Inattentive Crossing Guard in Bay Ridge, NY

Received Friday, May 25, 2007
Today I took a walk with my son in the stroller up third ave. We stopped at the corner of Bay Ridge Avenue and 3rd Ave for the light. There was a crossing guard yapping away on her cell phone. There were young children crossing the street against traffic and she was still talking. As she is talking she is also using her hands, a young child, at least of age 9 was crossing the street, behind the crossing guard. The child had just taken a step onto the street as a car came. the crossing guard (still with the phone TO HER EAR) yells at the child to pay attention. She must have heard me say 'excuse me" cause she turned to look at me. As the light turn she finally got of the phone. I am not sure how to report this to her supervisor but I figured to notify anyone that has a child that goes to school in that area, to please be aware of this woman. I'm sure she is very nice and had every reason to be on the phone, but she is getting paid to protect our children.

  1. Umm..."I'm sure she is very nice and had every reason to be on the phone"...would you still feel that way if your child had been hit by a car because of her inattentiveness? I think not! She did nothave any right to be yapping on her phone, she had a job to do.

You need to march your ass to the school principal and make him/her aware of it. The principal surely knows how to get in touch with this guard's supervisor.

  2. I can't believe you posted that OP.
What a great idea. I may have seen the same crossing guard on Tuesday. I was wondering if I were just being bitchy or if other people saw this behavior as a problem!

  3. I would love to but i don't even know the name or badge number. I just wanted to make everyone aware of what this guard is doing to keep their eyes open as well. I hate going to the school without having all her info.

  4. 8:27--

Crossing guards are an employee of the local police station...but I also think complaining to the school would get it taken care of.

  5. call the local precient. Had that problem about 2 yrs ago, called them up and about a week later she was gone. I heard they sent a patrol car to check on her and they saw the same thing. she would just stand on the corner and chat away w/ the moms...

  6. use the "email this" feature and email it to other parents and to teachers in the district. It will find it's way where it needs to go. Trust me.

  7. Wasn't it only two months ago where someone held hostages at the Space Center and killed the person who was going to terminate him? People need to be careful about how they intervene when it could be a person's job in jeopardy. I understand why OP was hesitant. No one wants to be the person some disgruntled traffic cop is gunning for.

  9. Whom ever is in charge will be able to check who was assigned that corner on that day. Call the school, this is serious!
Justine, crossing guards are not police, they are mostly older retired women who are supplementing their S.S. with the few dollers they are paid for a couple of hours a day, not likely to murder you.

  10. I think the 68th Precinct is in charge of that area/crossing guards.

  11. I saw a sleeping crossing guard once, several years ago and duly reported it. It's a very serious matter.

  14. Im writing this comment because i keep seeing this crossing guard in brooklyn standing against the gate on the corner as children are trying to cross. Now i go down this block everyday and im tired of seeing her stand up aginst the wall doin nothing. Nobody says anything to her, she talks to parents often and dont even move or cum out to the street. Yesterday i had enough of this. I was turning the corner and this little girl looks like she's about 6 or 7 standing at the corner waiting for the crossing guard to come over. The crossing guard did not move, and the little girl was scared and wouldnot move until the crossing guard come. I had to blow my horn to tell the guard come over here and direct the girl. That really pissed me off. She never do her job. I just hope nothing bad happens on that corner.
