Offended by a Raise?

OPINION
Would you be offended if your employer gave you a raise, but didn't discuss it with you first. Just added it on to your pay check?

  1. A lady I used to nanny for (and now babysit for) did that to me. Twice. I was confused, and told her about the next day, and she explained it. It was a nice surprise.

I guess it could help the more shy nannies who are afraid to ask for a raise.

  2. I'd probably be confused ar first and assume a mistake had been made.

Offended? No way! I'd love a surprise raise anytime, so long as there were no surprise additiona duties to go along with it.

  4. I would wonder why they didn't talk to me. Normally a raise comes with an evauluation. I think its a sign of poor communication. What parent doesn't have ten min to talk to the nanny? That's just odd to me, IMO.

  9. I like money. I would probably be confused, and then point out the "error" to them. If told it was a raise, I would feel happy and appreciated.

I've had parents give me raises without discussing it, saying (while writing out a check) something along the lines of, "It's time for a raise for you, so your check will reflect your new rate of $x/hr. Thanks for all you do." Those raises have been at or above local going rates and usually related to length of time of service or a new baby.

I think the parents planned this to be a nice surprise for the OP.

I say take it and be happy! ☺

  11. Nooo way! an if you are offended then your weird! lol. But if you are a parent just wondering, then no and alot of people are shy when bringing up such things so this would definitly help out the shy-talkers and make them happy and it would make anyone feel appreciated.

  12. OP,
Please tell us why you'd ask this question? It certainly gets my vote for being the weirdest one ever asked on this blog! Who the eff wouldn't want a raise? And having it just show up in my check keeps me from stressing over finding a way to ask for one!

  13. I asked because we have a great girl taking care of our two kids and think she's great.

We agreed on one wage, but think she is deserving of a bit more.

We also know she is in school and looking for her first place so we figure she can use a bit more in her pocket.

As some have mentioned, she's not the type to ask for a raise , and would probably turned it down if asked flat out.

We thought the extra in her next pay check would be a nice surprise and she wouldn't need to worry about asking us.

My sister and friend thought she might be bothered by a sudden raise.
I wanted to see what her sister nannies thought. You all gave me great tips when we looking to hire someone.

  14. My MB did that to me after my 1st year. I told her she wrote my check for over my usual amount and she said, "Oh yeah. You got a raise." Very much appreciated, but a very weird way to do things. They are a bit strange though.
