I read that article. Shock and awe. Shock and awe. Why are we so fascinated with nannies? Nanny Diaries? That New York Times woman who found her nanny blog? Chore Whore? Marge Ingersol? What is it that drives our nanny fascination?
Too bad people are holding back so much. There are a lot of VERY VERY bad nanny stories out there. Parents if you use an agency, make them hand over to you the background check. Check the references yourself. There is a huge difference between a nanny agency and a good nanny agency.
fyi i am way overprotective, but not nearly in the way that my husband is. We utilized a surveillance of sort on our nanny-unbenknownst to her. We caught such personal and intimate moments on camera. And we learned so much about her. Mostly we learned how we could NEVER let this nanny go. She has been with us four years and next year when our youngest starts school full time, we are going to pay for our nanny to go to the state university.
I think you are wrong about the nanny camera situation. And while it doesn't have to be another nanny camera, some surveillance of the nanny should be done within her first week. How many job are there were someone is hired and immediately left alone and unsupervised with the "most precious cargo" in the world? Observe your nannies behind the wheel when they don't know you are watching. And watch how they treat your children when they don't think anyone is watching. And when you find that nanny who is good to your children, hold on to her with both hands and everything you have. Nanny envy is HUGE where I live. I lost a nanny that was really wonderful to our family because of an argument started by my insensitive husband. In the three years since she has been gone, even paying top dollar to professional nannies, we have not had a single person that could hold a candle to her. And the nanny we have is good but we were foolish to lose the best. (She works for a celebrity now).
I so definitely would employ all of these measures to keep on track of whoever was watching my children!

ReplyDeleteIf you feel the need to use a nanny cam, you shouldn't have that nanny in your employ...
