Umbrella Eye Injury on 59th Street & 3rd. Ave in Manhattan, NY

Received Monday, January 15, 2007
I would like to thank the self centered idiot who stabbed the child I was holding under his eye with the tip of his umbrella, heard him cry out in pain, looked at us, made eye contact and walked on. You were walking ahead of me carrying a black umbrella with a sharp black tip and cane colored handle. You were about six feet tall, with a large bald circle on the crown of your hair, dark straight hair around that. You were wearing a 3/4 length navy rain jacket, navy pants, brown wing tip shoes. You were walking ahead of me as I carried the 3 1/2 year old West on 59th Street at about 12:35 pm today as the sidewalks were packed. Your cell phone rang and for whatever reason you decided to stop abruptly in the middle of the sidewalk. I didn't react in time. Nor did the people behind me who bumped into me and the tip of your umbrella gashed the child in the eye. I know you heard him cry. When you turned to look at him, the look on your face seemed to say "oh it's just a child". What is wrong with you?If it had been one inch up, you could have done some serious damage! As a precaution, we took him to the doctor to make sure he didn't need stitches. He seems to be fine, but no thanks to you and the regard you showed him and every other pedestrian today! If I wasn't busy comforting a child in pain on a busy street, I would have snapped your picture and plastered it on every website that would take it! PS This man carried a large, bulky silver phone that had a ringtone that sounded like an office phone. After he looked at us with disregard, he continued across 3rd. Avenue west on 59th Street.

  1. some people are so incosiderate! how could he look at the child, see that he hurt them, and then walk away?! how sad, but luckily enough the child was not seriously hurt!

  2. Not that I am excusing this douche bag's behavior, but why do umbrellas still have such dangerous points on them? That should be illegal!

  3. I think the caregiver might need to pay closer attention to what she is doing!

    ReplyDelete
  4. You above are an idiot! There is a certain code of conduct for walking in the rain on a busy sidewalk. You don't stop. Do you really think the caregiver would submit this if the error was hers???? You are obviously not in or from NY!
Someone carrying a 3 1/2 year old in the city gets my VOTE for ACES HIGH.

  5. What an evil thing to post! She didn't even neccesarily say she was the caregiver. Or she was a she. Why do you have to be so rude? Why? Why? Why do you make me want to cry. I am fragile.

  6. you are right..I am not from New York and from what I am hearing on these blogs..i would not admit to being a New Yorker If I were!!! You are kidding me right?" "certain code of conduct when walking in the rain..you don't stop"?????? What the hell? If I am driving and I ram into a car that for no reason slams on it's brakes...the cops, the courts and the insurance co will all tell you..it is MY fault!! Why is it his fault that she ran into him??

  7. Is it really so hard to grasp that in NYC on a jam packed sidewalk, there are certain things you shouldn't do? Ie NO side by side double strollers!!!!!!!!!!!1

  8. you are still trying to make a case here where there really is not one! I am sorry the little boy was hurt! The man shouild have offerred a hand when he realized the little boy was hurt but he was not at fault! The caregiver/nanny/mommy/auntie(to please 1200am) should have been more careful when walking on a busy, rainy sidewalk with a small child in her arms! She wants to blame the man(obviously a real jerk for not asking if the boy was okay) because she was not paying attention! For cying out loud she made a mistake..own up to it..it is no freakin big deal!

  9. If you slam on your breaks driving down a busy road, the car behind you will hit you. In fact I think several insurance scams are based on that principle!
Only an idiot needs to stop and answer his phone in two seperate movements. I hope he steps in gum with brown wingtips!

  10. I am having a hard time understanding this one? I live in Ca. If I ran into a man carrying an umbrella and my son was poked in the eye..I would feel like an idiot! No way would anyone beleive it was his fault. The only thing that would be questioned of him would be not asking if the child was okay!
now I do understand the the sidewalks in NYC are MUCH busier than any of ours here, however,If I run into someone..why is that person to blame? Shouldn't I be responsible for my own actions?

