  1. Thank you for not displaying the text of disturbing news stories like that. I am sure there are other mothers out there who don't have the stomach to read them.

  2. I really have a problem with this kind of posting.

I am a nanny and yet, I don't think this site is a terrible thing. I think it does serve a purpose and I think that people who observe what they honestly feel is abuse feel good about having a place to report their sitings when otherwise they would have no where to go, as these moments are often so fleeting.

I truly don't understand, however, what posting a news story like this has to do with the purpose of your site. The child is dead. The parents know that the child is dead. There isn't a chance that they didn't know and that this website would be the way they were informed. I also don't see how the information provided in the headline or the news story will help parents who employ child care providers.

There are bad nannies, yes, and if this site helps weed some of them out, then it is 100% a good thing. But, in my opinion, there is no reason to cast a shadow across a profession because of the actions of one person. When it comes to causing the death of a child, sadly, it is considerably more frequently a parents doing, and the repurposing of articles like this seem to be harmful fear mongering, to me.

  3. If we never saw stories like this in the press, how would realize what a considerable risk this is? It is so underestimated, happens more than you would think it does and sadly, most of the times the parents are the ones who end up running over their own child.

It isn't a good article no. I have two children 2 & 3. This immediately made me think of MY driveway. Just in the way that the recent kidnapping of the boy in Montanna made me speak to my children about strangers. The world is not perfect. We must be constantly aware of the dangers around us.

    Sadly.

  4. I think that JD has been publishing "nanny in the news stories" since the beginning. remember the nanny who shot the bear to save the family?

This is a sad one and tough to stomache. I have mixed feelings.
But if I was in the process of hiring a new nanny or had a relatively new nanny and hadn't addressed this with her, it surely would bring it to the front burner.

I am fortunate. I have had the same nanny for 5 1/2 years. PS She has p'd off a lot of class mothers for refusing to take their S--T. Go Caroline!

  5. I love this:

"But if I was in the process of hiring a new nanny or had a relatively new nanny and hadn't addressed this with her, it surely would bring it to the front burner."

I would love to overhear that conversation:

"I just want to make sure that you aren't the type of nanny who runs kids over with their SUV's. If my daughter was standing behind your car as you backed up, would you press the gas or the brake?"

I know I'm being overly glib--but to me, this does seem like a no-brainer. Car safety is such a huge deal, I can't imagine you would have let a nanny drive your child around without discussing driving safety beforehand.

  6. I agree with the second comment.

I never realized the dangers of swimming pool drains until a child in our town was diving for "diving type toys" and got his hand stuck by the suction of the pool drain/filter. Even with an adult supervising, they were unable to free his hand in time to save him.

I pass that story on all the time. Not because I think the parents don't know their child is dead. Not to bash the parents. But because that is scary. I would have never thought that was such a danger!
I always make sure that everyone who swims at our house knows where the emergency shut off to the filter is.

As for the posting itself, Stephanie Grisham with AAA said, "It's a tragic story and unfortunately it happens a lot more often than we ever anticipate it to ever happen."

If you drive an suv or a bigger car, you should alread be aware of the many blind spots around your vehicle.

Aside from passing on the very real dangers of life, isn't there a section somewhere on this blog called Nannies in the News?

  7. yes you sound glib. like a glib bitch. do you think if the nanny had seen a recent program or warning about the subject this would have happened? There are many things in life that we know are dangerous. It is hard to keep them as OR said on the "front burner". In fact doesn't a good parent have to keep rotating things because there are so many dangers out there?
This was an accident. Accidents happen. People make mistakes. Sadly, we can learn from others mistakes. The babysitter is devestated and was in a mad panic to save the little girl.

    You are an awful person.

  8. Car safety is such a big deal that some parents may make false assumptions that their childcare provider knows the risks in the same way they might. The knowledge we bring to the table is based in part on common sense and in part on our personal experiences.

  9. I think that is why MADD goes to HS across America and shows footage and pics of horrible crashes. It is a mistake to think that it can't happen to you.

  10. so for people who are on top of safety all the time, it is probably repetitive. And fear mongering. Kind of maddening. But we must remember that there are dangers all around and it is our job not to protect just our child, but every child in the village.

  11. The one thing I hate is how people are like irresponsible nanny because this happened but it happens more with PARENTS!!
