Today - outside a trendy sandwich shop at Jane st, near w. 4th, a nanny, I think Hispanic, with died blond hair, overweight, little boy, blond in a brown plaid shirt asleep in royal blue bugaboo chameleon with fuzzy turquoise lining, asked me a stranger on a bench outside the shop to watch her charge while she went inside for lunch. I told her that her job was to never ever take her eyes off of the child, and that she should never leave him with strangers. This woman did not show good judgment.
GOOD FOR YOU....NEXT TIME TAKE THE CHILD AND CALL THE POLICE...THIS PEOPLE ARE CRAZY...
ReplyDeleteSo, what did the nanny say in reply?
ReplyDeleteshe just glared at me and tried to force the stroller into the shop
ReplyDeleteDid she try to get another person to watch the baby?
ReplyDeleteMore Info!
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy.
And since the child was obviosuly not the one who needed to inhale the sandwich, one must wonder what other errands she squeezed in to her day. Had that same stroller made it through the grimey doors of the TOY BOX?
What is the Toy Box? An adult book store?
ReplyDeleteWhile I completely agree the nanny was horribly out of line in asking a stranger to watch her charge, I don't agree with 7:27's comment about running errands. Sorry to burst some of you posters' bubbles, but even nannies need to eat sometime. Obviously she should not have asked someone else to watch the child, but she is allowed to eat!
ReplyDelete8:25,
ReplyDeleteperhaps these nannies need to learn the concept of brown bagging it. Or maybe they are just to used to employers who hand them cash for lunch or worse yet prepare their meals. Give these nannies food, they ear for a day. Teach them to brown bag it-they know it isn't your prob.
8:25 are you saying that this was her only option: to ask a stranger to watch her charge while she gets her lunch? Sure, nannies have to eat and they have the right to eat, but not like this nanny tried to.
ReplyDelete9:23PM
ReplyDeleteYou sound like a peach. I bet your nanny just loves her job.
What frustrates me about this site is that people seem to think nannies are just hired help. Yes there are some bad nannies out there that shouldn't be around children but for every bad nanny there is a good. Nannies are there to help working parents out, to help them raise their children in a safe, loving and stimulating environment. Some nannies work ridiculous hours, I work 70+ a week and sometimes it is impossible to get things you need to get done, done. If the children are in a good mood, rested and not sick, I take them to the shops to do what I need to do, stopping at the pet shop and toy store and involving them in everything I do. This nanny shouldn't have asked someone else to watch her charge, that is just plain dangerous but someone's post about nannies brown bagging their lunch or having people make it for them, everyone's situation is different and why shouldn't someone, even if it is a nanny on the clock, be able to grab a sandwich for lunch? Perhaps she was on her way to the park or somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI guess my point is people are so quick to put all nannies in the same corner and while I agree this nanny didn't show good judgement, we aren't all the same
10:31, if you had actually read what I wrote at 8:25, you would see I obviously did not agree with leaving her child with a stranger. That is never okay and I don't understand how anyone could think it would be okay! My point was that 7:27 acted as if eating was something personal that should not be done while on the job. Even nannies need to eat, and don't get a half-hour or hour lunch break like most working people. If she needed to run in to get a sandwich, then of course she should have brought the child with her. But not starve just because she is on duty.
ReplyDeleteGood God. I'm trying to count the number of times I have eaten lunch without pawning my child off on a STRANGER.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would have agreed to watch the child and then called the cops. The cops would have then called the parents and the story would have had a happy ending -- DUMB AS AN OX NANNY FIRED.
As a nanny, I often grab lunch for myself while I am out running errands for the family that employees me. In fact, it is not often that they actually ask me to run errands, it is usually that I notice they are getting low on diapers or formula, etc. so I will run to Babies R US and buy them (of course they pay me back). I know how much they want to just spend time with the baby in the evening and on the weekends rather than running errands.
ReplyDeleteAnd often times I get hungry - as most humans do. So I stop and get myself some lunch, with a 5 month old in tow. NEVER would I leave her with a stranger! I can only imagine having to call the parents to say "I was irresponsible and wanted to have lunch without worrying about the baby, and this little old lady seemed so nice...but when I came out she was gone".