  11. j...only an idiot does not protect the child she is carrying on an obviously very busy, wet sidewalk! If the man was carrying an umbrella with a dangerously pointed tip why was she walking so close behind? What she was close enough to run into him but NOT close enough to see the point on the umbrella (before he stopped) and stay back a few feetkeeping the little one at a safe distance?

    ReplyDelete
  12. so this OP had enough time to size up this man, hair, height, colorof umbrella, breifcase style and all but never noticed the sharp point on the umbrella? Strange?
Or maybe she did but did not keep a safe distance as she should have after noticing it?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sounds like our caregiver noticed everything except the sharp protruding object aimed at her childs face?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. OP ..our roads here are always jam packed. When it is rainy I always stay atleast a cars lenght behind. People get pissed all the time some even beep as if to move me forward! I have children to take care of. It is my job to stay at a safe distance just in case I run into an ass like you did! It was your fault honey! You should have remained at a safe distance..no matter how crowded the sidewalk was! Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1134 you are right! I am not arguing that point. In your scenario you make it clear our caregiver is at fault!

    ReplyDelete
  16. the mayah..no one is arguing that your sudewalks are jammed! But if you live there and are uaed to you you should be more prepared!Especially when carrying a child!

  17. The nanny or whomever should've taken the time to beat the ever loving shit out of the bastard. Maybe you would have ended up in jail, or fired, but you would be teaching the child to stand up for him/herself and would have been doing the asshole and the world at large a favor.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ok-not that I am not sympathetic to what happened here. But, WTH does this have to do with a site called I Saw Your Nanny? Was the person who was carrying the umbrella and poked the child a nanny? It doesn't sound like it! Then, why is this post here? Why does the blog owner even put a post like this up? I don't understand.........

  19. distance in New York CIty? On a rainy day. Please don't comment on NYC posts if you cant grasp what NYC is like!

    ReplyDelete
  20. THERE ARE NO SAFE DISTANCES.
Thank you CORNFIELD, Idaho for posting your stypid comments three times!

    ReplyDelete
  21. really? I thought OP was saying it was an accident caused by a jerk who could care less. People who don't care about hurting children are people we should all beware of!

  22. anonymous at 1:23, do you have control issues much? Have you seen blogs where JD invited people to send in their sightings and stories? Or are you only satisfied if the only tales on here are about bad nannies! Are you the same one who makes mean comments whenever there is a good nanny sighting?

    ReplyDelete
  23. to brenda said: No, no control issues darling, just stating a fact. This board is about nanny sightings, so, that is what should be posted here, nanny sightings, good or bad. if this was a blog about cooking, I wouldn't come here and talk about plumbing-sheesh! And, no, I do not complain about good nanny sightings, just relax yourself.

  24. you must be new here. Did you not read the Nanny Bonus thing? Or do you not read any of the Perspective and Opinion blogs??? I've been here since September.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ^^^At least the nanny bonus thing had to do with nannies. What does this post about the umbrella have to do with annies? Was the woman posting a nanny? And, what are perspective and opinion blogs??????????????

    ReplyDelete

    PS Now you know

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am guessing it is a nanny. However I don't care. I aprreciate a post like this just as much as I appreciate the one where the person referenced the diamond ring found on the playground!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Brenda - what's the name of the Father/Nanny infamous article you referenced?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Brenda - how do we find the Perspective and Opinion section? I looked on this page and don't see any link. I got to it by copy/pasting the address you wrote, but it's like a secret room I can't usually find.
And try not to be so snotty. Thanks!

  31. If you click on the State By State Directory link in the right margin or in the entry post, you will go to the Blog Index.
    http://isawyournannyindex.blogspot.com/
The State By State Directory is located there, along with "Nannies in the News" and "Perspective and Opinion". And yes, we invite your opinions, stories and sightings! Perhaps I need to make it easier to find!
    Thanks, JD

  32. Quite possibly, "Brenda" was referring to:
    http://isawyournanny.blogspot.com/2006/09/fathers-experience-with-nanny-game.html
After appearing on the ISYN website, the above article was referenced on multiple websites and blogs.
(We'd love to hear more from him).

