Sunday

Peggy Notebart Nature Museum in Chicago, Ill

Received Sunday, April 15, 2007
This happened on Thursday, April 12 10:00-11:00. Two blonde Polish women were at this museum with 4 kids between them. Mia was the only girl in the bunch, blonde hair in pigtails and a pink shirt on. Conner and 2 blonde boys were the other children. None of them could have been older than 3. I witnessed these women sitting on the side of the museum while the kids ran around the water area of the museum. They were just chatting away and would yell if they needed to get a child’s attention. At one point one of the blonde boys and Mia came over and asked me for help because they weren't tall enough to play on their own. Anyway she grabs him back and begins to scream at him again. I was highly disturbed by the behavior of these women and their lack of respect for these little kids. Oh and while the one was shoving cheese in her kids mouth the other was on the phone while 2 of the boys were playing with the string for the blinds and wrapping it around their neck and pulling. I stepped in and told them it wasn't safe they should let it go and got the most horrific look from one of the women. They finally packed up in a hurry and ran out when a mom started to approach them about one of the kids who were screaming. One of the boys had a yellow and blue Columbia coat with a navy blue fleece hat. I'm sorry I can't describe the women better I was with my 3 kids and trying to keep an eye on them as well! I get the feeling these women are there all the time, they knew the ins and outs of the museum pretty well.
04/17/07 More info regarding the Peggy Noteabart museum incident: I'm the original poster here--I ran into 2 of the women yesterday at Briar and Broadway. They are not stylishly dressed and were not at the museum either. They both look to be around 5'7 with dirty blonde hair, one of the women has shoulder length blonde hair with very dark roots showing through while the other one has hair that reaches past her shoulder. At the museum it was in braids yesterday it was down. I have to believe that the families they watch are around Briar and Broadway because the little girl was walking yesterday while the little blonde boy with curly hair was being pushed by the nanny with the shorter hair in a black single mountain buggy jogger. hope this helps! I'm sure I'll encounter these women again as they are close to me so I'll keep my eyes out.

  1. Are you sure they were nannies? Maybe just bad moms who won't control their kids?

  2. I think I've seen these nannies with these children at the park on Nelson, in between Ravenswood and Paulina. These two blonde nannies appear to be in their twenties, slender build, and are typically dressed stylishly. They are usually on the phone, or talking to each other or other nannies while the children run around unsupervised. Similar to the original poster's description, the only time they interact with the children is when they scream at them from across the park because the children are doing something unsafe. I saw them at the park on Friday (4/13), once around 10am and then again at 4pm.

  5. You know what's funny? I haven't been on this blog in months but I do remember that when this blog started some of the posts were about Polish nannies and I was thinking, How the hell do people know who is Polish and who isn't?

Granted in Chicago, there are more Polish people.

  6. I knew they were polish because they were speaking the language and I'm familiar with it....

  8. I wonder how many nannies have tried for other jobs, been rejected, and then decided to become a nanny? Food for thought.

  9. I think the problem is that too many parents are fast and free with the title of nanny. A nanny is a professional. She is educated. She drives, swims, tutors, teaches, knows CPR and first aid. She doesn't have to be told when to take a child to the park because she is motivated and a self starter and WANTS to have the child in her care stimulated.
Too many EMPLOYERS are to blame for calling their piss poor examples of domestic bliss "nannies". These women are not nannies. In fact, some of these women move here from the Islands with zero experience with children. They have background that you cannot even search, they don't drive and they are not educated beyond the 8th grade. Of course they can tell you anything they want. There is no way to check it out!

The fault is not in the caliber of the nanny but in the parent who tolerates....

You are so right. Parents hire someone with no qualifications, and call her a nanny. Then people bash nannies as a group because of what they see of these faux nannies. How about directing some of the criticism at the parents who put a clean house and their own comfort ahead of their children's welfare.
    A nanny

  11. I am a nanny in the area around damen and belmont. and there is a large group 3-7 sometimes of polish nannys that all meet in the park there. they talk to each other, and on their phone and glare at all the other people in the prk. most of them hardly watch the children. most never even get up from the park bench. I agree with the post above. Most people are getting horriable care for their children simply beacuse they go with the cheapest. I am sorry but if you really want good child care for your child you are going to have to pay more than 10-12 an hour. professional nannys care for your child like their own. they take them for long walks and play in the park all day long. We dont talk on the phone, we dont meet up with other nannys in the park. We concentrate on your child. And you are not going to get that for 10 or 12 an hour. just keep that in mind next time you want to interview people who are willing to work for less.

  12. I am a nanny and this site blows my mind. I hate to say that i am nieve to the fact that children are treated like this, because sadly i am just in denial that anyone could be so lazy/irresponsible and down right rude! I am 24 years old, and have no children of my own, but adore the children i care for *and everyone else's children 99% of the time* I left a comment on another one of the postings, but i feel the need to post it here again ....

"I love children, and as a nanny they're my main focus *everything else comes second* i read these postings in disgust of what some families hire. Screen me, question me, drug test me, background check me. Please please please parents, choose wisely!"

It is due to people like these mentioned that cause "nannies" to be given bad reputations, and poor pay. Nannies are paid well not only because they nurture your children, but because they're educated, well mannered, and carry themselves professionally - nannies are not a convience they're a luxary to your family and it why they are costly. The next time you buy the least expensive item - remind yourself that you "get what you pay for"

  14. You people can't even tell the difference between Polish,Russian or French. It's amazing how all the sudden you are "familiar" with the language. And by the way:How come there is no posts about american nannies...? Because they are lazy and sit at home all day. European,African,Jamaican at least go to the park even twice a day and get some fresh air.Beside alert parents if something really wrong is going on instead of sitting and chatting on line. Go over and ask for the phone number or something. Be the grown up.
    Best luck
