  3. Re: Touch Deprivation
I cannot say how important it is to be physically touched every day, whether you are an infant or an elder. It is necessary for proper health. Preemies thrive better when touched, children learn better, adults trust more. There was even a candid camera-type study done showing that when a stranger asks a favor (for phone change) if the subject was touched on the arm they usually said yes. Another classic study showed that baby rhesus monkeys always chose warmth and softness over food. We are no different.
Not four hours ago, my bf and I were leaving his father's house and I asked if he had given his father a hug. He said "We aren't touchy people". I told him he'd better learn to clap someone on the shoulder then, because his dad needed it. He had just moved away from his family, his pet had just died and he's lonely. Jeez give the guy a hug! I made sure I did. I'm not a touchy person either, but I learned to be. And now I make sure I make contact with my nephew when I'm with him by rubbing his arm or his hair, giving him a big squeeze for no reason, rub his hand with my thumb when we hold hands... And you know what? It's very selfish because I need to get in daily touches too.
So PLEASE - put your hand on someone's shoulder, shake someone's hand, give your friends a hearty hug when you see them, play pattycake with a kid. Parents and nannies give loving contact to your kids. Just literally keep in touch with each other.
    Be well.