  33. Brenda-you have a major attitude problem. No need to get all snippy with me just because I didn't see that. Obviously I am not the only one.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i thought you had the attitide problem. demanding to know why this or that was here or there. kind of ridiculous. in the words of a famous wise man that left me at the alter for a transgendered lover, "it is what it is".

    ReplyDelete
  35. you people are so ridiculous..now I see why our youth are the way they are!

    ReplyDelete
  36. All you people need to get lives

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would have grabbed the umbrella (evidence) and made a citizen's arrest. Child endangerment.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1225 you are an idiot!! Somebody should shove that umbrella right up your bu!&.

  39. to the above poster...
Strange that you would have NO comment on the poster who suggested that the nanny beat the S**t out of the B*st**d. Yet, a peaceful solution would evidently be out of the question for you! You even go so far as to want to physically abuse a person suggesting a non-violent solution. That's the trouble with our world today. It's all about violence and it's exascerbated by people such as yourself. Peace.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 351..oh holier than thou..give me a break!! This posting is ridiculous and all of you pc yuppie wannabees who live in the city need to figure it out!! You all take things to the extreme!! The man may have been an idiot for not asking if the child was okay but the nanny/care provider should have been paying attention to what was going on in front of her.She is responsible for that child in her arms! Let's stop blaming every one else for our screw-ups and start owning up to them!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hey you above...
Have you ever had your foot stepped on in a busy airport or been pushed, jostled or bumped in a crowded place? Civility requires an acknowledgement or brief apology. It's what's called an accident. But when a child is injured, it's greater cause for concern and a definite attempt should be made to make sure the child is all right. You sould like one of those rude people who elbow their way through a crowd to get to the front of the line, without a thought to who got maimed as you rammed on through. You need to be more sensitive and caring of others, and that, my friend, is obvious. Peace

    ReplyDelete
  42. hey you above!! If you would hav etaken a moment to actually read my post as oppossed to rushing so fats to type a response you would see that I agree,as stated, the man was a jerk not to ask after the child!! However...When I am walking on the sidewalk,If I run into someone..it IS MY FAULT!!Not the person that I rammed into, weather they stopped short or not!! As for your nasty judmental remarks at the end of your post,I do not owe you an explanation but you obviously are an advocate for enablers!! She was not paying attention and had a child in her arms..it was her fault not his!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Uh, perhaps tis you who need read better?
The nanny did NOT bump into the man, but rather (as you would call it) the child's eye bumped into his umbrella, an instrument that when one is using, becomes the responsibility of it's user to take care to managne it so that it not become a danger to others. That would not include dead stopping on a sidewalk full of pedestrians, especially in order to ANSWER A CELL PHONE! He could have and should have removed himself from the sidewalk in order to take care of his seemingly "very important business". It was not the nanny's fault. She, in fact, was also run into due to his rudeness and his thinking that he was "cock of the walk". As for you, you seem to be misguided, to say the least and a tad too volatile for my liking. Not only do you sound very pushy and impatient, but I am fairly certain that you are a cell phone user/abuser as well. After all, you totally condoned the man's actions that caused the whole incident in the first place and then lightly dismissed his indifference and lack of apology, focusing your blame on the nanny who was caring for the actual innocent victim of it all.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To the person who posted the original comment: It's YOUR fault!
I have been down 59th/3rd many times and just because a person stops and you happen to bump into them doesn't make it "their" fault. Pay attention. Even if they stop where a lot of people might be walking, were you walking a little too closely? A little to fast?? Give me a break. His mistake was not saying sorry if he realized he "accidentally" poked someone. His back was facing you. YOU were facing his back. Be more alert.
