I SAW YOUR NANNY SALARY SURVEY

Thank you to all who participated in our informal nanny salary survey. The results of the survey are available HERE.

And from the Village Voice...
A proposed domestic workers' bill of rights, which cleared the State Senate labor committee last week proposes a $12 minimum wage for domestic workers ($14 per hour by 2010), overtime pay, generous paid vacation and sick leave, advance notice of termination and severance pay. It also mandates an extra $2 hourly wage hike for nannies without employer-provided health insurance. If passed, it would be enforced primarily through the courts. Domestic workers would be able to file complaints with the Department of Labor or sue in civil court if their employers fail to provide any of these benefits. If employers are found to have willfully withheld some of these benefits, they could be charged with a misdemeanor crime. (Click here to read the full story.)

  1. Hi J.D. ~
Thank you for the Nanny Survey ... Could you do more of those? I love reading them!
What happened to the "Sherman Oaks" (L.A., CA) comments? I wanted to see what everyone had to say about the Chow Mein Grandma!

  2. It's about time. People who don't value their nannies enough to pay them a salary they can live on are as bad as slave owners. If you have a problem with paying your nanny at least $12-$14/hour, put your child in DAYCARE!! It makes no sense that a nanny that cares for your precious children should make less than someone who cares for burgers and fries at In-N-Out.

  3. A reputable daycare in NY is about $12 an hour for one child.

  4. Does the proposed domestic workers' bill of rights also apply to nannies who arein the US illegally and not paying taxes?

  5. I am a nanny and paid of the books. I would like to be paid on the book, but don't know what steps I need to take.

  6. 5:04, you sound like an ass with a chip on your shoulder.

Withholding taxes is the responsibility of the employer. An employer should provided an employee a W-4 and a W-2.

I'm as anti immigrant as they come and yet I am strangely able to recognize who's fault the non payment of taxes is.

  7. I would love to see all those greedy mother f-ers have to pay $2 more per hour to cover health insurance!

  9. "The 46-year-old nanny from Trinidad is still fuming that her employers—a Wall Street executive and a music tutor—fired her last month after she took a week off to have necessary surgery. "I told them I have a family too, and my kids don't want to see me dead!" Now she's fighting over her last paycheck, which she says was about $1,000 short in promised severance pay. Dee would not disclose her employers' names while there is still a chance that the dispute can be resolved amicably. "

So basically a bunch of greedy wealthy people who have money to spend have burned nannies and now all of us must pay. Such is the way of America.

And wise word to the Trinidadian, I bet your boss won't pay you the back severence because rich people have power issues. It has something to do with never knowing if anyone likes them for them. They realize all they have is $$ and the power that comes with that so their other skills and attributes dull in comparison.

The good news is, A judge will have little tolerance for some rich snob who douches their nanny.
    I hope you get RICH!

  10. JD- did only nannies complete the salary survey?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I believe about 4-5 employers completed the survey. At least two of those employers were responding in reference to the cost of daycare.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think more employers would have responded if the survey weren't only about nanny salaries. We don't have a nanny, but we so have a part time babysitter.

  13. I'ts 12:54 here, and I meant to say we do have a part time babysitter. Typo -- typed an s instead of a d.

  14. 5:04PM here,

To: 6:41 PM. I was not asking for insults. I was simply asking a plain question because I do not know the answer. I am neither an accountant nor an attorney, so honestly I don't know these things. I pay my taxes, and I have done so for as long as I have been employed, and I always thought it was my responsibility to pay my taxes. I know a few people who get cash off the books, and decide not to file taxes (and I think it is wrong). Rather than hurl insults at me, please let me know if you know anything about who is covered by the new bill. May peace and good health be with you.

  15. Laws protect everyone, legal or not. You can't murder or rob someone who is illegal. The responsibility of the employer is to follow the law. He/she must pay the required minimum if passed, Social Security tax, etc. The big hitch is, if you hire someone who is not legal to work, you are already breaking the law, so I suppose the new law won't change anything for the illegal workers already being exploited. It will just be ignored.

  19. To: 8:21PM (aka 8:23PM),

This is 5:4PM (aka 3:56PM). Thank you very much for the information. You have been very helpful, and have inspired me to keep myself updated on the bill. I am a SAHM (who works part time) and frequent the playgrounds alot with my kids, and I know that some of the nannies I see are here illegally. This must be a twisted situation for lawmakers, parents and the nannies because some of these nannies are amazing. I truly feel sorry for eveyone involved and I hope that somehow things work out. Thank you again for getting back to me. May peace and good health be with you.

I think you asked a valid question, and 6:41 is the one with the chip on her shoulder.
Even though I believe the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights has been long over due, I don't know if this proposed law will actually make it through because I see alot of downfalls with it. First problem being that for those Employers that don't follow it to a "T", your looking at the possiblity of the Courts getting bogged down by lawsuits. Secondly, most people that can afford a Nanny out of necessity, will no longer be able to afford them (or their 4 wks. paid vacation). Only those that have the money, and could typically pay their Nannys more, but don't, will be the ones that I see finally getting their comeuppance. I feel sorry for the families that take their last dime so that they can afford a quality Nanny ... losing out and having to go to daycare because they can't pay all of the perks that this bill allows.

  21. Some of these Nannies are well-paid, good to see employers who appreciate the hard work and show it. Some of those employers need to explain to this person how to properly pay for quality childcare.. check out what she is paying for FOUR kids! Slave labor, ridiculous!

I know! I ran into this post on Craigslist, also. The nerve. Trust me ... she'll get what she pays for, too. I feel sorry for her kids.
Do you know what else pissed me off? And just for reference, I'm a SAHM ... but all the postings that asked for Nanny/Housekeeper! How in the world do these moms expect to get a quality Nanny if they are asking her to do dishes, laundry/ironing, scrubbing toilets? That's just a glorified Housekeeper that babysits your kids. Do Nannys actually pick up these jobs where they get paid crap for slave labor AND watching kids? I am totally blown away. Seems to me that these Employers are just trying to get the most bang for their buck, and I find it outrageous.

You are so right. Those are the people hiring the "nannies" that get posted about on here. Many of the negligent park bench sitters are exhausted cleaning women, not real nannies at all.

  25. You are all over paid. You are simply one step away from homelessness. Complain about $15 - please. You deserve the same as Johnny frying potatoes at McDonalds...Minimum Wage!