I know of people who will leave their napping child at the house while they run to the grocery store at the end of the street. Their argument is "I am only gone for 10 mins. and she is sleeping in her crib". But what happens when that poor child wakes up or worse, someone knows the child is there alone and they kidnap it - that's a fun one to explain to the police.
Those are the same people who leave their dogs trapped in a hot car without even a window slightly open.
Common sense is something people lack in today's society - maybe we ought to start teaching that in the schools instead of worrying about teaching our children Spanish (believe me, you don't want to get me started on people living in this country that can't speak English).
there is absolutely nothing wrong with a nanny going out to buy herself lunch! I bet most people on here who work office jobs do that every single day! BUT-she should not be asking total strangers to watch the child while she does that. If it is too hard to bring the stroller inside the shop you want-go somewhere else!
ReplyDeleteA few things:
ReplyDeleteWhat is the name of this sandwich shop? It sounds to me like a person in a wheelchair would have a problem getting in the door and that, my friend is a huge problem.
The Toy Box is indeed an adult Toy Store.
The nannies need to get inside that sandwich shop seems curious. What was the lure inside the shop? Perhaps it was not cured meat and bread but something more sinister.
There is no shortage of lunch spots in NYC.
I don't get it: was the nanny overweight or was the child?
ReplyDeleteUmmmmmmm LISA
ReplyDeleteThey're there to WATCH the KID all DAY LONG and make sure your child is DELIGHTED
ALL DAY LONG
they're not supposed to eat or pee or smile or drink or talk.
Duh, Lisa, it's not like they're human or anything....
Housewife:
ReplyDeleteYou need a break from your homelife.
The issue is not with eating, it's with leaving the child with a stranger.
Thank you housewife for putting all ofus nannies in our place! If only our employers had given us that information before a problem arose! lol
ReplyDeleteBitchwife:
ReplyDeleteYou have no sense of humor. Your poor husband.
Is there a nanny "handbook"?
ReplyDeleteKid friend restaurants
Clean public restrooms
Emergency numbers to call
Stranger danger warnings
Appropriate dress
Appropriate language
Social Etiquette
First Aide
Appropriate vs Inappropriate:
neighborhoods, parks, modes of transportation, snacks, beverages, diet
etc. etc. etc.
Sounds like it is needed.
4:33PM
ReplyDeleteInstead of a handbook, why don't parents just hire a nanny who knows these basics?
A nanny
Pardon my french: But 11:09am you ignorant fucking cow, you "don't want to get started on people who live in this country who don't speak english" WOW you seem like a bitch, wouldn't want to be associated with you that's for sure! Definitely wouldn't include you in my circle of moms! Yes many people in society lack common sense, I agree with you there BUT if you want your children to have some why don't you TEACH THEM HONEY? Learning a second language is a great asset in society today, perhaps you are not lucky enough like some out there who can speak multiple languages. Children learning Spanish in school is excellent, it will help them greatly in their future, they will benefit from this in the work force not just by learning how to speak spanish but french, and mandarin, etc... I love the fact that I live in a country that is so multicultural, it is a shame it isn't a culture that is more accepting of this fact. Please remember 11:09 that this land that we live on truly belongs to the native americans, not us-we are immigrants just like those today who 'can't speak english'. Shame on you...perhaps you need to learn some common sense before you can teach them to your children.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has lived in country that is not my own, I can tell you that it is damn hard to learn the language.
ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't judge someone unless you have walked a mile in their shoes.
And we don't all wear skechers.
Um, how did we get on the subject of speaking English? I don't give a rat's ass how hard it is to learn. You damn well will learn it just like those very people who made this country great learned it.
ReplyDeleteAs for this sighting, the nanny was pushing the cadillac of strollers. Which is just pathetic. These mother's who think they deserve accolades because their child is pushed around in town in a bug. Woo hoo. Guess what? It is a hell of a lot more important WHO is pushing the stroller. Next time, invest your $ in a top tier nanny.
Shameless, status seeking limousine liberals. Damn you.
