the weather. That nanny did not have the childre`s best interest at heart.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, it's not always the nanny's fault. My friend was going to meet up with her employer and charge at the library in the dead of winter. My friend got there, and her boss handed over the kid and left. When the nanny (my friend) took the blankie off the two year old, we were all shocked...No shoes, no socks! The poor kid, the mother is one of those always-spaced-out people, so she probably did't even realize that the kid had no shoes & socks on.
ReplyDeleteI don't buy it. How hard is it to grab some extra kids clothing or extra blankets and stuff it in the carriage or stroller.
ReplyDeleteI agree with 4:15.
ReplyDeleteI am a nanny to a two year old boy, whose father always gets him dressed in the mornings before I arrive, HOWEVER on several occasions dad picked a very inappropriate choice of clothing for the weather. I always take my charge on outtings after lunch every day (rain or shine, as his parents and myself agree fresh air and getting out of the house are very important for a growing child.) On numerous occassions I've stepped out the front door with him only to realize that he's not prepared for the day and turn around and go right back inside for a jacket, a heavier shirt, pants instead of shorts, or even different shoes. Dad has even learned to laugh about this, and my charge has taken to saying "silly daddy" each time we have to change his outfit before heading out. LOL
When my charge is with me, I am in charge of all of his needs. As an adult it is my duty to keep him safe, healthy and comfortable, and clothing is just one of the many parts to doing this.
I agree sometimes its not the nannies fault some parents care more about fashion, I am speaking from experience. In saying that it does drive me crazy to see nannies pushing kids around in the winter with their little legs exposed. I have pointed it out to a couple of fellow nannies and they told me that kids don't feel the cold. I wish someone would post a medical report proving that young children feel the cold like everyone else and put this myth to an end.
ReplyDeleteOk, what about if the child grew out of his winter clothes and theres nothing warm for the child to wear. or like what the other nanny says u meet up w/ the parent somewhere. I have done that lots of times, I would meet the mom at work and in the summer the child had on heavy pants and a turtle neck. I would have to bring him back to my house and put on a outfit that my child had outgrew.
ReplyDeleteTo the first scenario, if the "parents" can afford a nanny, they can afford winter clothing that fits their child.
ReplyDeleteTo the second scenario, that's just stupid parenting, but I'd say a good nanny would be aware of these tendencies in the parents and would quickly learn that it was necessary to discuss such things explicitly BEFORE picking up the child. ie: "it may rain tomorrow, it would be a good idea to pack a warm jacket for Johnny, just in case". Or shorts if it is supposed to be sweltering, etc. A good nanny may have to take up some slack for bad parents, even if she or he is looking for a better job in the meantime!
If there is absolutely nothing for a child to wear on a cold winter day, maybe the child can stay home with nanny so mom and dad can get their act together, and drive to Kmart to get some appropriate clothing (one size larger so they fit for two winters). Also chains like Carters, Gymboree, and Children's Place tend to have a sale rack in the back with some functional clothing.
ReplyDeleteMy local $1 store carries infant/toddler sweat shirts and long sleeved t's.
ReplyDeleteOP here. The nanny was not wearing some lightweight, stylish Leah Remini hoodie. It looked more like a male sweatshirt. It was thick and large. The contrast of those poor wet children and their bare skin enraged me! Are you suggesting that nannies have no minds? I am not a nanny and I don't employ a nanny but if I mistakenly directed a nanny to do something that was improper, I would hope she would call upon that functioning part of her brain and do the right thing.
ReplyDeleteLeah Remini has a line of hoodies?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the OP. The nanny was comfortable with a sweater and hood. Didn't she feel bad for those poor kids. I know in NY theres stores that sell cheap sweaters and t-shirts. Just wondering if she had money on her could she have gone in and bought two, and give the parents the bill.
ReplyDeleteI would love a Leah Remini hoodie! She is so stylish.
ReplyDelete5:59: Me too. I love how she dresses. Where do we get these Leah Remini hoodies?????
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I just googled Leah Remini and I am not getting any info on the hoodies. I want one too...
ReplyDeleteHas anyone heard from JMT lately? By the way, I want one of those hoodies too. I hope they have them in hot pink or lilac.

ReplyDeleteOkay, seriously, do you think maybe Leah Remini reads this blog?