8:53 PM
ReplyDeleteI was agreeing with you until that last sentence. You think it is liberals buying bugs? Not in my hood, it is all the conservative Republicans!
mika you are an excellent specimen of a mom, such articulate language and way of speaking. your kids must be as perfect as you. Yet you speak of and degrade nannies so much. When a nanny is wrong, she is wrong, that I admit, but in this case, your words speak louder than your actions. You should be very proud of yourself.
ReplyDeleteMikka is articulate? Ha ha ha ha. Mikka is the queen of run-on sentences, completely clueless regarding the use of commas and capitals, and is obviously not very well educated. However, that isn't the point of posting on this blog. Indeed, everyone is welcomed and encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions, but really, for her to declare that this land on which we live truly belongs to the Native Americans is ludicrous and exposes an ignorance beyond the pale.
ReplyDeleteNow that is liberalism in its most dangerous form.
Sprak are you kidding me? I'm sorry who was on this land before the British, Irish, Polish, Italians etc immigrated here...hmmmm? As far as using commas capitals etc, who gives a shit? You write your damn comments on here not to be graded by a teacher..PUHLEASE! Ignorant prat, that would be YOU. This land belongs to everyone here but when people start to 'bash immigrants' that's where I get upset. Did we not all come from immigrants? Stupid cow.
ReplyDeleteI never disparaged you for your sub-par grammar but for your idiotic take on history. Also, I would never "bash" immigrants, at least those here legally, as my ancestors immigrated to the United States from other countries. Just to make sure I had not judged you overly harshly, I carefully read your comments above and came to the very same conclusion about you and your obvious lack of education and your limited native intelligence. I'm truly sorry, but as some might say, "the proof is in the pudding". However, please don't allow this to deter you in any way from posting here, as I find your tirades quite humorous.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Mika - I wasn't bashing immigrant all together, I am just saying I think it is ignorant that these people move here - many not even legal - and do not bother to learn the language that is spoken here.
ReplyDeleteI do not go to countries where I cannot speak the language because of how I feel (I also recognize there is a BIG difference between vacationing somewhere and moving somewhere permanently).
Oh, and just so you know, I speak English, as well as Spanish-which I learned in school-and Italian - as I someday plan to take my children to the country where their English speaking great-great grandparents came from many years ago (and yes, they did learn English and became legal citizens).
If you move to a foreign country, you better learn the language. My father did when he moved to the US, as did his first wife and three children. I would never presume to move to another country and expect to be coddled the way foreigners are here. Well, let me rephrase. If someone moves here and brings their aged parents here, I wouldn't presume the aged parents would learn the language or try to become American. But I would be impressed if they did. :)
ReplyDeleteSprak, I wouldn't stop posting because of the rubbish flowing from your mouth...you have no significance in this world to me...but please educate me on who lived in the wonderful U S OF A before the immigrants came over..I supposed you might say the worms were here before the native americans, the trees perhaps?
ReplyDeleteGet a history book and learn instead of repeatedly exposing your ignorance. But do keep up with your posts. I do so enjoy a daily giggle.
ReplyDeleteOhhh hmmmm bless...you're actually one of those people that BELIEVE everything you read in history books...I'm sure you believe everything you see on tv as well....OUCH
ReplyDeleteMika,
ReplyDeleteDo you have a cat named Jeffrey by any chance?
So, how do you learn history, mica? Hearsay? I'm really not one to watch much television, but as a matter of fact, I do enjoy the History channel. Thanks for another good laugh. You are truly deluded.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Mica is an native american from way back when and can give us first hand information about how things really happened. That is why she doesn't need books and defends the original USA citizens...in fact, maybe Mica has a God complex...
ReplyDeleteHA you ladies are a piece of work.
ReplyDeleteIssue was not about race of nanny or her right to buy or eat lunch, just about leaving the child with a stranger when there are plenty of sandwich shops in NYC
ReplyDeleteSprak and Mika, you both need to get lives. How much time do you spend on the computer swapping insults with strangers per day? Your children are suffering from your lack of attention...
ReplyDeleteI'n baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
ReplyDeleteAllow me to say my two cents:
OP, you did the right thing! YOU GO GIRL!
*flying back to my little spot*
I missed you guys!
but WHO are you?
